Chapter 687 - Chapter 687

Iron Man shot into the air, every weapon system on his armor fully activated. Micro-missiles, palm repulsors, and laser cutters wove into a dense web of firepower, saturating the areas where the monsters were most concentrated. Explosions blossomed one after another in blazing bursts.

Captain America commanded the base security personnel and the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents rushing in as reinforcements. Using cover and hastily built fortifications, they formed a solid defensive line, firing energy weapons and live-round rifles in precise bursts to hold back the ground monsters surging in like a tide.

And Saitama was like a red whirlwind on the battlefield. He didn't even need complicated moves—just the simplest, most direct charges and punches. Wherever his figure passed, the air cracked with sonic booms. No matter what shape the dark monsters took, the moment his fist so much as grazed them, they burst like punctured balloons, scattering into black ash. One punch, one kill—his efficiency was terrifying. He practically held the most pressured sector all by himself, unstoppable.

Even as the monsters were continuously wiped out, Saitama keenly realized these attacks felt more like stalling and draining them. While casually smacking apart a hound-shaped creature lunging at him, he shouted to Doctor Strange nearby, "Doc, this'll never end! You can't kill these things fast enough—if we want it to stop, we have to find where they're coming from!"

Doctor Strange hovered in midair, the Eye Of Agamotto shining with green light as he focused all his power on sensing and tracking the dark energy currents filling the air. "You're right, Saitama," he said as he opened his eyes, voice grim. "These monsters are just cannon fodder—constructed out of nothing by some powerful energy source. The source… is underground! The signal is coming from some enormous space deep beneath the city—very deep!"

There was no time to waste. They had to strike the heart of it. Saitama and Doctor Strange immediately formed an elite team. Captain America and Spider-Man also joined, along with Hawkeye, who specialized in underground operations and reconnaissance. They quickly found an access point to a maintenance passage leading deep below, then dove straight down.

The underground tunnel was dark and damp, reeking of rust and decay. But before long, that stench was swallowed by an even heavier concentration of dark energy. They hadn't gone far before they ran into resistance far beyond the surface monsters—not only in numbers, but in quality. The dark creatures here were more grotesque, their bodies coated in hardened, shell-like armor, their claws and fangs sharper.

More frightening still, they seemed to possess a degree of low intelligence—using the complex terrain for ambushes, flanking maneuvers, and even crude coordination. Ancient traps, reawakened by dark energy, triggered one after another: falling rocks, ground spikes, poisonous fog—endless hazards that brought huge trouble and danger to the team's advance.

In a wider, open area ahead—an abandoned subway station concourse—the battle abruptly escalated. Countless dark creatures of all shapes poured in from tunnel mouths, ventilation shafts, and even by smashing through walls, rushing the team in a mad encirclement like a black flood.

"Hold the formation!" Captain America roared. His vibranium shield whipped out in a brutal throw, smashing a row of charging monsters to the ground, then ricocheted cleanly back into his hand.

Amid the swarm, one monster stood out—massive enough to nearly reach the station ceiling. It looked like a twisted giant, wielding a colossal battle axe condensed from pure dark energy. Every swing came with a shriek that tore the air and a corrosive wave of darkness—

This was clearly a commander-class Dark Lord!
