Why is it that Nina has to confess having a crush on someone in the damn school washroom every time? She did it this time as well. Just as she always does. Making it way more dramatic than it needs to be. All the other times, Maya couldn't wrap her head around what Nina was saying. But this time, she understood.
Maya, who has never had a crush on someone, has always thought she was attracted to girls. Watching all the other kids talk about crushes made her feel like an outcast. It wasn't all that serious, but that's all these kids around her ever talked about during lunchtime. She was so clueless about what crushes even meant. One time, she even lied about having a crush on a guy from her class just to feel included. Only for it to backfire, and then she had to explain how she didn't have a crush on that guy. "I don't have a crush on him! I can kick him
right now to prove that!" That's what she had said to prove she didn't have a crush on that guy.
Nina, on the other hand, was a stark contrast to her. She would have a crush on a different guy every single month. Even though Maya was as dumb as rocks when it came to having crushes, she was able to gather one thing for sure. Nina had NO TYPE….Leo, Alfi, Safwan, Dev, Blah blah blah, there are way too many. From nerds to "fuck boys," she loved them all.
Ah, yes, fuck boys in 4th grade. What are nine-year-olds doing to get that title? HOLDING HANDS?? Well, one might think they could be kissing different girls each day. However, that just can't be true since these kids thought kissing could get you pregnant..Sigh..can't blame them, can we?
Maya and Nina…How did these two become friends in the first place?
The first time these two met, Nina punched Maya in the gut for no damn reason. Or maybe she had a reason? To this day, neither of these two knows why she had punched Maya. Frankly, these two had no reason to be friends. That was in second grade. They'd talk to each other from time to time since they were in the same class. But if anyone asked them whether they were friends back then, they'd probably have shrugged.
Back then, in second grade, Maya had recently switched to this school and had no friends. She'd get into frequent fights. No one really talked to Maya except this one girl, Maria. Her parents were divorced. Other kids were advised by their parents not to be friends with her since she was "different". Divorce is a taboo in this country. Well, to Maya, they were both different from others and alike. At first, they got along quite well. Maya grew dependent on her and trusted her. Maya couldn't imagine she'd have to break off their friendship. After all, Maya thought of her as her best friend. Maria would ask for things, and if Maya refused, she'd threaten to break off their friendship. Eventually, Maya got out of this toxic friendship, but was left alone again. She'd decided never to be friends with anyone again.
Until-
4th grade. Maya doesn't really talk to anyone. The usual "hi, hello, how are you?" That's about it.
One morning, Maya found Nina in the washroom acting like a "drunkass," as she'd describe. She was blushing from ear to ear. Giggling to herself and making weird noises as if she was trying to hold back her screaming."What's up with this dumbass?" Maya said to herself. "Bro..sunny is soo cutee ahhh," Screamed Nina. "What the fuck is she talking about…Sunny? That guy is mad fugly," she thought. Of course, she can't say it out loud. "Aha? So?" Maya asked Nina. Nina said, "What do you mean sooo??". Then she blabbered some more, which Maya rolled her eyes at, and went off to their class to eat lunch. From then on, every single time Nina gets a crush on someone. She'd confess it in the washroom to Maya of all people. Maya was confused every single time, Uninterested nonetheless.
Maya's sitting on the last bench as per usual. For some reason, everyone was present that day. Pretty unusual for Green Light School. Nina's late again. And only one seat was left next to Maya. "Yo..Can I sit with you?" Nina asked Maya. "Where else would you sit, dumbass? This is the only seat left," replied Maya with a straight face. "Haha! Right", Nina sat next to her.
"Hey...why do you always sit alone?"-Nina
Maya doesn't answer her.
"Aight, don't reply to me then." Sighed Nina.
Well, that's how their "friendship" started.
