Chapter 8 - Night in the Forbidden Garden

The night spread a dense darkness over the palace gardens, illuminated only by the light of the full moon beginning to pierce through thin gaps in the clouds. The night breeze moved gently, rustling the leaves of olive trees and tall shrubs, casting shadows that danced across the stone floor. The salty scent of the Bosphorus seeped through every crevice, mingling with the fragrance of jasmine blooming in the courtyard, bringing a deceptive sense of calm.

Lara stepped slowly, each movement of her gown brushing against the dew-soaked floor. Her heart raced—torn between fear, curiosity, and burning determination. The scroll she had received remained clutched tightly in her left hand, and her gaze searched for the figure marked in the letter. The lion-shaped ring, the only clue she could hold onto, became both a symbol of hope and a threat.

Behind the shadow of an ancient olive tree, a man stood tall. His silhouette almost merged with the darkness, yet there was something different—his movements precise, each gesture controlled, and on his finger glinted the lion-shaped ring. Lara held her breath. This was him—the guard mentioned in the letter.

The man looked at Lara with sharp eyes, seeming to read every thought and fear within her. Yet, behind that gaze, there was something else: a calm that brought a sense of safety, a strength guiding Lara to remain focused.

"I am Iskandar," the man said, his voice low but clear, cutting through the silence. "Princess Lara… I am here to help. But you must be prepared, this will not be easy."

Lara nodded, trying to steady herself. "I… trust you. I have no other choice."

Iskandar stepped closer, observing every movement Lara made. "Trust is precious, Princess. But tonight… we must rely on each other."

Every word spoken felt both a warning and a promise. Lara felt the tension rise. She realized that tonight would mark the beginning of a conflict far greater than she had ever imagined.

---

They walked along the narrow path bordered by tall shrubs, the dry leaves rustling under their feet. Iskandar scanned the surroundings, his eyes catching every moving shadow. He urged Lara to stay behind him, maintain distance, and stay calm.

"Princess… you must understand," Iskandar said, glancing back. "Anyone moving in this garden could be a threat. Nafisa Hatun… she is cunning and dangerous. And Prince Kadir… his position is ambiguous. You must stay focused on our mission."

Lara swallowed. "I understand. But… how can I tell who is truly an enemy and who is not?"

Iskandar gave a faint smile. "You will learn that. Your eyes and instincts will be your most important weapons."

They reached a small pavilion, where Iskandar instructed Lara to wait. The shadows of the trees and tall shrubs provided natural cover, but the tension clung heavily to the air. Lara gazed at the scroll in her hands, trying to comprehend the hidden message.

Suddenly, the sound of light footsteps came from the other side of the pavilion. A shadow moved swiftly among the trees. Lara tensed, ready for whoever approached.

From the shadows emerged a familiar figure—Nafisa Hatun. Her gaze locked onto Lara, a thin smile on her lips hinting at hidden intentions.

"Princess Lara… such a beautiful night, isn't it?" her voice was soft, yet every word carried deceit.

Lara looked at her, her heart pounding. "Hatun Nafisa… what do you want?" she asked, striving to remain composed.

Nafisa stepped closer, her eyes sweeping Lara from head to toe. "I only want to make sure everything goes according to plan… and of course… that you remain safe. Or at least, I hope so."

Iskandar emerged from another shadow, his hand resting on a short sword. His eyes locked on Nafisa, reading every move and intention.

"Hatun… do not try to deceive us," Iskandar said firmly. "Our mission is clear, and we will not let you interfere."

Nafisa smiled, as if acknowledging the challenge. "I am not interfering… I only wish to make this game more interesting."

The atmosphere grew tense. The night wind blew through dry leaves, producing a whispering sound that heightened the drama. Lara stared at Nafisa, trying to read every intention hidden behind that sly smile.

Before the tension could ease, another set of footsteps echoed from the other side of the garden—Prince Kadir emerged from the shadow of a large tree, his gaze fixed on Lara.

"Lara… you are moving faster than I imagined," Kadir said, his tone serious, full of caution and slight anger.

Nafisa turned casually. "Prince… you are always too serious. Don't you want to enjoy this beautiful night?"

Kadir glared at her sharply. "I did not come for games… but to ensure Lara's safety. And you… do not toy with her."

Lara lowered her head, feeling immense tension. Two strong figures—two political and personal powers—stood before her, each with their own agenda. She knew she had to make a quick decision.

Iskandar looked at Lara, signaling her to remain calm and vigilant. "Princess… do not be provoked. Focus on our mission."

Lara took a deep breath, staring at both figures. "I… will take action myself," she said firmly. "I know who I can trust."

Nafisa smiled, as if understanding the challenge, while Kadir only nodded slowly, his expression unreadable.

That night, under the faint moonlight beginning to emerge behind the clouds, the three figures stood, each playing their part in a game far larger than Lara had previously perceived.

Every word, every glance, and every step in the garden would determine the course of their fate, as well as the future of the palace.

And that night, shadows and light converged, marking the beginning of a conflict that would test Lara's courage, loyalty, and cunning more than ever before.

---

After that night in the garden ended, Lara returned to her room with light steps, yet her mind was filled with strategies and plans. The scroll given by the lion-ringed guard—Iskandar—remained tightly clutched in her hand, as if forcing her not to stop pondering. Every word on that scroll now spun in her mind: "They will move at the full moon. Trust only the one who wears the lion-shaped ring."

Lara knew time was running short. In five days, the full moon would rise, and with it, the conspiracy lurking within the palace would begin to move. Nafisa Hatun clearly had her own plans, and her proximity to Prince Kadir made everything even more complicated. Lara realized she had to act quickly, yet her inner heart resisted rushing—one wrong step could be fatal.

Iskandar waited in Lara's private study, a room seldom used, far from the eyes of servants or palace advisors. The glow of an oil lamp illuminated the bookshelves and large wooden table, casting dancing shadows on the walls. Lara sat in a chair, watching her guard, trying to calm herself and formulate a strategy.

"Princess… we must begin planning our next moves," Iskandar said as he spread the palace map across the table. He pointed to several strategic points: the main gate, the forbidden garden, and rarely-used corridors. "Nafisa has access to many of these areas, and she will exploit any weakness we have."

Lara nodded, her eyes tracing the lines on the map seriously. "We must know when and where she moves. How can I follow without appearing suspicious?"

Iskandar drew a deep breath, then leaned over the map. "There are a few loyal guards we can use. They do not all know you personally, but some can be directed to provide information. Yet… we must be extremely careful. If Nafisa suspects, our plan will fail."

Lara felt adrenaline course through her. "I don't want anyone hurt. We must ensure everything is safe—the Sultan, the servants, even Prince Kadir…"

Iskandar stared at her sharply. "Prince Kadir… his position is ambiguous. We cannot rely on him completely. But don't forget, he is not a direct enemy. Our focus now is to secure the palace from Nafisa."

Lara took a deep breath, calming her mind. "Alright. What is our first move?"

Iskandar pointed to specific spots on the map. "We start by securing the route to the Forbidden Garden. I will arrange several guards at strategic points. You will move at night, disguised if necessary, to observe Nafisa's movements. This scroll… and the lion ring I gave you… will be your guide."

Lara held the ring in her hand, feeling the sharp cold of the metal. It felt more than mere jewelry—she sensed that the ring carried power, or at least, trust.

"And if I get caught?" she asked softly.

Iskandar leaned closer, looking deeply into Lara's eyes. "Do not be afraid. I will be by your side. But you must remain vigilant. Nafisa is cunning, and she will not hesitate to use deception. Remember… the full moon is when they will move. We have five days to prepare everything."

---

The following day, Lara seized the opportunity while the servants were busy cleaning the halls to inspect each corridor and garden carefully. She wore a loose evening gown, disguised with a dark shawl, and her steps were silent. Every moving shadow made her heart pound, but she restrained her fear, recalling Iskandar's words: "Your eyes and instincts are your weapons."

In the eastern corridor, she caught a glimpse of Nafisa's shadow, smiling slyly in the corner of the hall, as if already aware of Lara's plan. Her heart leapt. She quickly changed direction, observing the loyal guards' movements and ensuring her path remained safe.

Iskandar watched from a short distance. Whenever Nafisa tried to distract or cause chaos, Iskandar swiftly closed off escape routes, ensuring Lara's safety.

"Tonight, Princess… I want you to understand one thing," Iskandar said as they hid behind a large column. "Nafisa is not just a political enemy. She is clever and manipulative. She will try to exploit your fears, your curiosity, even your feelings toward Kadir."

Lara swallowed. "So I must remain focused… and not be carried away by emotion."

Iskandar nodded. "Exactly. Remember, the full moon is the signal that they will move. But we can use these nights to gather information. Every small step we record will give us an advantage when the climax of this conflict comes."

Lara felt the tension rise, yet at the same time, a sense of trust in Iskandar emerged. In silence, she realized that this guard was not just a protector—he was an ally capable of guiding her through the labyrinth of palace intrigue filled with traps.

They spent the following night moving through dark corridors, studying the movement patterns of Nafisa's guards, learning who was loyal to the Sultan and who could be easily influenced. Lara learned to read subtle signs—the way Nafisa looked, the direction of her steps, even whom she whispered to.

"Princess… look there," Iskandar pointed toward a dim corner of the garden. "Suspicious movement. Likely one of Nafisa's guards. Do not confront them directly. We are only observing."

Lara nodded, holding her breath, following the guard's every move from behind the shadows of tall shrubs. Every detail was noted in her mind—from step direction, hand movements, to brief interactions with unsuspecting palace servants.

After several hours, they returned to the study. Lara sat in her chair, exhausted yet satisfied. "I didn't expect… I could learn so much just by observing."

Iskandar gave a faint smile. "Observation is key, Princess. And you learn faster than I imagined. Yet… this is only the beginning. Nafisa will grow more cunning, and each night will bring new challenges. You must be ready to face deception, even from those you consider allies."

Lara looked at him, tense but determined. "I am ready. I will not let this palace fall into Nafisa's hands."

Iskandar placed his hand on the map. "Good. Tomorrow night, we begin step two: infiltrating the eastern corridors and the Forbidden Garden to gather direct information. We must know Nafisa's plans before the full moon."

Lara lowered her head, feeling the weight of responsibility but also a newfound sense of trust. She knew these nights would be decisive. Every step had to be precise, every decision wise, and every movement could make the difference between victory or ruin.

That night, under the increasingly bright moonlight, Lara realized one thing: she was no longer merely a princess trapped in palace intrigue. She was a key player in a game far larger than she had ever imagined, and her new ally—Iskandar—was the key to surviving the darkness that lurked.

---

The next day, the palace felt even more tense. Sunlight slipped through the stained-glass windows, forming mosaic patterns that danced across the marble floor. But for Lara, the light brought no calm; on the contrary, it seemed to highlight every threat lurking around her. Nafisa Hatun had already begun to move, though with her deceptively sweet smile.

Lara sat at her private study desk, staring at the scroll and lion ring given by Iskandar. Her hand gripped a pen, trying to write down all the steps she needed to take, yet her mind was in disarray. She felt as if pursued by an invisible shadow, a shadow that knew every move she made.

The door to her room opened slowly, and Elif entered carrying a stack of night clothes ready to be washed. "Princess, you should rest for a while," she said gently. "Today you are too tired."

Lara shook her head, resisting the fatigue gnawing at her body. "I cannot rest now. Every minute is precious. Nafisa is moving, and I must know her plans before she goes too far."

Elif looked at her with concern but said nothing. She knew Lara would not back down.

Elsewhere in the palace, Nafisa Hatun sat on the balcony of her private room, sipping tea while looking down at the distant garden. Her sly smile appeared sincere, but beneath it lay a complicated calculation. She knew Lara had now become a threat. Yet more than that, she wanted to leverage Prince Kadir's position for her own benefit.

"If I can make him trust me… at least half of Lara's secrets will be in my hands," Nafisa whispered to herself. She rotated the teacup in her hand, sunlight reflecting circular shadows on the wall. "And Kadir… ah, Kadir is always too easily tempted by curiosity. You will bring me closer to my goal without realizing it."

Nafisa summoned a loyal guard. "Aylin… I want you to ensure all routes to the Forbidden Garden are secure. Do not let anyone disturb our plan."

"Immediately, Hatun," Aylin replied, bowing deeply.

---

Meanwhile, Lara prepared a new plan. She sat over the large map spread on the table, marking every gate, corridor, and corner of the garden. Each point was examined, noting potential traps or spies. Iskandar entered, carrying several additional documents he had gathered the night before.

"Princess, I've been observing some of Nafisa's guards. They are moving more frequently toward the eastern side of the palace, especially toward dusk. I suspect they are preparing something," said Iskandar.

Lara studied the map carefully. "We need to block that route and divert their attention. If they believe all routes are open, we can use that to observe without being detected."

Iskandar nodded. "Exactly. And I also want to discuss Kadir. His ambiguous position makes everything more complicated. I know you have feelings for him, but you must separate emotion from strategy."

Lara swallowed. "I know… but it's sometimes difficult. He is not entirely an enemy, but he is not entirely an ally either. Every move he makes… makes everything more uncertain."

Iskandar looked at her seriously. "You must stay focused, Princess. Nafisa is clever. If she sees your hesitation, she will exploit it. Remember: information is power."

---

That night, Lara carefully infiltrated the Forbidden Garden, wearing a dark cloak to disguise herself. The night wind carried the scent of jasmine and the salty sea, caressing her skin gently but also bringing tension. Every shadow in the garden now seemed alive, as if following her every step.

Iskandar was at the agreed location, observing from a distance. He signaled with a small lamp whenever there was suspicious movement from Nafisa's guards.

Lara slipped behind the trees, observing from afar. She caught a glimpse of Nafisa discussing with several guards, her movements sly and calculated. Nafisa smiled charmingly, but Lara knew it was only a mask. She tried to remember every detail: body positions, tone of voice, even the direction of her gaze.

Suddenly, from the shadows, the sound of light footsteps reached her. Lara held her breath. The figure drew closer.

"Princess… are you alone?" a familiar voice called, making Lara's heart race faster.

She turned—Prince Kadir stood at the edge of the garden, moonlight reflecting off his hair. His eyes were sharp, staring as if trying to read Lara's mind.

"I… was just taking a walk," Lara replied, trying to keep her tone calm.

Kadir gave a faint smile, yet there was something unreadable in his eyes. "Alone in the Forbidden Garden… you are daring, Lara. Do you understand the risk you're taking?"

Lara straightened her posture. "I need to know what is happening in the palace. Nafisa… she is planning something."

Kadir stepped closer, his gaze never leaving Lara. "Nafisa is indeed dangerous. But you must be careful… and not trust anyone too easily. Even the guard you trust."

Lara swallowed. His words were true, yet she could not suppress her mixed emotions. "I must act. If I do not take risks, everything will fall apart."

Kadir studied her for a long moment, as if gauging Lara's determination. "Be careful. Ambition can sometimes be the worst trap."

They remained silent for a while, only hearing the wind and the rustling of leaves. Lara realized one thing: Kadir's position was indeed ambiguous, and one wrong step could destroy everything. Yet tonight, she had to remain brave.

In the distance, the glow from the palace corridors indicated that the guards were still patrolling. Nafisa was surely monitoring every movement, and every step Lara took in the garden was a high-stakes gamble. Yet her resolve grew stronger—the full moon was only a few days away, and she had to be ready to face every intrigue that Nafisa had carefully orchestrated.

---

That night in the palace felt different. The wind carried the scent of the sea and jasmine, yet it also held an unseen tension. Lara moved behind the trees in the garden, her eyes remaining alert. She knew Nafisa had already stationed several guards to watch every corner, every path she might take.

Iskandar, who had been waiting at the agreed location, signaled with a small lamp. Lara leaned forward, moving more slowly, each step calculated. The shadows of the trees formed a dark labyrinth, hiding more secrets than the moonlight piercing through the leaves.

Suddenly, a rustling sound came from the bushes. Lara held her breath, her hand instinctively touching the small dagger at her waist. From the shadows emerged a guard of Nafisa, his eyes sharp, seemingly ready to confront anyone sneaking through.

Lara stepped back a pace, holding her breath, waiting for the next move.

"Who's there?" the man's voice sounded firm, but not loud.

Lara looked at him, her eyes adjusting to the darkness. "I… am just passing by," she replied softly, trying to disguise her tension.

The man didn't move, his eyes continuing to observe. Lara could feel the tension between them like a thin thread ready to snap. One wrong step, and she could be discovered immediately.

Suddenly, Iskandar appeared from the other side, his shadow covering the Nafisa guard. The man startled, taking a step back. Lara seized the moment, stepping closer to the planned path.

Iskandar whispered, "Princess, we must hurry. Our time is limited."

Lara lowered her head, continuing to hold her breath. She knew every second was precious. With precise movements, they passed the guard, moving away from the patrol route that could trigger Nafisa's suspicion.

Yet another shadow moved from the eastern side of the garden. Another guard appeared, as if materializing from the air, blocking their path. Lara swallowed. Nafisa must be watching their movements.

"Princess, be ready," whispered Iskandar, his eyes fixed intently on the approaching shadow.

Lara nodded, gathering her courage. With swift movements, she pivoted, stepping into a darker side, using the tree shadows to her advantage. The guard froze for a moment, then quickly gave chase.

They moved like shadows, balancing between darkness and moonlight, between strategy and instinct. Lara felt adrenaline surge, her heartbeat echoing through her entire body.

Suddenly, the sound of more footsteps came from behind. Lara turned—Prince Kadir appeared, standing at the edge of the moonlight, his face half-hidden by shadows.

"You're becoming braver, Lara," his voice sounded calm, yet there was a note of warning that could not be ignored.

Lara looked at him, trying to steady herself. "I must make sure Nafisa doesn't go too far," she replied, her voice trembling slightly.

Kadir stepped closer, his eyes attentive. "I can help, but you must trust me. Don't do everything alone."

Lara exhaled. She knew Kadir could be an ally, yet his position remained ambiguous. "I cannot fully trust anyone right now. Including you."

Kadir gave a faint smile, yet there was a serious light in his eyes. "I understand… but tonight, we have a common enemy. Nafisa cannot be allowed to control everything."

They moved along a secret corridor by the side of the garden, avoiding the main paths. Iskandar marked every guard that appeared suspicious. Every movement was calculated; every shadow could be a threat.

At one point, Lara saw something that made her stop. A small lamp hung from a tree branch—a sign that a watcher was monitoring her movements. Nafisa already knew that she and Iskandar were in the garden.

"We must move faster," whispered Iskandar, his eyes on Lara. "They are already setting traps."

Lara nodded, her determination blazing. She had to find a way to face all of this before the full moon arrived.

Suddenly, from the dark, more footsteps sounded—faster, more numerous, and coordinated. Lara felt the tension rise. These were not ordinary guards but a group prepared in advance.

"Princess, get ready for battle," said Iskandar, eyes fixed on the approaching shadows.

Lara gripped her small dagger tightly. Tonight, every second was a gamble, every move could determine their fate. Nafisa had prepared something more dangerous than they had anticipated.

Prince Kadir stood nearby, his eyes still watching the opponents. "I'm by your side, Lara. But remember… strategy is more important than strength."

Lara swallowed. She knew tonight would be her greatest test—between courage, cunning, and instinct. Nafisa might anticipate every move they made, yet Lara had something Nafisa did not know: the determination to survive and protect the palace from the lurking shadows.

The night wind blew stronger, the leaves rustling as if whispering, and the moonlight highlighted their shadows. Tonight, the game of intrigue and strategy officially began.

---

The night shadows covered every corner of the Forbidden Garden. The cold wind from the Bosphorus rustled the leaves, creating a whispering sound like secret murmurs. Lara and Iskandar moved quickly, matching their steps with the moonlight filtering through the trees.

In the distance, small lamps were visible—a sign that Nafisa's guards had set traps. Lara swallowed. Every step had to be calculated. Every second could determine their fate.

"Are you ready, Princess?" whispered Iskandar.

Lara watched the moving shadows, the small dagger at her waist ready. "As always… careful, and don't let your guard down."

They approached one of the pathways, and immediately a guard of Nafisa was waiting in a dark corner. The man appeared calm, yet his eyes carefully tracked their movements.

Iskandar signaled Lara to stay still. With slow, silent steps, they passed the guard's shadow. But suddenly, a cracking twig was heard—the guard had noticed their presence.

"There!" shouted the guard, his voice echoing among the trees.

Lara and Iskandar immediately ran, but from another side, more shadows appeared—other Nafisa guards had blocked their path. This trap was wider than they had anticipated.

Suddenly, from the shadows, Prince Kadir appeared. He stood tall, his eyes scanning the guards. "Here… we must move quickly," he said.

Lara looked at him, still hesitant. But tonight, their choice was only one: move as a team or be trapped by Nafisa.

Kadir signaled Iskandar. "Open the path on the right. I'll cover."

Their movements were like a dark dance, between shadow and light, strategy and instinct. Lara felt adrenaline rushing through her. She had to stay focused.

Nafisa's guards pursued, their steps coordinated, but Lara and Kadir managed to lure some of them into a darker path, separating the opposing group.

Lara slipped to the side of the garden, finding a small door leading to a rarely used secret corridor. Iskandar looked at her, signaling to enter.

Once they passed through the corridor, they found a small open space—a hidden mini-garden behind the shadows of large trees. There, another guard waited, wearing a lion-shaped ring.

Lara held her breath. This was the person mentioned in the secret letter. The guard's eyes looked sharp, yet there was a signal of recognition when he saw Lara.

"You… Princess Lara?" his voice was low but firm.

Lara nodded. "Yes. I need your help. Nafisa has set traps for me… and someone wants to kill me before the full moon."

The guard studied her for a long moment, then nodded slowly. "I know. I've been waiting for this moment. Follow me, and don't look back."

With Iskandar and Kadir by her side, Lara followed the lion-ringed guard. They passed through secret corridors, avoiding Nafisa's patrols. Every step was carefully arranged, every shadow accounted for.

But suddenly, footsteps were heard behind them—more of Nafisa's guards appeared. Tonight, the trap was closing in. Lara glanced back, seeing Kadir watching the shadows with a serious gaze.

"Princess, don't let your guard down. They can come from anywhere," whispered Kadir.

Lara gripped her small dagger, her heart pounding. Nafisa was not playing around. This was more than political intrigue; this was a matter of life and death.

They reached an old small building on the side of the garden—the place the guard usually hid during the night. "Here is safe for now," said the lion-ringed guard. "But not for long. They will search for us."

Lara looked around. The building was simple, yet sufficient for temporary protection. From the window, the moonlight highlighted the garden outside—moving shadows continuing to haunt them.

"Princess," said the guard, bowing slightly. "You must know… Nafisa is more than just an enemy. She has information about your family, about who you love… and she will not hesitate to use it."

Lara exhaled. Every word from the guard seemed to add weight to her shoulders. Nafisa was not only a physical threat but a danger capable of destroying trust and heart.

Kadir stood beside her, his eyes fixed on Lara with seriousness. "We will get through this, Princess. But you must be ready to make decisions—there is no room for doubt tonight."

Lara looked at the shadows outside the window, her eyes fixed on the full moon growing clearer in the night sky. Five days until the moon would be full. And at that moment, all of Nafisa's plans would reach their peak.

"Alright," Lara said softly, her voice full of determination. "We must act now. Before they close our path."

Kadir gave a faint smile, yet his eyes remained serious. "Every step we take tonight will determine the fate of the palace… and perhaps your life, Princess."

The night wind blew stronger. The leaves rustled, shadows grew longer, and the enemy's footsteps drew closer.

The night in the Forbidden Garden had officially begun. Every decision, every strategy, and every move would determine who would survive until dawn.

And Lara… had to make sure she was not the next victim of Nafisa's intrigue.
