Chapter 45 - Chapter 44: Mad Scientist

Little Lily's dissatisfaction didn't last long. Leon was excellent at coaxing his sister. A sister could be a little "cotton jacket" one moment and a handful the next, but Lily was so easy to please that the difficulty was basically zero.

After taking her to the park and playground and buying her some delicious ice cream, Lily forgot all about the soccer game. She happily stayed in Leon's arms and refused to get down. When he brought up the family summer camp, her eyes lit up with interest and excitement. She loved spending time with her family, going on adventures, and having fun outside.

As for Dean, he was still the same. Give him a basketball, and he could play in the backyard for most of the day. Li Xiang was already considering expanding the backyard to build a small basketball court and install a hoop.

While Leon was enjoying this precious family time and signing up for the summer camp, Madripoor Port was once again mobilizing its resources. Secret field investigations were being conducted around the world to establish training bases in remote locations like Siberia, the Arctic, Antarctica, and Brazil.

The selected children had already been informed by their teachers that they would be undergoing five years of training and were warned of its brutal nature. All of them would be trained to become a corps of God's warriors.

These children, generally around ten years old, had quite mature minds. They did not back down when they learned of the cruel training. On the contrary, every child was filled with fanatical worship for the supreme god in their hearts. Children who grew up in the lower city of Madripoor had experienced suffering, despair, and confusion. They were deprived of hope, innocence, and happiness from a young age, which is why they were more mature than children with stable families of the same age.

It's often the case that those in the darkness yearn for the light the most. Leon was that beacon of light. They had witnessed the transformation and development of Madripoor's lower city firsthand and had their tragic fate of dying in a dark, muddy alley at any time changed forever. Perhaps they were the most fanatical group of believers.

Chosen by their God and tasked with becoming his warriors, they couldn't wait to start training immediately. The cruel and painful torture was just a part of the process of gaining strength. They would embrace the process and look forward to the day they would blossom into powerful warriors.

With the full support of Madripoor, construction on each base began in an orderly fashion. Over a hundred instructors also traveled to their assigned bases. The transportation of materials was simple. Before they could awaken their cosmos and use portals, the science department developed and built a highly advanced transport aircraft. It came equipped with advanced features like radar stealth and a massive payload, but none of these were necessary. After all, even if they transported the materials openly, no one would dare to challenge them. The destruction of the Strait of Malacca was still a recent memory.

But the science department needed to prove its value. A group of scientists who had been injected with the super gene serum, with unlimited funding and resources, were eager to demonstrate their worth. They planned one black-tech project after another, including creating another type of enhanced functional warrior based on serums and power armor, a space base, a sky city, a particle spark tower, micro-wormhole space technology, and so on.

The sheer ambition made Melina, who was in charge of the science department, feel a little overwhelmed. She knew all too well that scientists could often develop horrifying world-destroying black technology while also creating scientific miracles. As a result, a special monitoring department was established to maintain strict control.

Of course, these projects had little to do with Ophelia. She was currently in a state of both pain and enjoyment. She suffered from the constant torment of her body being torn apart, but she also enjoyed feeling her strength visibly grow day by day. If it weren't for the memories of subtle power control now in her mind, she might have accidentally caused a lot of trouble.

As the general person in charge, she was strictly overseeing the construction of the global training bases while also diligently absorbing the "legacy" left by Baron Strucker. Taking over his massive forces and assets required a lot of effort. Fortunately, she was now powerful, and with a group of super soldiers under her command, it was easy to eliminate Strucker's remaining loyal troops.

In the process, however, she discovered a very special base through Baron Strucker's memories: a human experimentation base. The base had a strong military presence and was run by another high-ranking HYDRA member, a Dr. List, who had complete autonomy. Even Strucker himself couldn't take control of the base.

Within the base were two experimental subjects whom Leon had specifically told her to keep an eye on: the Maximoff twins, Wanda and Pietro. Her dear master's personal interest in these two piqued Ophelia's curiosity, so she brought a team of super soldiers and, along with Kaecilius, headed to the base.

The base was located inside a mountain in a mountainous area about 100 kilometers southwest of Kosovia. The surrounding dense forest provided the perfect cover. Its security was at the highest level. Except for Baron Strucker, no one under his command knew the location of this base.

On a cliff far outside the mountain, Ophelia stood in a brown trench coat, her long green hair flowing in the wind. Kaecilius had changed out of his magician's robe into a sturdy shirt, T-shirt, and slacks. He now had a sense of freedom and ease, which reflected the change in his mindset and temperament.

"The defenses are quite strict," Ophelia said, looking down at the base hidden within the mountain.

"For humans," Kaecilius calmly replied.
