He was Red Skull's confidant, designing many advanced technologies.
After Hydra's defeat by Carter, Zola and other scientists were not executed or imprisoned—they were secretly recruited by SHIELD.
And so, Zola began a new life.
The Paperclip Project.
Exactly.
After being recruited, Zola remained in a high position and trusted by SHIELD.
He even secretly collaborated with Howard Stark on Tesseract research.
In Avengers 4, Tony returned to SHIELD to steal the Tesseract, only to be interrupted by his father Howard.
Howard mistook him for Zola and greeted him cordially—showing how convincing Zola's cover was.
Zola worked diligently for SHIELD until his death—long ago.
So, could the Zola who defeated Ultron be the same Arnim Zola?
After analyzing all clues, Fury thought it highly probable.
Firstly, Fury knew of no other Zola in Hydra besides Arnim.
Of course, there could be others unknown to him, but their chance of achieving such a feat was minimal.
Secondly, the diary explicitly stated Zola abandoned his body to become a super-program.
Fury judged that such an extreme act—even among Hydra lunatics—was extraordinary.
It was beyond human endurance. Truly inhuman.
And if facing an incurable disease, the probability only increased.
Hence, Fury concluded: the Zola in the diary was very likely Arnim Zola.
Basically, no doubt!
The truth emerged: Arnim Zola, recruited via the Paperclip Project, had been secretly working for Hydra all along!
This aligned with Hydra's secret growth over the next seventy years.
Moreover, the "dead" Arnim Zola had not died—he persisted in another form.
And he had become even stronger than J.A.R.V.I.S.!
Could Hydra's technology truly be this advanced—storing human consciousness on a hard drive?
This was pure sci-fi territory!
Even Stark couldn't accomplish it—nor would he, as it broke moral boundaries.
As the diary said, only Hydra would do something this crazy.
Yet, beyond shock and awe, Fury had to face another harsh fact:
Hydra still had a secret ultimate weapon!
One even stronger than J.A.R.V.I.S.!
Shua! Fury's already dark face turned even darker.
He knew exactly how dangerous such a weapon could be.
In the age of interconnected information, if Zola could go online and cheat like J.A.R.V.I.S., it would be extremely troublesome.
If Zola also built a physical body, that would essentially be another Ultron.
The thought of Zola's potential threat pressed on Fury heavily.
But Fury quickly calmed himself.
Zola must have limitations.
Otherwise, in all his time secretly opposing Hydra, Fury would have noticed AI cheats—he hadn't.
