"Hm, this really tastes good!"
"It's been so long, I almost forgot how to use a knife and fork."
"It does feel a bit awkward!"
In a modest Western-style restaurant by the street, by the window, Captain Marvel and the Skrull sat across from each other.
Carol was stuffing a piece of steak into her mouth with a fork, quietly marveling at the taste.
This familiar flavor stirred up a lot of memories for her.
To be honest, Captain Marvel had eaten a lot of exotic foods across the galaxy.
By taste alone, this small piece of beef would be considered ordinary.
But… well.
No matter what, Captain Marvel was born and raised on Earth. She had grown up on Earth's food.
Some things were etched into her very bones—unlike anything else, they could never truly be changed.
"I knew you'd like it."
The Skrull smiled—rarely, genuinely—something most people would never see.
"You probably don't remember. No, you definitely don't remember. Earth has changed drastically since then."
"When we were investigating the Pegasus Project, we passed through a small town… was it Prague or Brugra?—anyway, we came here."
"We're not particularly picky about food, so we ordered two classic meals."
As the Skrull reminisced, the two of them shared the meal casually, their conversation drawing them closer together.
"Really?"
Captain Marvel glanced around. "Could it be that this place…"
"No, no, no. This isn't the exact same town. But the restaurant chain is the same. Just… the décor has changed quite a bit over the past decade."
"Actually, apart from the sign, almost everything else is different," the Skrull explained.
"Is that so?"
Carol smiled.
And so it went.
The two enjoyed their meal, chatting about everything and nothing, reconnecting after more than a decade apart.
By the time they had finished, the awkwardness of those lost years had almost entirely disappeared.
They felt close again—reminiscent of the camaraderie they once shared while fighting the Kree together.
"All right, Fury."
After the meal, the Skrull personally led Captain Marvel around the nearby streets.
After all, in a decade, Earth had changed drastically.
After walking for most of a street, Carol finally spoke.
"Meal's done, mood's lightened… let's get to the prelude."
Nick Fury, standing nearby, straightened his expression, signaling that it was time to discuss serious matters.
"It's the Skrulls."
"They may now be a problem for Earth."
"At the very least… a huge ticking time bomb."
The Skrull got straight to the point, no beating around the bush.
"The Skrulls?"
Carol raised an eyebrow, her expression showing surprise and disbelief.
When she had left Earth, she had told the Skrull that she should only be contacted in emergencies.
Receiving the signal, she thought something massive had happened on Earth.
And yet… it was this?
And the Skrulls—what kind of problem could they really be?
Their home had been destroyed, and the Skrull she knew were the same ones she had helped escape from the Kree alongside the Skrull.
Strictly speaking, they were friends.
"I understand, Danvers. But the situation has changed."
Facing Carol's serious, questioning gaze, the Skrull began to explain.
He detailed the current situation of the Skrulls on Earth.
As Carol listened, her brow furrowed slightly, her disbelief growing.
Just this?
Sure, there's a bit of trouble—but emergency? Really?
Seriously! You can't just call me across the galaxy for a small problem! I'm busy!
In the galaxy, countless civilizations face extinction, countless homes face destruction.
So many places need her more!
"You should understand… our planet cannot even tolerate two skin colors, let alone two races."
"You may not realize it yet, but the Skrull problem is a major one."
"A problem large enough to threaten the survival of Earth itself."
Seeing Carol's expression, the Skrull knew exactly what she was thinking and explained with complete seriousness.
"Fury, that's alarmist."
"Even if a few hundred thousand Skrulls declared war on Earth, it's simply impossible."
Carol shook her head, utterly unconvinced.
Nick Fury was clearly exaggerating.
Even if the Skrulls were more advanced than humans, Earth has billions of people.
The numerical gap alone makes Fury's scenario impossible.
Moreover…
From Carol's knowledge of the Skrulls, they were not a race obsessed with colonization or violence.
They wouldn't do such a thing.
"In fact… they can do it."
"And they've already started preparing."
"Danvers, you know me. I wouldn't use this kind of trump card unless it was absolutely necessary—that would be a serious waste."
Seeing Fury's determined expression, Carol began to think seriously.
He wouldn't act recklessly.
This must be more complicated than it seems.
There must be key details she didn't yet understand.
So Carol stayed silent, focused on Fury, waiting for him to continue.
"I have reliable intelligence that the Skrulls are planning—or already executing—an operation called 'Secret Invasion.'"
"They are infiltrating some of our military and political leadership using their unique abilities."
"Attempting to launch nuclear strikes and trigger a nuclear war to eliminate humans and take over the planet."
Fury revealed the Secret Invasion intel and the fact that Skrulls are immune to nuclear radiation.
Carol's expression grew serious.
If Fury was telling the truth, this was indeed a critical situation.
At the same time, Carol had another question:
"If you have all this evidence, why not go to the government?"
"Even if the Skrulls can disguise perfectly, they can't outmatch a state apparatus."
Carol asked Fury directly, cutting to the point.
"For reasons I cannot reveal, I can't share my evidence with anyone—not even you," Fury said helplessly.
Even now, Carol still couldn't grasp why she had been summoned.
This meant she was not the diary-holder.
So Fury couldn't disclose the source of his intel to her.
"So… for such an important matter, you want me to rely only on your word and act?"
Carol was speechless. Their relationship was good—but not that good.
Even at their closest, such a critical matter couldn't rely on just one side's account.
"We're not children; we're adults."
"First, yes, this sounds extreme—but it's the truth."
"The only thing I can tell you is roughly how I obtained this information. But I doubt you'll believe me."
"Second, Danvers, the Skrulls aren't just my problem—they are a problem we created together."
"You cannot ignore it!"
"You also bear responsibility in this matter."
Fury's one-eyed glare delivered a long, impassioned speech.
And he was right.
The Skrull issue was partly Carol's responsibility too, even if Fury wasn't entirely fair.
"Fine. I may not like what you're saying—but I have no rebuttal."
Carol paused, helplessly shrugging.
Out of anger at being deceived by Yon-Rogg, or because of her own nature, or under Ma-Well's influence…
Helping the Skrulls had been Carol's decision.
And because of that operation, tens of thousands of Skrulls were now hidden on Earth.
Fury was right—it was Carol's responsibility.
"Still… I want to know how you got this intel."
"Trust me. My knowledge and experience far exceed what you imagine. What seems unbelievable to you may not be a big deal to me."
After a pause, she focused on Fury again.
Fury revealed his mysterious, unexplainable diary.
"So… that mysterious thing, which guards its secrets, allows no one else to see it, but predicts the future… that's how you knew the Skrull plan?"
But soon, Carol realized she still couldn't fully trust it.
Even for her, it sounded absurd.
"Danvers, since I got it, all its information has been verified. Never once wrong."
"I know it may sound incredible. You're free not to believe me."
"But I ask you—find the Skrulls a planet. Remove them from Earth as soon as possible."
"That was your promise too. You've always been a person who keeps promises, haven't you?"
Fury persuaded Carol from every angle.
Carol began to ponder seriously.
The request was one factor—but more importantly, Carol was not the type to shirk responsibility.
"I'll help you find them a home!"
She had said this to Talos herself, honoring Ma-Well's wish.
Yes, both Carol and Fury had promised the Skrulls a home.
But like Fury, she had long since forgotten that promise.
"Perhaps you can report this to the Sword Bureau… if it falls under their jurisdiction."
Fury's voice rang in her ears again, piquing her curiosity.
"Sword Bureau? Interesting. Did that come from that 'mysterious thing' too?"
Carol finally gave a bit more trust to the mysterious diary.
The Sword Bureau had contacted her before, trying to recruit her.
It was still being established, so she hadn't taken it seriously.
"Of course."
Fury smiled mysteriously.
"Really? What else did 'it' tell you?" Carol asked.
"I will lead the Sword Bureau in the future."
"Really?!"
Carol laughed out loud, thinking Fury was joking.
The two then continued chatting casually.
No one mentioned the Skrulls again.
But the Skrull knew—his goal had been achieved.
No matter Carol's reasons, she had decided to intervene and help the Skrulls find a home.
Whether it would succeed was uncertain—but it was a good thing nonetheless.
"By the way, Danvers…"
After more casual conversation, Fury began discussing serious interstellar matters.
About the purple sweet potato race, Titan, Sakaar, the Celestials, Vormir, the Pantheon…
These were key intel from the diary, leaving Carol stunned.
Some of it she had never heard before.
Seeing Fury's serious demeanor, she knew he wasn't joking.
He was serious.
Of course, some intel she did know—but that made her even more astonished.
It seemed that the diary that couldn't be revealed to anyone but predicted the future… might indeed be real.
Carol instinctively trusted the diary a little more.
