Chapter 38 - Chapter 38: Mary Jane's Fantasy

After finishing an intense battle, Maguire still felt no trace of fatigue.

Remembering that he had already contacted a moving company for today, he quickly dressed and headed out the door.

The hotel bill had long since been settled by Natasha.

At that moment, in the 13th Street district, Mary Jane was standing at the doorway of her home.

Ever since Maguire had taught her father a lesson, he hadn't raised his voice at her once.

With the school shut down for a month due to the Lizard's rampage, Mary Jane had nothing to do at home.

She had originally thought about getting a part-time job, but she changed her mind.

After all, her relationship with Harry had been going well recently. If she could secure that pillar of support, then what was a part-time paycheck compared to one meal's worth of money?

Just then, a black Bentley approached from a distance.

Mary Jane frowned.

*"What's a car like that doing here? Could it be Harry, coming to see Peter?"*

After all, she knew Harry and Maguire were close friends.

The Bentley stopped right in front of Maguire's house.

Now she was certain—Harry must have come to pick up Peter.

Smiling, she walked over.

But as she reached the car, a figure stepped out—

It was Maguire himself, dressed in a black suit.

Mary Jane froze in disbelief.

A second later, she forced a look of realization.

*"So Peter borrowed Harry's car. What a hypocrite. Doesn't own one, so he borrows from a friend."*

In her mind, there was no way this Bentley belonged to Maguire.

Maguire glanced at her briefly, then ignored her completely and walked into his house.

Watching his back, Mary Jane seethed.

*"Doesn't even acknowledge me. Driving someone else's car and thinking he's rich. Pathetic."*

Inside, Aunt May was cooking in the kitchen while Uncle Ben sat at the table reading the paper.

When Maguire entered, Ben gave him a knowing smile.

After all, he was a man too, and he'd once been young. If Maguire stayed out all night, there was only one reason.

And since Maguire had told him the night before not to worry, Ben wasn't concerned about his safety.

Ben chuckled.

"Peter, you look well-rested."

Maguire grinned and nodded, then sat down.

Ten minutes later, the moving truck arrived at their door.

Mary Jane stared in confusion.

*"What's going on? Are they moving? But with their finances, how could they afford a new place?"*

Ben came outside and spotted her. Smiling, he greeted her.

She stepped closer, asking politely,

"Uncle Ben, are you moving?"

"Yes," Ben replied warmly. "We just bought a new house. We'll be leaving soon. It's not far though—you can come visit. You and Peter are classmates, after all."

Mary Jane nodded blankly.

*"They really bought a house? Where would they get the money?"*

Then Ben opened the garage.

Inside sat a BMW.

Her eyes widened.

*"A BMW? Sure, it's no Bentley, but still—it costs at least eighty grand. Since when could Peter's family afford this?"*

*"Could Harry have bought it for them?"*

She asked cautiously,

"Uncle Ben, is this your new car?"

Ben smiled proudly.

"Peter bought it for me. I refused many times, but he insisted. He's a good, filial boy."

He even glanced at her meaningfully, the perfect uncle worried his nephew might stay single.

Mary Jane stood frozen.

*"Peter bought it? Impossible—he's just a broke student. No… it must be money from Harry. Has to be. Having a rich friend really is everything—houses, cars, given just like that. If only I could be Harry's girlfriend, or even his wife… My God, the life I'd have…"*

While she spiraled into fantasy, Maguire was upstairs helping Aunt May pack.

With his strength, the boxes were weightless—but he deliberately held back, not wanting them to worry.

Soon, the movers had loaded everything, and the family departed.

Only Mary Jane remained behind, lost in her daydreams of a luxurious future.
