Seeing that scene, Garfield and Holland both looked shocked.
"Does that guy have superpowers too? Even the flames can't hurt him."
"And it looks like he can absorb the fire."
Just then, a man and a woman ran up to Maguire. The man wore a gray suit, slim and long-limbed.
Maguire thought to himself, "Don't tell me these two are Mr. Fantastic and the Invisible Woman. Gotta say, the Invisible Woman really is stunning."
The flames were about to ignite a nearby tanker truck. Garfield and Holland glanced at Maguire, meaning for him to do something. Maguire didn't move—he knew exactly what the Invisible Woman could do.
Searing flames surged toward the crowd. At that moment, the Invisible Woman thrust out her hands. An unseen wall snapped into place before everyone, sealing the fire out.
Garfield and Holland were dumbfounded.
"What kind of power is that?"
"Who are these people, really?"
A massive blast hurled a car through the air, tumbling straight toward Maguire and the others. At the last second, the Invisible Woman projected her force field and arrested the car mid-flight over their heads.
Garfield and Holland had already poised themselves to make a move, hands outstretched to catch it—only for the car to stop, hovering right in front of them. The two traded a look.
"Didn't expect we'd be the ones getting protected for once."
The Invisible Woman's face tightened with strain. She shouted down at Maguire and the others beneath the car, "Get clear, now!"
Garfield and Holland hurriedly pulled Maguire out from under it. A moment later, they shot him a mischievous look.
"So, Maguire, how does it feel to be rescued—by a gorgeous woman, no less?"
"In that case," Maguire said, "why don't you two go ask this gorgeous woman for her number?"
"You go ask," Garfield and Holland said, deadpan. "We're not that kind of guys."
Maguire snorted. "You two really have no game. Watch and learn."
He walked straight over to the Invisible Woman. She eyed him curiously. Maguire smiled.
"Could I get your contact? I'd like to buy you dinner to say thanks. Also, with someone as beautiful as you, I'd really like to be friends."
Before she could answer, Mr. Fantastic's face darkened. He shot Maguire a glare. "This is dangerous, kid. Not the place to flirt."
Garfield and Holland froze. "Dude, do you even know who you're talking to?"
Turns out Mr. Fantastic was also pursuing the Invisible Woman—unsuccessfully so far. Seeing Maguire chat her up put him in a foul mood.
But the Invisible Woman's lips curled in amusement. She looked at Maguire. "Nice to meet you. I'm Susan. Here's my number." She rattled it off, and Maguire saved it on the spot.
Mr. Fantastic shot Maguire a cold look but held his tongue.
Just then, a car pitched off the bridge toward the river below. Mr. Fantastic sprinted to the railing; his whole body stretched like rubber. His arms elongated to snare the falling car while his legs coiled around the railing, suspending the vehicle in midair. He even cut a glance at Maguire as if to say, "See? I've got powers."
Maguire watched him and thought, "That car just saved you."
By now, the Thing had lumbered over as well. Order gradually returned to the bridge. Onlookers burst into cheers at the sight of the superheroes.
Maguire glanced at Garfield and Holland. "Alright, we're out. Looks like they've got plenty of capes on scene."
Garfield and Holland followed Maguire back to the car. Soon the three arrived at the former Oscorp site—only Oscorp was long gone. In its place rose a colossal complex that, from above, formed the shape of a spider. Parks and a swimming pool ringed the grounds.
Staring at the brand-new Spider HQ, Garfield and Holland whooped.
"This is insane!"
"Harry is unbelievable!"
Harry was already waiting outside the perimeter. Spotting the trio, he rushed over, excited.
