Chapter 5 - The Silent Gateway

Kael came down to the basement. The air grew colder, carrying a faint hum of electricity and machinery. His eyes went to the portal of the Veyne family. Once a pristine frame, it now looked scarred with dents and singed wiring from the accidents that took place when he crossed into this world. Some panels hung loose, and occasional sparks flickered even now. This reminded him of the raw energy that had surged through the portal that day.

Even in its damaged state, Kael could feel the portal vibrating subtly with ectoplasmic energy. His ghost senses tingled as the pull of the Ghost Zone brushed the edges of his perception. He deduced that the ghosts from the Ghost Zone could also feel the portal. But since it was broken and required access to open, they could not enter the human world—remaining trapped on the other side.

Kael's eyes went to the activation panel. Only three people could open the portal: his parents, and at Kael's request, himself. But now, even with his access, the portal wouldn't open in its damaged state. He pressed his hand to it, feeling the familiar tingling sensation of ectoplasmic energy as it barely interfaced with his skin. The portal seemed to shiver faintly at his touch but stayed closed—a dormant gateway waiting for repair.

Around the room, gadgets were scattered. Without his permission, even the housekeeper could not come here to clean or organize. That's why they remained untouched. His parents had purchased ghost gadgets from the Fentons: handheld ecto-scanners, containment thermoses, ghost nets, and a few small traps. "They were prepared, huh," Kael thought to himself. Though not as impressive as the full Fenton arsenal, these tools were still of great value—something he could experiment with.

Kael took a deep breath and steadied himself. The broken portal, the lurking Ghost Zone, and these gadgets were his first step toward mastering his power. Repairing the portal required experts—the very ones who had originally built it. Fenton familys help is needed. But before that, he had an interesting thought. He wanted to experiment with the gadgets.

Kael crouched in front of the devices and reached for the ecto-scanner first. He turned it on, and it beeped softly as it emitted a green pulse. He activated the device cautiously and watched as it scanned the basement in silent arcs.

"Let's see if this works…" he murmured. Kael focused his ghost energy, feeling the familiar tingling sensation. He allowed himself to transform. An electric blue aura flared around him, silver ripples spiraling outward, and his eyes glowing bright blue.

The scanner immediately reacted to his ectoplasmic bio-signature, beeping rapidly. A small ghost net triggered automatically, trying to capture him. Kael's eyes widened in surprise—the sensors were fully functional. He tested a few more by floating near them. A basic ecto-beam emitter pulsed in response to his aura, and canisters attempted to contain him. Each device responded precisely to his ghost form.

Exhausted from the tests, Kael couldn't continue with the rest. He shifted back to his human form and turned the deviced off . Standing amidst the gadgets and the faint hum of the broken portal, Kael smiled with joy and excitement. The experiment had been a success. He could safely test the devices on and learn their mechanics. The basement had limitations, but it could become his personal training ground.

For now, Kael called it a day. He freshened up and went to have dinner. The mansion staff included one housekeeper, one chef, and one cleaning person to maintain it. After a hearty meal, he spoke with them, thanked the housekeeper for taking care of the mansion during hard times, and reassured them that payments would continue on time. By then, he was exhausted. He needed a proper plan to take care of the situation.

The next morning, Kael woke to the housekeeper calling him for breakfast. Sitting in the dining room, he considered his next steps. Danny was currently eleven—two years younger than him. That meant canon events would begin in three years. He had time to prepare, but not much.

Kael didn't want to live like Danny—always struggling and barely keeping Amity Park safe. He remembered how Danny's personal life was chaotic, unable to balance both identities. Kael knew the dangers well: ghosts like Skulker, Ember, Johnny 13, Walker, and Youngblood were all elite predators capable of causing havoc. Even greater threats loomed—Vlad, Undergrowth, Nocturn—Domain Masters commanding entire factions of ghosts.

Power was his primary concern, but Kael didn't just want strength. He wanted balance. Protection. Order. For that, he needed not only power but also knowledge, allies, tactics, and technology. He recalled how Vlad often negotiated and schemed rather than simply fought. That was a path Kael could also use to his advantage.

Currently, Kael was barely in the E or D-tier. But he could grow as fast as Danny had in three years. Still, Kael wanted more. He wanted to live his second life at its fullest. He wanted to become powerful like Vlad Plasmius, an A-tier Domain Master, before canon even began. That would make him a chess player in the game ahead—not just another pawn.

All of this could come gradually. But first—

"It's time to call the Fentons to the ghost job," Kael chuckled.
