Chapter 22 - CHAPTER TWENTY TWO:TRY HIM OUT AND SEE WHERE IT LEADS

(Longest chapter title) (^_^)

"You can come in now." I ordered, making sure there weren't any sign he would notice and conclude that I had cried again. The door opened and he finally entered. He looked at me then his eyes swept to Cas. I noticed a hint of surprise that swiftly disappeared as soon as it appeared on his face when he saw her. Wasn't he here for her?

"Is there anything I can help you with?"I asked making sure he would notice the impatience in my tone.

"Uhm,I wanted to see Dr.Conner." He said turning to Cas who was sitting on the couch comfortably, exuding the aura of an unrestrained princess. Yeah,Cas was this free woman who could do anything without any restraints. Her dad,Mr. Dexter Stones was one of the major shareholders of this hospital. He was very influential in the city. Feared and respected by all. Rumors had it that, he used to be a very kind and carefree person untill his wife,the light of his world passed on. Cas,his only daughter suffered more as she had lost her everything at a very young age. Hiding the pain and sadness,she put on a deceptive outward appearance to prevent others from seeing her vulnerability.She had to look strong for her father and her family.All the hopes and future of her family were pinned on her.But even though she was under pressure,she always made sure she enjoyed herself to the max and did whatever she wanted to do. Even though she sometimes did the extreme and I cautioned her,she would retort by saying;

"Life is short. Allow me to live my fullest."

People at a distance never understood her, therefore judging and badmouthing her behind her back. And even though she knew that, she didn't give a damn as those weren't the ones she was living for. Those people couldn't do anything for her.Her father's wealth alone could allow her live a luxurious life. Almost everyone thought she was just a normal surgeon with no interesting background. Only the President,Leonard and I knew her true status. Cas loved to live a carefree life and for someone who is to soon inherit hundreds of millions, that was quite challenging. She therefore decided to live a subtle life to prevent the media and other stalkers from defaming her and her family name.

"Did you get the test results from Freya?"she asked, still sitting down like the queen that she was.

"Yes I did. It turns out he has a tumor on his brain that is causing the abnormal amnesia."He said, walking towards her and giving the papers to her to confirm.

"Have you spoken to the parents about this."Cas asked after reading through the papers.

"I have but they are requesting for you."

"Me? Is something wrong that you are not telling me?" Cas asked looking at Dr.Conner intently. Jeez, cut the man some slack.

"They just want to get assurance from you that the surgery would be a success and that the rate at which something bad was going to happen was only a one percent. "He explained.

"Hmm,it seems someone is only good at criticizing others. Can't even give assurance to worried parents." She scoffed which made him feel embarrassed.

If it wasn't for my encounter with him last night,I would have been happy and satisfied with what Cas had done but now,I sympathized with him.

"Cut him some slack Cas,you can't blame him. People these days don't respect and fully trust surgical residents. They think residents are not fully ready or knowledgeable enough to give medications to patients. Therefore needing confirmation from the ones they think are 'experienced' and 'capable' enough before they make a decision." Finally coming into the equation, I explained. I notice Dr. Conner raise up his head looking at me with a 'thank you'expression .Was he smiling at me. No I might be seeing things because of these dark shades. I turned towards Cas and invisibly flinched. If stares could kill,I would have been dead by now. She was literally staring daggers at me. I subconsciously swallowed the invisible lump that was in my throat. I knew what she was thinking. I had abandoned her and sided with Dr.Conner this time .

"Dr.Conner, if there is nothing else, please go wait for me outside and keep the parents occupied. This time, explain everything to them and make sure they understand. "Cas ordered.

He nodded then looked at me.

"It seems you like these glasses."he observed.

"What can I say, I've grown fond of it. It's a Chanel product right?"I asked.

"Yeah,my sister had it for me as a birthday gift."I replied.

"Then she really has great taste. I usually use Louis Vuitton products but I own some Chanel accessories. And when was your birthday?"

"It was the ninth of last month."

"Oh and no one knew. Did you know about it Cas?"I asked, turning to face her again. Her face was still red with anger but I pretended not to notice.

"I didn't know."she answered flatly.

"I didn't want anyone to know about it. I like to celebrate my birthday subtly."

"That's understandable. Not everyone fancies celebrating their birthday extravagantly. I for one am a good example." Cas rolling her eyes didn't escape me.

"Well then happy belated birthday."I wished and he smiled. This time brighter and indicative.

"Thank you. I really appreciate it.I will remind you of my birthday next year and be expecting something from you." He said jokingly. I giggled then nodded, ignoring the lost and perplexed statue sitting on the couch near me.

"Yeah I'm looking forward to that. " I said with a smile I didn't know had already formed on my face.

"I will take my leave then. Don't want to keep those worried parents waiting any longer. "He said giving a side eye to Cas who looked else where. Nodding his head, he turned around and exited my office.

After the door finally closed,Cas turned her head and stared at me keenly.

"Why are you looking at me like that?" I asked even though I knew the reason.

"What was that just now?" She asked still looking confused and surprised.

"You have to quit with the bullying. The man is actually kind and not want we viewed him to be." I said.

"What? What are you talking about. Right, taking his side now.I will come for you in regards to that later.I mean what's with the flirting I just witnessed?"

Flirting. When was that?

"What do you mean by that. We were just having a chat about these glasses which led to his birthday." I corrected.

"Well that wasn't what happened. You guys weren't 'just' chatting,he was clearly flirting with you. And the fact that you of all people didn't notice is amazing. You've lost your romance psyche."

"I kinda felt he was but thought it was me just jumping into conclusions as usual." I explained.

"Since when did you guys become this close?"

"Yeah that's what I'm about to spill to you."

I narrated everything to her. From Dr.Conner bumping into me at the opening party to what happened this morning. Him holding my arm in a weird way.

"Jeez I never thought the ever self absorbed and arrogant Dr.Conner was actually like this. No wonder you stood up for him then."

"I had to because you were over doing it with the bullying. "

"Says the one who used to give him dirty clothes and refuse to dump on his first week here."she retorted which made me feel guilty remembering how I had tortured him back then. "That was in the past. I regret it now."I said truthfully.

"Hmm,you don't say. So, what do you think of him?" she asked, waiting intently for my reply.

"No way, he's my junior. And who said he's into men. Letting you get inside my head is okay for oneday."

"Come on. With what you said and the way he was looking at you? Girl, he's so into you. You should give him a chance. " She advised.

I wanted to retort but kept quiet as I processed all that she said. The way he spoke and looked at me was obvious that he liked me.

"I just got my heart broken. What if we're just assuming this, I can't bear another heartbreak now."I muttered to her.

"And that's where optimism comes in. You can't always depend on how situations look and jump into conclusions. "Cas replied.

"I'm a surgeon. I rely on probability and numbers to save lives. I can't be making decisions whimsically."

"You might always have everything under control when it comes to work but for love,it has its own course and there is nothing you can do about the."

"Who just became the expert in love. Exuding the air of a wise old lady who has experienced love in many ways." I praised and she shrugged innocently.

"Wise, yes but old,no thank you. Don't you dare jinx my age. I will be forever young. And as for experiencing love in different ways, what can I say,I have dated two men so far and I'm now on my third." She stated.

Cas was a very exceptional woman. She was the prettiest female surgeon in the hospital. She exuded charisma and demurity, of course when we were in public. Most male surgeons crushed on her but she always played hard to get. The only men that were lucky to have her as their girlfriend had to transfer to different hospitals so the relationship ended. She was now dating Branson and I could see she was very happier in this relationship.

"So you are going to make a move right?"she asked eagerness in written in her expression and tone.

"You are quiet. That only means you are considering it right? Yee"She squeaked in excitement.

Knowing that a man liked me in that way made me feel joyous and full of myself for once. It seems that the saying that good things only happen when bad things come before was true.

Writer's remark: Chris deserves this for loving Leonard for years without him loving him back. So happy for him guys
