"...then let's please proceed with the surgery." The now enlightened worried mother requested once she was satisfied with the information she had absorbed. Cas had spent almost an hour explaining everything to the parents of the patient she was to operate on.I mean their child wasn't in a dire situation. There were surgeries scarier and riskier than this and even with that, parents didn't complain and ask too much questions.
"Dr.Stones, when would the surgery be done?"The man next to the woman,I assumed to be her husband asked.
Sighing in tiredness,Cas reluctantly answered. "Since the rate at which casualties occuring is very low,the surgery will be done approximately five a.m in the morning."
"You mean tomorrow? Can't you surgeons speed it up? I have a business meeting to attend to exactly five a.m tomorrow."The man said with an offended expression on his face. Cas finally lost it. This I saw coming.
"Mister, you and your wife have been bombarding me with unnecessary questions from the start which I get, because you care for your daughter . But you asking me to speed up your daughter's surgery is something far beyond my ability. I'm not godlike to do so. Your daughter isn't the first patient I am about to operate on so please quit the annoying chattering and let we the professionals do our work. Or if you still insist, we can get your daughter prepped and let you operate on her. Atleast with that, you would know it's your fault if she dies."Cas blurted out and the couple's face distorted in anger.
"How dare you talk to my husband in such a disrespectful manner? Do you who he is?"
"I do not know and I don't care either. Madam, please I didn't in any way disrespect your husband. I said what I had to say. " Cas replied boldly.
"You surgeons these days are arrogant and disrespectful. Lillian, pack your things,we are leaving this place. Debbie would be transferred to a different hospital." The man finally opened his mouth after receiving a session of criticism from his daughter's surgeon.
"We shall report this to the president,Dr.Hills." The woman referred to as Lillian,said disdainfully, thinking we would get scared of being fired therefore kowtow to her and her husband.
Well, she was totally mistaken. Cas didn't flinch one bit. She knew she had done nothing wrong plus, her father's name alone could protect her.
"You are welcome to try that. We would know who's at fault here."Cas dared. Their faces looked defeated realizing she wasn't moved by their threat.
Dr.Conner on the other hand stood beside me with a worried expression on his face.
"Is something wrong? You know they can't do anything to Cas right?" I whispered to him.
"I know but I will be held responsible at the end. My residency here would be at stake. I was tasked to make sure the parents of the patients understand everything about the surgery and get their consent as soon as possible but I failed." He explained with a downcast expression.
Thinking deeply,I realized what he said made sense. This matter could go down in his records and affect him in the future if he wanted to vie for president of the surgical department.
"Madam, sir,pardon my colleague here. She didn't mean what she said." I said making my presence known to them.
"Chris!"
Cas called in an aggrieved tone. I turned to her and stared intently at her.I shifted my gaze to Dr.Conner and she followed suit. Realizing the gravity at which this matter was going to become and the people that were going to suffer,she closed her mouth and backed off.
"And who are you if I may ask." The woman interrogated with contempt still vivid in her tone. Not taking what she said to heart,I answered;
"I'm Dr. Light. A surgeon at this hospital."
"Wait, are you the one known as the surgeon god?" He asked which I nodded.His eyes opened wide in amazement."Oh my God, I've heard alot of things about you. It's a pleasure finally meeting you in the flesh. "The man said reaching out his right hand for a handshake.
Surprise at the turn of events,I stretched my left arm and grasped his hand.
"Dear who is he?"The wife asked looking a bit wary when her husband's attitude rotated to a one hundred and eighty degrees all of a sudden.
"He's the man that saved the CEO of MedCo Media when he was on the verge of death."
Just like her husband, the expression on her face also changed. She gaped at me with her eyes widely opened. As if she had heard the shock of her life.
"Oh my God,I can't believe it is you right in front of me."she muttered, astonishment evident in her tone.
The story of me saving Mr.Medfield,the CEO of MedCo Media was one of the incidents that skyrocketed my fame in the whole city. I was on the internet for weeks. I had received alot of calls from television channels and radio stations to be interviewed. I had also been given invitations from big hospitals across the world to come work there. Of course I declined all these. My heart and family were all here in California and I wasn't ready to leave them.
"I'm so sorry for this." The man apologized suddenly. All of us including his wife were taken back.He then looked at his wife signaling her to do same. Refusing, she looked at him with the 'i won't apologize even if he's the the king 'expression on her face.
Knowing his wife was going still proof stubborn ,he gave her a stern look. That killer stare alone made the pompous woman mellow within seconds. It was like he had her at his beck and call.
"No need to apologize,no one is at fault here. We just had a small misunderstanding."
"Yes, just a small understanding. No big deal."He repeated, nodding his head continuously in agreement. Wow this wasn't the turn of events I was expecting. The only thing I did was introduce myself and this is how things resulted. Being popular really had its perks.
"Dr. Stones,I really apologize for my wife's behavior. She reacts this way anytime our daughter isn't well."
The woman looked at the man in surprise. She didn't expect her husband to pin all the blame on her after realizing they had messed with someone they shouldn't have.
"I'm deeply sorry. It's my fault. I shouldn't have acted that way towards you." She apologized to Cas who was still vexed knowing their apologies weren't genuine and they only put up a show because of me.
"I'm sorry,but I won't be able to carry out the surgery for your daughter."She blurted out which made everyone except me shocked. Of course I wasn't surprised. I knew Cas like the back of my hand. I wouldn't be lying if I said I saw this coming. Plus this isn't the first time she did that. She hated people who made her already complicated life more complicated.
"What do you mean by that? Are you going to let my daughter die?!!" The woman asked with her voice a little raised, gaining attention from the people around us.
"Shut up, will you?"Her husband also snapped with his hand raised a little at his wife. Was he about to hit her? The woman had noticed and out of impulse,she backed off a little. Wait,was he abusive to her? Did he hit his wife at home? He realized their actions had been seen by us and began to explain himself which I knew was under false pretense.
"There was bug bugging her and I wanted to swat it away." He looked at his wife lovingly who then forced a smile.
"I will take my leave then." Cas who was quiet for a while now said,deciding to leave and stop witnessing this annoying drama.
"But what about ..."
"I will do the surgery." I interrupted the woman before she could finish her sentence.
"You mean you would personally operate on my daughter?"The man asked eagerly waiting for my answer.
"My colleague seems to be under the weather so I will fill in for her.Which means I will be operating on your daughter. Hope you don't mind?"
"Of course not. It would be an honor. Especially for my daughter. She wants to become a surgeon like you. " He said with a big smile plastered on his face.
"I don't owe you anything for this. " I heard Cas whisper in my ears and finally left. The couple hadn't even realize their main surgeon had left as they were too engrossed in the fact that I was going to do the surgery for their daughter.
