Chapter 8 - Chapter 8: Aftershock

The silence didn't last.

A slow creaking groan echoed through the collapsed tunnel like a dying breath. Water trickled from burst pipes, forming small pools between broken concrete and twisted metal. The sharp scent of ozone lingered in the air, mixed with dust and the faint burn of scorched wiring. The faint plink of droplets echoed through the debris, amplifying the eerie stillness. The only light came from Eliza's flickering flashlight, now clutched tightly in her bruised hand as she pulled herself through the narrow gap in the rubble.

Every movement burned. Her side was bleeding, ribs aching. Each breath was shallow, her body protesting with every inch forward. She grunted softly with the effort, jaw clenched, but her eyes remained fixed on the point where Adam had stood—where the energy pulse had exploded outward and swallowed him.

She called again, voice cracking. "Adam? Adam, come on…"

Still no response.

Only the soft dripping of water and the distant groan of settling debris answered her.

Eliza gritted her teeth and pulled herself up onto a crumbling ledge. From there, she activated her wrist comm, fingers trembling. The digital screen blinked to life, casting a blue glow on her face. "Field Beacon—Code 97-Blue," she said, trying to steady her voice. "Initiate phase scan. Search for Brashear signature."

The small device blinked. Then blinked again. Then the screen went red: NO SIGNAL.

Her heart dropped.

She stared at the message, then at the flooded corridor below. It wasn't just a structural collapse. Something had erased his signal—completely wiped him from every traceable system.

"No way," she whispered. "You don't just vanish like that, Adam."

Her grip on the comm tightened. She wasn't ready to believe he was gone. Not after everything they'd been through. Not when she had seen him standing just seconds before.

Eliza staggered forward, her boot squishing into the murky water. She reached for her breaching tool and pulled it from her belt. It hissed to life with a low plasma hum, casting sparks onto the rusted floor. With effort, she cut into the bent hatch leading into an old maintenance shaft—one that hadn't seen use in decades. The panel groaned open, revealing a narrow passage choked with grime and dust.

She slipped inside.

The shaft was even tighter than the tunnel before, walls coated in filmy grime and rusted bolts. The air was stale, thick with mildew. She moved slowly, each step deliberate. Her flashlight caught broken signs on the wall: Sector Delta-7.Restricted Access.Project Perseus.

Eliza froze.

"Project Perseus?" she murmured, frowning. "That can't be right…"

She had heard that name before—just once, while digging through a redacted file buried deep in S.W.O.R.D.'s archives. It was a black ops initiative, classified beyond her level. The keywords were clear: antimatter manipulation. Temporal shielding. And… Brashear.

At the time, she thought it was just theoretical. A relic from the Cold War era. Some paranoid bureaucratic idea that never saw the light of day. Now? It felt like the past had just punched its way into the present.

Up ahead, she found a sealed door with a biometric panel. It was old, dusty—but intact. She reached out, pressed her hand against it.

To her surprise, it beeped. The lock disengaged with a heavy clunk.

Inside was a small lab, abandoned but intact. Dust covered consoles and metal surfaces, the air stale and heavy. Tangled wires drooped from broken ceiling panels. But one screen glowed faintly, still powered by a backup core. She stepped inside, her senses on edge. Screens lined the walls, most dead—except for one in the center.

It displayed a paused security feed.

Eliza approached it slowly, then tapped the screen.

The image sharpened.

And her blood ran cold.

It was Adam.

Standing upright. Healthy. Calm.

But he wasn't underground.

He was walking into a clean facility, flanked by two agents in dark suits. The timestamp confirmed it had been recorded two days before their escape mission.

She stared, stunned. "What the hell... That's not possible. He was with me. The whole time. There's no way—"

The feed looped. Again and again, the same footage played. Adam walking through the doors. Unbothered. Compliant.

Eliza leaned in closer, squinting. The facility in the footage had sterile white walls and glowing panels—completely different from the decrepit tunnel she had just crawled through. Then she spotted it: a logo on the agents' suits. Barely visible. But familiar.

An old S.W.O.R.D. logo.

Not the current one. The original. From decades ago. Back when the agency operated in complete secrecy, with almost no oversight.

"What the hell is going on…"

A sudden whirring noise made her spin.

A camera in the corner tilted toward her. It had just come online.

She wasn't alone.

Her hand went instinctively to her sidearm, though her fingers were still shaking. Behind a tinted glass window on the far wall, a figure moved. Tall, rigid posture. Arms behind his back.

The man pressed a comm device.

"Confirming Eliza Morrow's presence. Proceeding to Phase Two."

Eliza stepped forward, voice rising. "Hey! Who are you? What is this place? Why are you showing me that footage?!"

No response.

The figure didn't move.

Then, without warning, the lights in the lab shut off. Total darkness swallowed the room.

Her flashlight flickered once… then died.

Somewhere behind the glass, a low mechanical hum started to build.

Eliza's breath caught. She backed up, heart pounding.

Then something began to move in the shadows.
