Chapter 10 - Chapter 10: The Catalyst Breaks

Eliza's fingers hovered over the console, breath shallow, as the monitor pulsed with old encryption protocols. She'd bypassed the initial firewalls, but what lay beneath felt like something not meant to be seen. Lines of code scrolled in an eerie rhythm, like the heartbeat of a long-forgotten secret.

She clicked through a series of corrupted video logs, her eyes narrowing with each flicker. Most were garbled static. Then one file loaded—grainy footage, time-stamped from five years ago.

It showed Adam, walking calmly into a high-security facility under escort. He looked composed. Confident. Trusting. Behind him, agents flanked his sides. Everything appeared standard… until it didn't.

Then came the trap.

From the shadows, armed personnel closed in. Adam raised his hands, confused. No resistance. One tranquilizer dart hit his shoulder. He winced. Then another—square in his back. His body stiffened before collapsing in a heap.

The screen cut to black.

Eliza's stomach twisted. Her voice cracked with disbelief. "They set him up… This was never a mission."

The console beeped sharply, yanking her back. A new warning flashed red across the display:

CONTAINMENT BREACH DETECTED – SUB-LEVEL OMEGA

Her pulse surged. Instinct kicked in.

Frantically, she tapped into the breach logs. Camera feeds flickered and cut—some burned out, others manually overridden. She cycled through them until one stream remained.

A containment chamber. Suspended mid-air in a vertical energy field was Adam Brashear. Bruised. Restrained. Unconscious. But undeniably alive.

"Eliza…" she whispered, voice unsteady but gaining strength. "Hang in there, Adam."

—

Adam floated in light.

Each breath he took echoed like thunder underwater. Awareness returned in fragments—his body felt impossibly heavy, like the weight of his own power was pressing down.

Faint memories swirled in his mind—Eliza's voice calling out to him, the sterile cold of the chamber, the raw sting of betrayal.

He murmured, more to himself than anyone, "You really thought this would hold me?"

As if in response, the restraints tightened. Adam's jaw clenched. The energy pulses constricting him grew more intense, but his eyes began to glow faintly. The blue shimmer of antimatter danced at his fingertips.

Slowly, he bent the quantum fields around him. Particles shifted, orbiting his body like a microcosm forming in space.

The walls of the chamber shimmered with unstable light.

Alert: Power Flux Detected. Recalibrating Damping Fields.

The energy around him wavered as the chamber struggled to maintain control. His muscles shook under the strain, his breath coming sharper.

He reached out with more than just his hands—his consciousness expanded, probing through frequencies like sonar.

And then he felt it.

Faint. Frightened. Familiar.

Eliza.

"Eliza…"

Her name was a whisper of hope just as the failsafe engaged. A blinding burst of light erupted inside the chamber.

Deploying Neural Inhibitor.

A wave of pain cascaded through Adam's nervous system. His body convulsed once. Twice. The glow in his eyes flickered… and died.

Darkness claimed him again.

—

Above, in a sterile observation chamber lit by holographic projections, a S.W.O.R.D. agent stood motionless. His eyes watched the energy readings spike, then dip.

A large central monitor blinked. A new face appeared—hazy in shadow, only the mouth clearly visible.

"We told you this would happen if he woke up."

The agent replied coolly, "He's stronger than our original estimates. But we've triggered the inhibitor. He's down."

There was silence. Then the command came:

"Move forward. Begin Phase Two. Deploy the Null Array. If he wakes again, we end it. The Outlier cannot be allowed to roam free."

The transmission cut out.

—

Eliza crept deeper into the dim corridor, heart hammering. The metal beneath her boots creaked softly with every step. The fluorescent lights above buzzed and flickered, casting long shadows across the walls.

Ahead, a biometric scanner waited, its interface glowing red.

She hesitated—pulse racing—then pressed her palm to it.

Scanning... Identity confirmed. Access Granted – Sub-Level Omega

The heavy metal door hissed open. A rush of sterile air swept past her.

The chamber beyond was enormous. Vaulted ceilings. Glass catwalks. Tangled power conduits. Most containment pods were cracked open, long emptied.

But one still glowed.

Adam.

He hung in the energy field, limp and suspended like a broken marionette. His body bore bruises, small burns, signs of prolonged stasis.

Eliza's voice caught. "Adam…"

She stepped forward, slowly—each movement careful, reverent.

But her instincts screamed. Something was wrong.

A high-pitched whir split the silence.

From above, a sleek silver drone dropped into view, optics glowing crimson. Its sensors locked onto her in an instant.

"UNAUTHORIZED PRESENCE DETECTED. INITIATING TERMINATION PROTOCOL."

The drone's weapon ports flared.

Eliza dove behind the nearest console as a beam of light slammed into the floor behind her, blasting a chunk of metal to dust.

A second shot followed, narrowly missing her head. Sparks flew. The air filled with the stench of burning insulation.

She peeked out, desperate. No cover. No backup. No time.

Her gaze flicked to Adam.

Still unmoving.

Still unreachable.

Teeth clenched, she made a break for it—vaulting over the shattered console, sprinting straight toward the exit.

The drone rotated, tracking her with mechanical precision.

Another shot fired.

Eliza barely dodged it.

And then she ran—right into the drone's path.
