Chapter 16 - Chapter 16: Into the Core

The air grew heavier with each step Adam took. The spiral staircase wound downward like an endless coil, its walls lined with cables, rusted pipes, and flickering lights that gave off an eerie, pulsing glow. Every few steps, he had to steady himself, the thickening atmosphere pressing in like the weight of a bad memory. The echo of his footsteps against the metal was the only sound accompanying him, and even that seemed swallowed by the growing darkness.

He finally reached the bottom, emerging into a narrow hallway that opened up into a massive, sealed door. Unlike the ancient tech above, this one was different—sleek, polished, reinforced with alloys that shimmered faintly under the overhead light. Energy pulsed gently across its surface in slow, rhythmic patterns, as though the door itself was breathing.

To his right, a control panel blinked to life. The interface projected a soft blue glow.

His fingers hovered over the screen. "Here goes nothing," he murmured, not entirely convinced.

He pressed his hand to the panel. A line of light swept across his palm, scanning it. The panel responded with a soft chime and a blinking message: ACCESS GRANTED.

The door let out a mechanical groan and slid open, revealing a chamber that took his breath away.

Inside was a space far more advanced than anything he had seen above. Holographic monitors floated in midair, each displaying dynamic data feeds—readings of multiversal currents, chronal distortions, and anomalies spiking across timelines. It was like peering into the nervous system of the universe.

At the center of the chamber stood a circular console, surrounded by concentric rings of light. Hovering just above the console was a glowing orb, about the size of a basketball, slowly rotating and pulsing with soft energy.

Adam stepped closer, jaw tight and brow furrowed. "Please tell me you've got some answers."

A voice replied, calm and clear. "Not all of them. But enough to get started."

Adam flinched, instinctively turning to find the source—but there was no one else in the room.

"You're... what? An AI?"

"Yes. I am the Operator," the voice said evenly. "This facility was built to monitor dimensional integrity and stabilize anomalies caused by the Nexus Fault."

Adam rubbed his temple, skepticism creeping in. "Okay, and what exactly is a Nexus Fault?"

"The point at which multiple realities converge and destabilize. If left unchecked, they collapse into singularities. You experienced one such collapse. That was merely one possible future."

He stared up at the orb, the weight of it all sinking in. "So I'm cleaning up a disaster that hasn't happened yet?"

"Correct. But you are not trapped. You were chosen. A version of you volunteered for this task."

Adam let out a breathy chuckle, part amused, part annoyed. "Of course I did. Figures."

He paced a little, then steadied his breathing. "Alright. What's the next step?"

"Phase One is active. Temporal restoration has begun. You must recalibrate the breach anchors—one located here, and three scattered across Earth."

The lights dimmed briefly, then focused on a large monitor behind the orb. A map of Earth flickered into view, three red dots blinking ominously.

Adam squinted at the display, then gave a dry laugh. "Because of course it's always Earth..."

Suddenly, a metallic clang echoed down the corridor behind him. Adam turned sharply, muscles tense.

Footsteps. Slow, deliberate.

From the corridor emerged a figure clad in dark armor, face hidden behind a smooth, visor-like mask. A pulse weapon hung in his gloved hand.

"You're not supposed to be here," the figure said. His voice was filtered, cold, but undeniably human.

Adam instinctively raised his hands slightly. "Seriously? Again with this? Look, I'm just trying to figure things out."

The figure didn't budge. "This isn't a second chance. It's a warning."

Adam's tone turned dry. "Ever heard of email?"

The figure raised his weapon. "Let's see if you're really him."

Before Adam could react, the lights in the room exploded into crimson, alarms blaring.

"INTRUSION DETECTED," the Operator declared. "Defense protocol active."

The figure fired.

Adam dove behind the console as the blast scorched the wall where he had been.

Holograms scattered, sparks flew, and the chamber descended into chaos. Adam clutched the edge of the console, heart pounding, mind racing.

This wasn't just about survival anymore. This was the beginning of something bigger. Something dangerous.
