Chapter 15 - Chapter 15: Echoes of the Future

The silence in the chamber was deafening.

Adam stood frozen, his breath caught in his throat, as he stared at the glowing capsule in front of him. Encased in shimmering containment glass was a figure—older, more worn—but undeniably him. The shock hit him like a punch to the gut. His feet moved involuntarily, slowly approaching the capsule, his heart pounding louder with every step.

"What... what is this?" he muttered, his voice barely above a whisper.

His suit's HUD flickered with static, the display glitching with corrupted biometric data. Code scrolled erratically, warnings flared red across his vision. Memory synchronization initializing… Then—

A blinding flash tore through his sight.

Adam gasped and clutched his head as a surge of foreign memories flooded into his mind. He staggered backward, a sharp pain pulsing behind his eyes. Images—disjointed, raw, horrifying—rushed past:

A shattered New York skyline. Towers collapsing into fire and smoke. A sky dyed in swirling, unnatural hues. Grotesque creatures tearing through the fabric of dimensions.

And then…

His own voice—gravelly, aged, weary. "If you're seeing this… then we failed. But maybe you still have time."

He fell to one knee, his gloved hand slamming onto the cold metal floor. "No… this has to be some kind of illusion. A simulation…"

But deep down, he knew it wasn't.

A hologram flickered to life beside the capsule, revealing an older Adam. He looked drained, as if carrying the weight of a thousand battles. His eyes, dim and distant, locked onto Adam's.

"I tried to contain it," the older Adam began, voice low and hoarse. "Tried to undo what I set in motion. But time doesn't offer second chances. You weren't supposed to find this place. But if you did... the damage is already spreading."

Adam shook his head. "Why? Who set this in motion? Who did this to us?"

The hologram hesitated, then answered softly, "There's no mastermind. No shadowy figure to blame. Only a choice. And I made the wrong one."

Before Adam could respond, the lights overhead dimmed and began to flicker. A shrill siren echoed through the chamber.

WARNING: Temporal instability detected. Facility lockdown initiating.

Adam's HUD erupted in a frenzy, red icons and diagnostics racing across the interface. The facility's core was destabilizing. Hairline cracks spidered across the capsule's surface, and a low hum vibrated through the floor. The air thickened, as if reality itself was bending inward.

His breath quickened. Something was wrong—deeply wrong.

Then he felt it.

A ripple in the air near the rear wall. Like heat waves, but sharper, more unnatural.

He turned slowly. "I'm... not alone in here."

Far above, hidden within a shadowy observation deck, two silhouettes stood quietly.

"He activated it," one said, barely louder than a breath. "The failsafe is live."

"Perfect," the other replied, voice cool and dispassionate. "Now let's see if he can survive where the last one fell."

Back below, the ground beneath Adam shifted. A metallic grinding gave way to a circular platform receding into the floor. From the center, a spiral staircase revealed itself, descending into darkness.

Above the entrance, etched in glowing blue script, were the words: PROJECT REACTIVATION: PHASE I.

Adam stared. He glanced once more at the fading hologram of his future self and the weakening capsule that held him.

"I don't know what's down there," he murmured, his voice steady now. "But I'm done standing still."

With a deep breath, he stepped onto the staircase and vanished into the shadows below.
