Wherever he passed, lightning flashed and thunder roared. The Zetari warriors in the air were blasted into dust beneath the thunder's fury.
At that moment, another deafening boom erupted as Xu Fu appeared atop the head of a colossal star-beast.
His cloak billowed violently behind him. He lowered his body, lifted one leg, and brought his foot down hard onto the creature's skull.
Boom!
A shockwave of ionized lightning exploded outward.
As if struck by a falling planet, the star-beast let out a pitiful, drunken howl. Its massive body lurched, lost balance, and plunged from the sky.
"Moo—"
The front half of the monster's body shattered instantly. The remaining half, hurled forward by inertia, slammed into the city, causing nearby skyscrapers to collapse one after another.
On the ground, the Captain of the Beautiful Nation and Black Widow stared in shock at the scene before them.
The star-beast was hundreds of meters long—yet Xu Fu had shattered it with a single strike!
"Oh my God…" Captain America murmured.
"Hey, Steve, do you think the Hulk could do that?" Black Widow asked.
Captain America smashed two approaching Zetari soldiers aside with his shield and replied, "Maybe he could—but… the Hulk can't fly."
"Yes, Hulk can't fly," Black Widow echoed, continuing to fight the invaders.
From the portal in the sky came another thunderous roar. Several more star giants drifted out above New York City.
Iron Man concentrated all his firepower on the leading behemoth's head.
Boom! Rumble! Boom! Rumble! Rumble!
The intense barrage pierced through the interstellar behemoth's armored skull. The final miniature anti-tank projectile penetrated its brain and detonated with a deafening explosion.
The star-beast didn't even have time to howl before its enormous body collapsed, crushing countless buildings along its path.
But more star-beasts continued pouring out of the sky, scattering in every direction. Dense swarms of Zetari soldiers on flying craft surged toward Iron Man like a hornet's nest that had been violently disturbed.
"Son of a—!"
Tony cursed inside the armor, instantly turning to retreat while firing backward nonstop.
"Sir, onboard weapons are depleted," JARVIS reported.
Tony quickly checked the suit's status. The weapon systems were exhausted, and over a third of the suit's energy reserves had already been consumed.
With a massive Zetari force chasing him, Tony felt a growing headache.
"Help! Calling Xu Fu! Seven or eight more giant monsters just came through the portal—requesting immediate support! And seriously, can anyone help me? I'm completely surrounded!"
At that moment, the weaknesses of the Iron Man suit were fully exposed.
Limited by current Earth technology, Tony had focused primarily on solving the problem of deploying and carrying a steel combat suit.
What he was wearing now was the not-yet-fully-developed Mark VII.
The Mark VII's greatest strength wasn't combat capability, but its long-distance recall function—a technology later refined into the Mark XLII's automatic deployment system.
As a result, its weapons system simply wasn't designed for prolonged combat.
Hearing Tony's desperate call, both Xu Fu's and Thor's voices sounded simultaneously over the channel.
"Roger!"
"I'm on my way!"
Boom—crack!
Two thunderclaps exploded across the sky.
The first bolt was enormous—thick as a giant tree—tearing through the heavens and sending a shockwave across the entire skyline.
A spear-shaped bolt of divine lightning pierced the sky and slammed down onto a star-beast.
Rumble! Rumble! Boom!
In an instant, the creature's body detonated. Its metallic armor disintegrated, and flesh and blood scattered like a torrential downpour.
The lightning spear didn't stop. After piercing the first star-beast, it continued forward for several kilometers, smashing straight through the body of another giant.
The second lightning bolt was much smaller.
Like a massive branch hurled through the air, it swept toward Iron Man.
Whoosh—
The moment Iron Man saw Thor swing Mjolnir, he sharply veered ninety degrees. Before the Zetari forces behind him could react, Thor's thunder struck them head-on.
Crack! Crack! Boom!
Most of the pursuing Zetari army was wiped out instantly.
"Thanks, Hammer God!" Iron Man shouted, soaring upward and waving at Thor.
As the saying goes, comparison creates contrast. Without Xu Fu, Thor might well have been competing for MVP of the battlefield.
But—
After Xu Fu annihilated two star-beasts in seconds, signs of divine energy exhaustion finally began to appear.
He immediately changed tactics.
Instead of relying on large-scale strikes, he dove directly into the Zetari horde. His heat vision erupted, sweeping across the battlefield and engulfing thousands of enemies.
Before Xu Fu's blazing gaze, even the star-beasts could only flee.
The moment he swooped past, their massive bodies were sliced cleanly in half.
Iron Man hadn't noticed it before, but watching Xu Fu unleash his heat vision now triggered a strange sense of familiarity.
"Hey," Tony said over the channel, "has anyone ever noticed that Xu Fu's abilities look a lot like a superhero from a certain comic?"
Captain America, Black Widow, and Thor were silent—none of them read comics.
Director Fury's voice suddenly cut in.
"You're not talking about DC Comics, are you?"
"Yes! Exactly!" Tony exclaimed, suddenly enlightened. "That hero I loved years ago—the one who can fly, wield weapons, shoot lightning… and has heat vision just like Superman! And most importantly—didn't you notice? He even has a similar emblem on his chest!"
"That hero belongs to the DC universe and usually only appears at the final battle against ultimate darkness!"
Director Fury, unusually interested, added, "When the Avengers initiative was formed, the name was actually borrowed from him…"
At that moment, as Xu Fu pierced straight through another star-beast, he overheard the conversation over the comms—and froze.
There being DC Comics in the Marvel universe was nothing new.
But the 'Avenger' they were talking about…
It couldn't possibly be him, could it?
No way.
Am I becoming a comic-book hero now?
Once, everyone around him had been characters from comics.
And now, he was becoming one himself.
"I've taken out all the star-beasts," Xu Fu said over the channel, regaining focus. "But listen—no matter how hard we fight, it's meaningless unless we close the portal."
He continued calmly, "The energy wave frequency of the Cosmic Cube matches that of Psychic Gamma. Psychic Gamma can penetrate the barrier generated by the Cosmic Cube and destabilize it."
Director Fury fell silent for a moment.
Then he said decisively, "I know what to do. Coulson—deliver the Mind Gem to the front line."
"Yes, sir," Coulson replied, his expression unchanged, clearly accustomed to missions like this.
