At the O'Daniel's residence, Kane and the team was welcomed by the family butler who showed them to the living room.
Looking around, Kane was taking a mental note of everything that was in the house. From the way the house interior was done to the pictures that were framed and put on top of the fireplace.
Kane was accompanied by Ethan and Jenna. On the way to the house, Ethan looked at the file that he was given with the forensic report about the car.
As Kane had speculated, the forensics team had found nothing. Not a single trace of DNA was left in that car. The guy at the carwash did a good job at cleaning it. One could say, he did the job too good.
They dusted it for prints and put it under tests to check for sighs of previous blood spilled that was washed. And still, nothing was found.
Jenna was there to see Kane in action, as Marcus had instructed. On her side, she kept wondering why Marcus was so confident with Kane.
"I can see that the last agent who was here already got a statement from you and your family," Kane commented, as he looked at the case file.
"Yes he did," Layla responded, settling in her seat.
"I might have to ask a few things that you've already been asked, so kindly bear with me. From my first glance, I'm assuming your husband isn't the type of person to flash his wealth. That would explain the make of the car that he drove, right?" He asked, leaning back into the seat.
Layla shook her head. But as she was about to say something, a young man walked into the living room.
"I'm sorry, I didn't know that the cops are back. Has something come up?" The lad asked, looking at Layla.
Kane looked at him and at the picture in the file that was in his hands. Comparing the two men, he could see quite the resemblance. From the shape of their noses to the way they stood.
"You must be the son, I'm sorry we don't have any update yet," Kane answered, getting the attention of the son.
"I'm Asher. Asher O'Daniel, nice to meet you. And who might you be?" Asher inquired, stretching his hand to shake Kane's hand.
"I'm Alex Kane, I'm just here as a consultant," Kane responded.
Asher stood there for a second as he processed the name Alex Kane. His eyes then went a bit wide with shock as he finally recalled where he had heard the name.
He turned to his mother who was shaking her head, confirming to him that the man in their house was indeed Kane.
"I remember you. My father never stopped talking about you. I'm glad that you're helping with the case." Asher said with a smile as he took a seat next to his mom.
"They were just asking about your father. Like the kind of man he was," Layla updated Asher, looking at him with a weak smile.
"Oh, my dad was one of the kindest souls you could ever come across. He didn't talk too much, always did his thing and knew when to speak. He was also meticulous, ran by a program day in, day out. He is what one would call predicable. Wake up in the morning, gets ready and goes to work. In the evening he'd always be home before supper and was never late with more than an hour." Asher summarized for them.
"And when he didn't come home, you knew that something had to be wrong," Ethan chimmed in as both O'Daniels shook their heads.
"You said something about the car being a distraction," Layla said as she remembered Kane's words.
Without looking at them, Kane responded, "Yes, your husband wasn't taken in The Heights District. I mean, who kidnaps someone in this kind of neighborhood? It's like poking a bear with a very short stick,"
As he spoke, Alex had his sights on someone who was standing in the distance looking into the living room. If it were not for his keen eye, he wouldn't even have seen her.
"We might have an update on the case," Kane said, a bit too loud but just enough for the person peeking to hear.
All eyes turned to him, confused and wondering what he meant. However, the person standup in the distance finally walked out when she heard him. She came fast into the living room, and directly to Kane.
"You do?" She asked, her eyes fixed on him, searching if he was telling the truth.
"Your must be the secretary, Quinn. It's a bit weird don't you think?" Kane quizzed as he looked around.
"Weird, how? She just came to try and help since my husband went missing," Lyla responded, wondering where the conversation was headed.
"You work, or worked with him at his place of work, right?" Kane inquired, seeking confirmation.
Quinn shook her head and Kane looked at Ethan, wondering whether he was the only one who saw it as odd. But from the look that Ethan gave him, he could tell that he was the only one who saw it that way.
"I'm just surprised that the secretary is more concerned with finding her boss, to the point where she has stayed at his house for a few days, waiting for any news. And I'm even more surprised that I'm the one who finds that odd," Kane commented, look around the entire room.
"She's worked with my father for years. Of course she is worried about her whereabouts. Plus, she's been close to our family ever since she was hired by my dad," Asher added, defending Quinn.
"Mrs O'Daniel, you asked me to come and help you, and I will do that. You won't like my methods," Kane cautioned.
"I'm fine with that," Layla responded.
That was Kane's go ahead to start working. And to do that, he needed to make sure that there was transparency with the family.
"Well for a start, I need Quinn to tell everyone why she's actually here. And I insist that she doesn't say she's here because her boss is missing. There's more to it than she's saying," Kane stated, as he turned to face her and so did the rest.
