Chapter 5 The Fall of the Droid

[SYSTEM: Warning. Host has been exposed to alien metal. Non-biological assimilation failed. Recommended action: Use Zygon DNA to create physical disguise for escape.]

[SYSTEM: Host's empathic link to Ood DNA is now active. Recommended action: use to sense emotional turmoil.]

[Time – A Few Minutes After Landing – TBD] [Location – A Victorian Alleyway, London] [Date – TBD, 1888]

The air in the alley was thick with the smell of wet pavement and soot. They had landed in a dark, grimy corner of a city Adam had only ever read about. The rhythmic clack-clack-clack was getting louder, and from the mouth of the alley, a tall, slender figure emerged. It was a man in a long coat, with a strange, metallic face that looked like a clockwork automaton. The gears on its cheek clicked audibly, but its eyes, two bright blue lights, were filled with a terrible sadness.

"Doctor," Clara whispered, pulling on his sleeve. "Is that a...?"

"A clockwork droid," the Doctor said, his eyes narrowing. "From the Promised Land. The Heaven's Gate. He shouldn't be here. They were all repurposed."

The droid saw them and froze, its hands raising in a gesture of surrender. Its voice was a series of clicks and whirs, but a lyrical, mournful voice spoke over it. "Please. I am not with them. I am not a hunter. I am... hiding."

Adam felt a pang of sympathy. The droid was damaged, a large dent in its shoulder, and one of its mechanical eyes was flickering erratically. He stepped forward, a hand raised in a gesture of peace. He'd tried to mimic a microbe and failed, but maybe he could mimic a machine? He tried, but all he felt was the familiar, frustrating resistance. It was non-biological, and the Mimic System was a biological tool.

"You can't copy a machine, you idiot," the System's voice chimed. "It's not alive."

The droid looked at Adam, its blue eyes focused, and a flicker of something in its voice changed. It wasn't the lyrical voice anymore. It was its own. "You are... like me. You are hunted."

A new sound, the soft patter of footsteps, echoed from the other end of the alley. A woman in a beautiful, flowing dress came running towards the droid, her face a mask of concern.

"Henry!" she cried, rushing to his side. "I told you to stay in the house! They're still looking for you!"

She saw the trio and froze, her eyes scanning them, her expression a mix of caution and fear. "Who are you? What do you want with him?"

"We're helping him," Clara said, her voice reassuring. "We're friends."

The woman's expression softened, and she took the droid's hand. "We love each other. I know it's not... normal. But he's not a monster. He's trying to be free. The others... they hunt him. They want to force him to be one of them again. A hunter for the Promised Land."

Adam looked at the droid's mechanical face, and with the Ood's psychic DNA, he felt a wave of sadness. The droid's love for the woman was genuine. A true, pure emotion that was so at odds with its mechanical nature.

[Time – A Few Minutes Later – TBD] [Location – A Victorian Apartment] [Date – TBD, 1888]

The woman, whose name was Lydia, took them back to her small, beautifully decorated apartment. The droid, Henry, sat on a chair, its head tilted, listening intently as the Doctor explained his situation.

"The Promised Land is a myth," the Doctor said, his voice low and serious. "It's a control group. A database. They use you to hunt those who are... unwanted. Those with a different kind of power. People like you, and like him." He gestured to Adam.

Lydia looked at Adam, and her expression changed. A calculating, almost predatory glint entered her eyes. She smiled, a soft, alluring expression, and before Adam could react, she leaned in and kissed him on the cheek.

Adam felt a cold, sharp shock. The kiss wasn't a gesture of affection. It was a transfer. An attack.

[SYSTEM: Warning. Psychic attack detected. Host is being probed. The attacker is attempting to retrieve information from the Host's memory. Recommended action: Engage Ood DNA for psychic shield.]

Adam closed his eyes, and he felt the familiar, gentle hum of the Ood's psychic presence rise up in his mind, a warm, protective barrier. The psychic probe hit the shield, and Adam felt the backlash, a wave of pain and fury from Lydia. She pulled away, her smile gone, replaced by a cold, hateful sneer.

"You're not a normal one, are you?" she said, her voice sharp as a razor. "I've been hunting them for years. Your kind. You're too well defended. The others just crumble."

"What are you talking about?" Clara said, her voice filled with a terrible, dawning realization.

"My name is Lydia," she said, her eyes fixed on Adam. "And I work for a group called the 'Oracles.' We hunt those who have been gifted with unnatural powers. People like him, with a Mimic System. We find them, we drain them, and we repurpose their power for a higher purpose. A purpose of our own."

The droid, Henry, looked at her, his head tilted in confusion. "Lydia... what are you talking about?"

Lydia's smile was cruel. "I'm talking about a better future, Henry. I used you. I pretended to love you. All to find more of your kind. And you, little toy," she said, looking back at Adam, "you're just another one of them. A tool to be used."

Adam felt a cold fury rising in his chest. I'm not a tool.

The droid, Henry, took a step back, his gears clicking frantically. The blue lights in his eyes flickered. "You lied... you lied to me..."

Lydia scoffed. "Love is for humans. I am a leader. I have a mission. And now, I have a new target."

She pulled out a small, metallic device, and the droid's face began to flicker violently. Henry screamed, a mechanical shriek of pure, heartbreaking betrayal, and then, with a final, heartbreaking click, his body went limp, and his blue eyes went dark.

Adam watched, horrified, as the droid crumpled to the floor, its final moments filled with a sense of immense sorrow and betrayal. He looked at Lydia, and the Ood's empathic DNA gave him a glimpse into her mind. She felt nothing. No guilt, no remorse. Just a cold, calculating victory.
