Chapter 10: The Laughing Ghost
[SYSTEM: Warning. Host is experiencing severe psychological trauma. The entity is a psychic tormentor. Recommended action: disengage from the psychic link or risk permanent memory damage.]
[Location – Subterranean Silurian City]
The gas cloud pressed in on them, and Adam felt its psychic presence seep into his mind, not as a physical force, but as a chilling, psychological one. It was a poison for the soul, and it began to whisper.
For the Doctor, it was a cascade of memories, a torrent of all the lives he had lived, all the faces he had worn. He saw the face of the War Doctor, a grim and terrible visage, and the voice of the gas cloud whispered, "You ran from this. You hid this. You are a coward. You are a war criminal. You are a monster." The Doctor's hands clenched into fists, his face a mask of old, forgotten pain.
For Clara, it was a flash of her own past, a parade of all her lives, all her deaths. The gas cloud whispered, "The Impossible Girl. You are not a person. You are a paradox. You are an idea. You have no home. You have no purpose. You are just a broken piece of a broken man's story." Clara's breath hitched in her throat, her eyes wide with a terrible, silent terror.
And for Adam, it was a torrent of all his failures. The gas cloud whispered, "You are a thief. You stole a life. You stole a body. You stole a future. You are a lie. And you are a tool. A piece of technology. You have no name. You have no family. You have no purpose. And the Mimic System... it isn't yours."
[SYSTEM: Warning. Host is experiencing extreme psychological trauma. The entity is revealing the truth. The Mimic System is a stolen technology. It was not created for the user. It was created by a Time Lord, for the Time War. You are a thief. You stole this. You are a tool.]
The voice, the System's voice, was a cold, clinical horror, a final, terrible confirmation. Adam was not special. He was a mistake. He was a piece of stolen property. A tool for an unknown purpose. His very identity was a lie.
He fell to his knees, his mind reeling. "A thief. A tool. My life... it's a lie."
"Laugh, little ghost," the gas cloud hissed, a cold, mocking sound. "Laugh at the thief who stole a lie. Laugh at the paradox who is nothing. Laugh at the coward who runs from his past. Laugh at the new race who will be born from your bones!"
[Location – The Silurian City's Entrance]
The gas cloud pulsed, a shimmering green horror that was about to consume them all. The Doctor, lost in his memories, was on his knees. Clara was frozen in place, a statue of terror. Adam was broken, his mind shattered by the revelation. They were about to die.
And then, a sound. The gentle, humming sound of a teleportation beam. A bright, shimmering light enveloped them, and a new voice, a calm, female voice, cut through the gas cloud's psychic static.
"I am here to rescue you," the voice said, and the gas cloud shrieked, a high-pitched, furious scream.
The light intensified, and Adam felt the gas cloud's psychic grip snap, the pain replaced by a blissful nothingness. He was pulled through a vortex of light and color, and when he landed, the smell of ozone and burnt wiring was replaced by the clean, sterile scent of a high-tech lab.
He looked up, and before him stood a woman with a kind, determined face. She was holding a device that looked like a complicated scanner, and her eyes were filled with a strange, analytical curiosity.
"Hello, Doctor," she said, her voice a calm, even tone. "You're late. I've been waiting for you."
The gas cloud's laugh echoed faintly in his mind, but it was distant now, a memory. The voice of his new rescuer, however, was a cold, hard fact. She was here. And she knew who he was.
