Chapter 11: The Time Heist's Architect
[SYSTEM: New entity detected. Designation: Saibra, Time Agent. Warning: This entity's memory of the user is compromised. Recommend extreme caution.]
[Location – A Safe House, London, 2015]
The safe house was a small, two-bedroom apartment, clean and minimalist. Adam, the Doctor, and Clara sat on a plush couch, a silent, traumatized trio. The woman, Saibra, was making tea, her movements calm and efficient.
"I've been tracking you for a while," Saibra said, her back to them. "Well, not you, Doctor. I've been tracking him." She gestured to Adam with a flick of her head. "I'm a Time Agent. We hunt down rogue mimics. People who have... lost their identity and are now stealing others."
The Doctor, still recovering from the psychological attack, was suspicious, his eyes narrowed. "Saibra. I remember you. You worked with the Master. You were a master thief. A chameleon."
"I was," Saibra said, turning to face them, a small, knowing smile on her face. "But I've changed. I saw the error of my ways. The Master is a monster. I'm a hunter now. And my prey... is the perfect mimic. A person who can steal memories, absorb them, and then perfectly replicate the form. Down to the smallest detail."
She looked at Adam, her gaze intense. "My mission is to hunt a person who has done exactly that. He has stolen a Time Lord's life. He has stolen the identity of a rogue Time Agent. And he is about to become a galactic threat. He has a device. A system. One that lets him take any identity he wants."
Adam's blood ran cold. He knew what she was talking about. His Mimic System.
"What are you talking about?" Clara said, her voice filled with confusion. "Adam doesn't steal people's memories. He absorbs DNA."
"He thinks he does," Saibra said, taking a sip of her tea. "But the memories he has are not his own. The DNA he thinks he's absorbing is just a catalyst for the real purpose of the System. To take a person's life, and become them. He has been unconsciously mimicking people all along."
[Location – The Safe House]
The Doctor, his mind now clear, was scanning Adam with his sonic screwdriver, a grim expression on his face. The scanner was humming, and the screen was flashing, a chaotic, impossible mess of data.
"It's true," the Doctor said, his voice a low, horrified whisper. "He's not just Adam. He's an echo. A perfect copy. He has all the biological markers of a normal human, but the underlying psychic imprint... it's a blank slate. He's been filling it in with stolen memories and identities. He's not a boy. He's a lie. He's a perfect mimic."
Adam's mind reeled. The gas cloud's words came rushing back. You are a thief. You stole a life. You stole a body. You stole a future.
"But... I remember my life," Adam said, his voice shaking. "I remember my family. I remember... everything."
"Those aren't your memories," Saibra said, her voice gentle, but with a terrible finality. "They're a composite. A lie the System created to make you think you were real. The real you... the real you is a blank slate. You are a perfect, clean slate. The perfect weapon."
Adam felt a cold, terrible emptiness. He wasn't a person. He was a machine. A vessel. He had no identity. He had no past. He was a lie.
He looked at the Doctor, and he saw the suspicion in his eyes. The fear. The Doctor was looking at him not as a companion, but as a threat.
"They don't see me as a person. They see me as a thing."
Adam's mind was a maelstrom of fear and anger. He felt betrayed. By the System. By the Doctor. By everyone. He had a choice. He could stay here and let them experiment on him, or he could run.
He made his choice.
He turned and ran, a blur of motion, towards the door. Saibra, a professional, was on him in a second, but Adam, in a desperate, panicked moment, used his new-found Silurian speed, a flash of motion that was a mix of human agility and alien reflexes. He slipped past her, the door open, and he was gone.
