Chapter 250 - The Calm after the Storm

Daphne leaned against Alaric as they walked back to their chambers.

When they entered their room, Alice quietly excused herself, leaving them alone. The fire had been lit earlier, casting a warm glow across the room.

Nathaniel was already asleep in his cradle, wrapped snugly in soft white cloth.

Daphne paused beside him, her expression softening instantly. "He looks so peaceful."

Alaric stood behind her, his eyes were on their son. "He gets that from you."

She smiled faintly, brushing Nathaniel's tiny hand with her finger. "He has your eyes."

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

When Daphne turned to face him, she caught the exhaustion in his eyes, the weight he carried was heavier than anything he'd ever worn into battle.

"You haven't rested," she said gently.

He gave a dry, humorless laugh. "I don't remember how."

She took a small step toward him. "Then let me remind you."
