Chapter 31 - Target Escapes from the Hospital—Pursue Immediately!

The sterile white halls of Yokohama General were too quiet. The hum of fluorescent lights and the occasional squeak of rubber soles on tile echoed faintly, but beneath that stillness was a tension Akira could almost taste. It was late, but the weight of the past days left sleep impossible.

Kikoru Shinomiya sat stiffly in the chair by his bedside, arms crossed, chin lifted in her usual proud fashion. She had spent most of the evening needling him about his "reckless tendencies," though by now her words had dulled into silence. Reno had returned from visiting Kafka earlier, his steps heavy with exhaustion.

Akira leaned back, feigning casualness, but his senses stayed sharp. Something in the air felt… wrong.

[Ravan: Ambient anomaly detected. Pressure shift on sub-basement level. Source matches kaiju-type bio signature, small-scale infiltration.]

Akira's eyes narrowed. "So it's starting," he muttered.

"What's starting?" Kikoru asked, her brows furrowing.

"Nothing you need to panic about yet," Akira replied smoothly, waving it off. But his gaze lingered toward the floor. Kafka's room was down there.

In that very room, Kafka Hibino lay awake, staring at the ceiling. His ribs still ached from the kaiju attack earlier, and Reno's words—"Let's promise to join the Defense Force together!"—echoed in his head. He wanted to believe them. He wanted to believe he still had time.

The sudden creak of the window made him jolt upright. Something small but grotesque slithered in, its insectoid limbs twitching, eyes glowing faintly.

Kafka's blood ran cold. "Wh—what the hell…?"

The thing hissed. "Found you."

Before Kafka could shout, it leapt, forcing its way down his throat. His body convulsed violently, every nerve screaming fire. His vision blurred, chest burning, bones shifting beneath his skin.

"No… stop—!"

Reno pushed the door open a moment later, carrying two bottles of water. "Senpai, I thought you might—"

He froze.

On the bed writhed a figure no longer recognizably human. Kafka's skin split along glowing blue seams, his muscles bulging unnaturally. His face twisted, a maw of fangs opening where his familiar grin should have been.

"Senpai…?" Reno whispered, his hands trembling.

Kafka stumbled to his feet, catching sight of himself in the mirror on the wall. For a heartbeat his reflection stared back in horror—the boy who dreamed of fighting kaiju. Then the monster blinked back at him.

"No… no, this isn't—!" Kafka's voice warbled, half-human, half-guttural growl.

Before Reno could move, a startled shout came from the hallway. An elderly patient had seen everything. His phone was already at his ear.

"Defense Force! There's a monster in the hospital!"

The alarms blared instantly. Red lights strobed along the walls.

On the upper floor, Kikoru shot to her feet. "A monster?! Here?!"

Akira closed his eyes, piecing the scene together without needing to see it. He exhaled softly.

[Ravan: Host Kafka Hibino has undergone forced assimilation event. Classification: unstable humanoid-kaiju hybrid.]

"…So that's how it happens," Akira murmured.

Kikoru turned on him. "You know something, don't you?!"

He only smiled faintly. "Maybe. Maybe not. Either way, running down there won't help. If Kafka's still himself, Reno will reach him first."

Back in the room, Reno stepped forward, desperation outweighing his fear. "Kafka, it's me! It's Reno! You're not a monster—you're still you!"

Kafka's monstrous claws flexed. He wanted to answer, to reassure him. But his throat only managed a guttural snarl. The sound made Reno flinch, yet he didn't back away.

The window shattered as Kafka leapt through it, glass raining down.

"Senpai, wait—!" Reno sprinted after him without hesitation.

At Tachikawa Base, Captain Soshiro Hoshina had been reviewing footage when the red alert blared across his monitors. His chair screeched against the floor as he stood.

"Monster sighting at Yokohama General," the operator reported.

Hoshina's swords gleamed under the fluorescent light. His lips curved into a sharp grin. "Finally. All surveillance units, move in now. Don't let the target slip."

Back in Akira's room, the door burst open. A squad of Defense Force operatives stormed in, weapons raised.

Akira Kurogiri ! Hands where we can see them!"

Kikoru's eyes went wide. "What do you think you're doing?!"

One of the soldiers barked, "A humanoid kaiju just broke out. We can't rule out connections!"

Kikoru planted herself firmly between Akira and their rifles. "You idiots, he's been here the entire time! I'll report this to my father personally!"

Seibuya, the Shinomiya butler, stepped forward with quiet menace, his gloved hand brushing the hilt of the blade he carried. "Lower your guns. Now."

The squad hesitated. Nobody wanted to cross the Shinomiya family's shadow.

Akira stood, stretching leisurely. "Easy, everyone. If you think I'm the monster, then bring Captain Ashiro. I'd love to clear this up face to face."

His calm tone only further unsettled the soldiers. One whispered into his comm, relaying the situation to HQ.

Meanwhile, Reno trailed Kafka through the streets outside the hospital. The newly transformed creature's steps were heavy, each impact cracking asphalt. Reno's lungs burned, but he kept chasing.

"Kafka! You're still human! Don't give in!" he shouted, refusing to stop.

For a flicker, Kafka's monstrous eyes softened. He stumbled, clutching his head, torn between instincts and will.

From the rooftop, Akira watched the scene unfold. He had slipped past the flustered guards with ease, his figure now framed against the night sky.

[Ravan: Observation mode active. Kafka Hibino demonstrating unstable duality—human psyche vs kaiju physiology.]

Akira's gaze followed Reno's stubborn pursuit. "He's not running. Good. Reno's resolve might be the only thread holding Kafka together right now."

For a moment, he considered stepping in. Ending the struggle here would be simple. But something in him resisted.

"This is his battle," Akira whispered. "If I take it from him now, he'll never grow."

At Tachikawa Base, the tactical officer's voice cut across the comms.

"Target has fled hospital grounds. Pursue immediately!"

Hoshina clicked his blades together, eyes gleaming. "Looks like the real fun's about to begin."

The hunt had begun.

Kafka, lost in the chaos of his transformation. Reno, chasing after him with reckless loyalty. Kikoru, torn between her suspicion of Akira and her growing bond with him. Mina and Hoshina, closing the net tighter by the minute.

And Akira, standing above it all, watching the pieces shift into place.

[Ravan: Simulation paths diverge. Probability of Defense Force vs. Kafka confrontation: 92%. Recommendation: Prepare contingency.]

Akira exhaled softly. "Don't worry, Kafka. I'll make sure you survive this. One way or another."

The night deepened over Yokohama, its quiet broken only by the distant wail of alarms.

The story had truly begun.
