Chapter 32 - Kaiju No. 8 Makes Its Entrance

The control room at Tachikawa Base was a frenzy of activity, screens flickering with seismic readings and live reports from the city. Hoshina Soshiro stood at the center, his hand resting on the hilt of his twin blades, eyes narrowed as updates came in from Hatsuki Konomi.

"Commander, your approach was impulsive." Mina Ashiro's voice cut through the chatter, sharp and cool. Her arms folded across her chest as she fixed Soshiro with a piercing gaze. "If you hadn't ordered agents to pressure Akira, we might not have had this mess. The new kaiju could have been contained at the hospital before it bolted."

Soshiro bowed his head slightly, uncharacteristic humility lacing his voice. "My apologies, Captain. I take full responsibility. It was a misjudgment."

Despite the formality, unease lingered in his chest. He couldn't shake his suspicions about Akira. The boy was strong—unnaturally so. His records showed nothing extraordinary, yet the way he handled himself in battle made Soshiro's instincts scream caution. Parasitic kaiju, hosts hidden in plain sight… what if Akira was one of them?

Mina's gaze softened, though only slightly. "Don't worry. The CCG agents will arrive in a couple of days. They specialize in covert detection. If there's even a trace of kaiju within him, they'll find it. Until then, he stays under observation."

Her words were steady, decisive, but inside she knew the risk. She was intrigued by Akira's strength—enough to want him in her ranks—but if he turned out to be a kaiju infiltrator, her command of the Yokohama division would come under fire. She couldn't allow sentiment to cloud her judgment.

Before further debate could start, Konomi's voice rang across the comms.

"Report! Target kaiju detected leaving hospital grounds. Rapid movement toward Sector D. Wait—new reading! Another kaiju just appeared in Sector F! Classification: Level 4!"

The control room stiffened. Two signatures, simultaneous.

Mina didn't hesitate. "Split into two teams. Soshiro—you're on Sector F. I'll take the hospital trail myself."

"Yes, Captain." Hoshina drew a short breath, already turning toward the launch pads.

Tonight promised no respite.

Meanwhile, the streets of Yokohama trembled under the weight of chaos.

Reno Ichikawa's lungs burned as he sprinted, his heart hammering in disbelief at the figure running beside him. Kafka Hibino—his senpai, his friend—was no longer human.

The kaiju form lumbering next to him was massive, armored in jagged plates of gray, streaked with faint glowing blue lines. Its movements were raw and unsteady, as if the body itself was still learning what it could do.

"Senpai—your face—your whole body!" Reno gasped, keeping pace.

Kafka's massive head swiveled toward him, eyes wide with a mixture of panic and pleading. "I know, I know! Don't freak out—I didn't ask for this!"

[Ravan: Host Kafka Hibino. Human transformation compromised. Energy pattern: unstable hybridization. Risk level high.]

Akira had sensed it even before Reno dragged Kafka out of the hospital. From his position a block away, he'd seen the eruption of energy and the monstrous figure breaking through the walls. By the time he shouted, Reno was already too far to hear. Without wasting a second, Akira vaulted from the rooftop, keeping his distance but shadowing them carefully.

Kafka stumbled as his new body jolted with involuntary impulses. When a bird darted across their path, his clawed hand shot out instinctively, crushing it mid-flight. The remains sizzled against his palm.

"Could you at least try to act civil? We're in public!" Reno groaned, exasperated.

"I can't help it!" Kafka wailed. His voice, though distorted, carried the same pathetic whine. "This body just—does things on its own!"

"Yeah, well, it doesn't exactly come with a bathroom, senpai!" Reno snapped.

Kafka froze, panicking. "Wait… oh no. I really need to pee!"

Reno blinked in horror as strange liquid hissed out from a vent in Kafka's chest armor, steaming against the rain-slick street.

[Ravan: Host Kafka involuntarily releasing excess core fluid. Conclusion: inefficient waste system.]

Akira, perched unseen on a ledge above, pinched the bridge of his nose. "Unbelievable…"

The bizarre spectacle was cut short by a sound that froze them both.

A cry. A child's.

"Help! Somebody!"

Reno's head jerked toward the voice. Down the street, a little girl knelt beside a collapsed building, her small hands clawing at rubble. Beneath the debris, her mother was trapped, her face pale but still conscious.

"Run, sweetheart! Leave me!" the mother begged.

The child shook her head violently, tears streaming down her face. "No! Mommy!"

Kafka's monstrous body reacted before his human mind could process. His massive form blurred forward, crashing onto the scene. With a single heave, he ripped the debris aside, flinging stone and steel effortlessly.

"You're safe now," Kafka said gently, crouching to the girl's level. His wide, toothy maw attempted a smile.

The girl's eyes widened in terror. "M-m-monster!"

Her scream pierced the night.

Reno ran up, flustered. "Senpai! Maybe don't smile with all the fangs out!"

"I'm a good guy!" Kafka tried again, his grin growing wider in desperation.

The child screamed louder.

[Ravan: Attempted reassurance ineffective. Public relations score: catastrophic.]

Before anyone could recover, a guttural roar ripped through the street.

From the shadows of a side alley, a hulking parasitic kaiju lurched forward, its elongated limbs clattering against the pavement. Its hollow eyes fixed on Kafka, sensing both rivalry and prey.

It charged.

"Reno! Get them out of here!" Kafka barked.

"But—"

"Just go!" Blue light flickered through the seams of Kafka's armored body as he planted his feet.

Reno scooped up the girl and hauled her mother onto his back, teeth clenched as he sprinted away. His last glance over his shoulder seared into memory: Kafka, glowing like a beacon, facing down the charging kaiju.

The collision was cataclysmic. Kafka's fist, powered by the raw surge of his unstable kaiju core, smashed into the enemy's chest. The shockwave split the night with a crimson flash, the ground trembling beneath them.

Akira landed lightly on the opposite rooftop, watching intently.

[Ravan: Energy discharge consistent with kaiju-level strike. Kafka Hibino potential rating… rising.]

Rain began to fall, carried by the wind, but when droplets hit the battlefield they stained the ground a deep, unnatural red.

The city held its breath as Yokohama bore witness—for the first time—to the terrifying entrance of Kaiju No. 8.
