Chapter 9 - To Adventure! III

In my conversation with the guild receptionist, I left out any mention of the bloodsucker. I recall the stories from my old world, and they are not generous to bloodsuckers' victims.

Most stories hold that the victim will become an undying slave of the bloodsucker. They vary in how much autonomy the victim has; they may be mostly autonomous but unable to defy their master, or they may be completely under the control of their master, but unless their master is slain, they are always enslaved.

As a result, if these beings existed, their victims would be unable to seek any help. They would only be volunteering themselves for extermination.

Again, these stories are allegories and exaggerations, and this aspect likely speaks of how criminality can be contagious. Once someone is being extorted, they often try to pass their misfortune on to someone else, thereby becoming an extorter themselves. While this is a different world, until I know more, it's best not to say anything unnecessary.

I wash myself and complete my nighttime prayers. Sleep gently takes me away.

I open my eyes to see still water beneath, and a vivid sky above. A glowing figure stands ahead.

"Welcome again." It's the same entity as before. It said it would contact me again. "I saw your first adventure."

"And what did you think?" It can't be bringing this up without purpose. Definitely not the protocol entity.

"It is against protocol to provide information to you without purpose. But it looks like you won't need me to tell you." Was that a hint of playfulness?

"Why did you bring me here?"

"I need to tune your parameters a bit. This likely won't be the last time, either. Every reincarnated soul needs an initial tuning, but I've told you that your case is unusual. We have to monitor and periodically correct how we've mapped your characteristics to the mechanisms of this world." The entity hums as though it had begun to speak, then suddenly stopped. Several moments pass in silence. "All done. Try not to break our world's physics!" The entity hums rhythmically. Is that a laugh?

"I'll do what I can, Entity." I say while blinking, and when I open my eyes, it's morning.
