Chapter 6 - EPISODE 6

The first half of the match had been a showcase of supremacy, with Sunshine Stars asserting their dominance and leaving Ikorodu City FC trailing in their wake. The home team's performance was lackluster, their movements lethargic and disjointed, as if they were novices struggling to keep up with the visitors' rapid passes and intelligent plays.

In the stands, Ade and Olukoya exchanged heated words, their faces contorted with irritation.

"Didn't I tell you?" Olukoya whispered, his voice heavy with I-told-you-so condescension. "Kalu was never the right choice for this team."

Ade nodded in agreement, his eyes rolling dramatically. "It was inevitable. We all knew this season would be an uphill battle."

Olukoya released a deep sigh, his shoulders sagging in disappointment. "It's going to be a grueling season, man."

Ade's eyebrow arched, his lips quirking up in amusement. "You're not seriously considering following Ikorodu City FC's games this season, are you?"

Olukoya's jaw set with determination. "Why not? I'm a loyal fan."

Ade let out a snort of disbelief. "Good luck with that. I, for one, will be sparing myself the heartache of watching this subpar football for an entire season."

Olukoya managed a wry smile. "Fine then. I guess I'll need all the luck I can get."

The air in the locker room was thick with tension as Coach Kalu paced furiously, his face a mask of disappointment and frustration. "What was that debacle out on the field?" he demanded, his voice booming in the enclosed space. "That first-half performance was downright embarrassing! Is this how we plan to compete for titles this season?"

Tola, the left-winger, raised his voice in protest, his tone mirroring the coach's frustration. "Coach, we attackers are rendered helpless without possession!"

Coach Kalu's face flushed with anger, his eyes boring into Tola's. "Then win the ball back!" he thundered, his words hanging heavily in the air.

Tola, taken aback by the force of the coach's response, hesitated before asking, "How?"

Coach Kalu's expression shifted to one of disbelief. "I've taught you the high press technique, haven't I? And yet, you allowed the opponent to dictate the game," he chastised, shaking his head in disapproval. "And as for the defenders, what was that atrocious low line about? Didn't I explicitly instruct you to maintain a high line?"

Emmanuel, the captain and a defender, stepped in, attempting to clarify their actions. "Coach, our opponents were constantly slipping past us. We had to adjust to a low line to provide better support for Bolu in goal."

Coach Kalu remained unwavering in his stance. "I've already spoken with Bolu regarding dangerous one-on-one situations! Don't use that as an excuse for deviating from the game plan. I expect a vastly improved performance from all of you in the second half."

A chorus of "Yes, sir!" resounded through the locker room as the team refocused and steeled themselves for the challenge ahead, Coach Kalu's words lingering in their minds.

The players were met with a cacophony of noise and light as they stepped back onto the pitch for the second half, the intensity of the crowd's anticipation palpable in the air. With both teams poised for action, one question lingered heavily: Would Ikorodu City FC manage to turn the tide of the match, or would Sunshine Stars maintain their stranglehold on the game?

As the referee's whistle pierced through the atmosphere, the commentators and spectators couldn't help but take notice of the tactical adjustments made by Coach Kalu. "It appears Coach Kalu has altered his strategy," one commentator noted with intrigue. "Ikorodu City FC has implemented the high press approach, and their defensive line has been pushed higher up the field—a stark contrast to what we witnessed in the first half. It will be fascinating to see how this tactical shift plays out."

The game raged on, with Sunshine Stars relentlessly pushing forward. In a flash, Raymond Rocks found himself sprinting behind the defense, as Abiodun's pass soared over the defenders, setting up a one-on-one battle between Rocks and Bolu, who rushed out in an attempt to thwart the imminent shot. "It's a golden opportunity for Rocks to make it 3-0!" the commentator bellowed.

With Bolu bearing down on him, Rocks deftly squared up, dancing past the goalkeeper and calmly slotting the ball into the unguarded net.

"And it's a GOOOOAAAAAL! 3-0! Sunshine Stars extend their lead!" the commentator shouted, unable to contain his excitement. However, the celebration was cut short as the linesman waved his flag, signaling that Raymond Rocks was offside. "Oh, offside!" the commentator exclaimed with a hint of disappointment. "The goal won't count! How unfortunate."

Yusuf, his frustration mounting, blurted out, "Damn! This is demoralizing! How can we continue playing like this?"

Emmanuel, determined to stay focused, shot back, "We press on because this is what the coach expects of us. We can't give up now."

As the game resumed, Sunshine Stars continued their relentless assault on Ikorodu City FC's goal. However, their eagerness to capitalize on their dominance led to a series of offside calls, with Rocks' disallowed goal marking the fourth such instance within just five minutes of the second half.

Despite the pressure, Ikorodu City FC started to find their rhythm, creating chances of their own. Tola, receiving a well-timed long pass from Daniel, surged forward, deftly creating space between himself and the ball. Exploiting a momentary lapse in his marker's concentration, he burst past his opponent with lightning-quick speed. "Here comes Ikorodu City FC's first real chance of the game, as Tola outmaneuvers his marker!" the commentator cried out.

Tola swiftly cut back, laying off the ball to Andrew, the seasoned 31-year-old center forward who had been left unmarked on the edge of the box. Andrew unleashed a curling shot that had the goalkeeper rooted to the spot, the ball ricocheting off the crossbar and out of bounds. "Andrew takes aim! Oh, it's off the bar!" the commentator shouted, the palpable disappointment in his voice echoing throughout the stadium.

As the match continued to unfold, a quartet of Ikorodu City FC's young guns—Samuel, Daniel, Agogo, and Isaac Oru, all just 16 years old—readied themselves on the sidelines, eager to make an impact.

In a breathtaking turn of events, Rasaq, Sunshine Stars' fleet-footed winger, embarked on a mesmerizing solo run, cutting a swathe through the opposition's defense. Showcasing a dazzling blend of speed and skill, he weaved his way past Emeka, the team's right back, with apparent ease. Emmanuel, desperate to provide cover, was left flailing as Rasaq glided past him, the ball seemingly glued to his feet.

Yusuf, determined to thwart the attack, launched into a last-ditch tackle, but Rasaq proved too elusive, evading the challenge with consummate ease. Onyeka, sensing the danger, raced in to help, but Rasaq's trickery was too much for him as well, culminating in a ferocious shot that rippled the back of the net, with Bolu left clutching at thin air.

The commentator's voice crackled with excitement as he bellowed, "Rasaq takes on one, takes on two, takes on three, and it's a GOOOOAAAAAL! 3-0! What an astonishing individual effort! He single-handedly sliced through the defense and capped it off with a wonder strike!"

The entire stadium roared with delight as Rasaq and his teammates reveled in the exhilaration of the goal, their joy palpable and contagious. The Sunshine Stars players swarmed around Rasaq, showering him with praise for his moment of brilliance. The crowd, overcome with appreciation for the winger's display of skill, rose to their feet, cheering and whistling in a fervent ovation. Ikorodu City FC, on the other hand, appeared stunned, struggling to process the demoralizing blow they had just been dealt.

The game had taken a dramatic turn, with Sunshine Stars now firmly in the driver's seat. As the reality of the situation set in, Ikorodu City FC fans began to grow disheartened, some even leaving their seats in frustration.

"That's it, I've had enough! I'm out of here!" Agu declared, rising to his feet and making his way toward the exit.

"I'm right behind you," Esther chimed in, following closely.

As disappointment rippled through the crowd, more and more Ikorodu City FC fans began to file out of the stadium, leaving only a small number of loyal supporters to see the game through to its conclusion.

Back on the field, Coach Kalu made a bold tactical move, introducing four fresh faces to the game. Samuel took over from Andrew as the center forward, while Daniel replaced Paul as the right winger. In defense, Agogo partnered with Emmanuel, taking Yusuf's place, and 16-year-old Isaac Oru donned the coveted number 10 jersey, previously worn by Akilu, as he assumed Tola's role on the left wing.

Up in the stands, Ade and Olukoya couldn't contain their disapproval of Coach Kalu's decision. "So this is why Kalu axed Akilu, huh? To hand over the number 10 jersey to a kid? It's downright disrespectful!" Ade fumed.

"He's really starting to get on my nerves!" Olukoya agreed, his frustration evident in his voice.

The high press tactic employed by Ikorodu City FC began to bear fruit as the game resumed, but Isaac Oru's inexperience was evident as he nervously surrendered possession. Seizing the opportunity, Sunshine Stars' Rocks bore down on goal, only to be denied by a spectacular save from Bolu, resulting in a corner kick for the visitors.

Sensing Isaac's distress, Emmanuel approached him, placing a reassuring hand on his shoulder. "Isaac!" he called out.

"Y-yes, Captain," Isaac stammered, still reeling from his error.

"I've seen what you're capable of, Isaac. I believe in you, and I know you can do this. Just take a deep breath and calm your nerves," Emmanuel encouraged, his words steadying the young player.

Isaac nodded, taking a moment to compose himself. "Alright, Captain. I'm ready," he declared, newfound determination flashing in his eyes.

With a renewed sense of purpose, Ikorodu City FC's young players stepped up their press, unsettling their Sunshine Stars counterparts. The shift in momentum was not lost on Abiodun, who voiced his concern to his teammates. "What's happening out there? Ever since they made those substitutions, it's become increasingly difficult to move the ball around!"

As the clock ticked towards the 69th minute, Ikorodu City FC carved out a golden opportunity. Samuel, Onyeka, and Isaac combined to apply pressure on Awolowo, eventually forcing a turnover as Onyeka won possession. A quick pass to Ibrahim, who then found Isaac Oru, set the stage for a potential breakthrough.

"Oru whips in a dangerous cross, and it's Daniel! GOOOAAAAAL! Ikorodu City FC have pulled one back! It's now 3-1!" The commentator's ecstatic voice reverberated through the stadium, invigorating the remaining fans with newfound hope.

Coach Kalu, his fists clenched in anticipation, watched from the sidelines as his team fought their way back into the game. The goal had breathed life into Ikorodu City FC's pursuit of a comeback, and the momentum had undeniably shifted in their favor.

The Intensity of the game continued to escalate, and just ten minutes after Daniel's goal, Emmanuel found Ibrahim with a perfectly weighted pass. Ibrahim, in turn, redirected the ball to Isaac Oru, whose quick feet and dazzling skill left a trail of bewildered Sunshine Stars defenders in his wake.

The atmosphere in the stadium was electric as the commentator's voice boomed over the loudspeakers, narrating the action: "Just 11 minutes left on the clock, with Sunshine Stars holding on to a 2-goal lead, but Ikorodu City is showing no signs of relenting! Emmanuel finds Ibrahim, who lays it off for Oru! What an exhibition of skill on display! He dances past two defenders, sidesteps another three, and leaves a fourth and fifth player stumbling in his wake!"

Isaac Oru charged down the field, his vision laser-focused on Daniel's positioning. With an exquisitely timed and weighted through pass, Daniel received the ball and whipped in a pinpoint cross towards Samuel, who had found himself unmarked in the box.

The commentator's excitement reached new heights: "Daniel takes control of the ball and whips in a sublime cross! Samuel has the space, and… OH MY WORD! GOOOAAAAAL! It's now 3-2! Samuel's acrobatic bicycle kick was simply out of this world! But the big question on everyone's mind: who is this young phenom, Oru? He's shredded the Sunshine Stars' defense like paper! Five players left in his wake, and Ikorodu City FC is on the cusp of an incredible comeback!"

The remaining Ikorodu City fans in the stadium erupted into jubilant cheers, the scent of a miraculous turnaround in the air. On the pitch, Sunshine Stars' players exchanged concerned looks, keenly aware of the unstoppable momentum Ikorodu City had gathered behind them.

Coach Kalu, his eyes blazing with intensity, urged his players to maintain their focus and sustain the pressure on Sunshine Stars.

The match resumed with Ikorodu City FC maintaining possession, their hunger for an equalizing goal palpable. However, Sunshine Stars swiftly transitioned into a "park the bus" defensive strategy, determined to protect their lead. This approach, involving a large portion of the team dropping back to defend, presented a formidable challenge for Ikorodu City FC as they sought to penetrate the opposition's defense.

Coach Kalu, surveying the game from the sidelines, cursed under his breath. "Damn it. Park the bus – a tactic that makes it nearly impossible to break through the defense, but one I'd never resort to myself. It's far too dull." Indeed, Ikorodu City FC found themselves struggling to carve out any clear-cut opportunities as Sunshine Stars' defensive setup proved effective.

As the clock ticked into stoppage time, the assistant referee indicated one additional minute of play. "Can Ikorodu City FC find that elusive equalizer?" the commentator pondered aloud, hope mingling with uncertainty in his voice. In that fleeting moment, Isaac Oru received the ball, displaying great vision as he slipped a clever pass to Samuel on the edge of the box. Samuel held up the ball before deftly laying it off back to Isaac, who unleashed a curling effort that beat the despairing dive of Alampasu from the edge of the box.

The commentator's voice rose in excitement: "The 16-year-old prodigy Isaac Oru is on the ball once again! Oru slides a pass into the danger area. Samuel lays it off. Oruuuuuuuu! Oh, it's struck the woodwork! Agonizingly close." Alas, the ball cannoned off the post, and as soon as Alampasu cleared it away, the referee blew the final whistle, signaling the end of the match.

With the game concluding in a 3-2 victory for Sunshine Stars, players from both teams exchanged jerseys as a sign of mutual respect. Abiodun made his way towards Isaac Oru, offering to swap his number 10 jersey with the young talent. "Let's play again soon, Oru," he said, a glimmer of admiration in his eyes.

Isaac, overwhelmed by the gesture, managed a stammered response. "T-thanks."

As the players made their way back to the dressing room, the fans applauded both teams for delivering a thrilling spectacle on the pitch. Sunshine Stars' decision to implement a defensive strategy had ultimately paid dividends, securing their hard-fought victory over their fierce rivals, Ikorodu City FC.
