Chapter 7 - EPISODE 7

In the aftermath of the exhilarating preseason friendly between Ikorodu City FC and Sunshine Stars, Coach Kalu, the mastermind behind Ikorodu City FC's strategic gameplay, made his way into the press conference room. Journalists and camera crews eagerly awaited his arrival, their anticipation palpable as they prepared to glean insight into the coach's thoughts on the match.

Bolaji, the club's Public Relations Officer, extended a warm, professional smile as he ushered Coach Kalu towards the front of the room. The coach's presence commanded attention, his demeanor a blend of focus and poise that spoke volumes of his commitment to the sport.

Taking his position at the podium, Coach Kalu cleared his throat, his gaze sweeping across the sea of expectant faces. He began, "First and foremost, I would like to express my immense gratitude to both teams for putting on such a thrilling display of football today. It was a match that truly showcased the incredible talent and dedication present within Nigerian football."

The moment Coach Kalu concluded his address, Bolaji cleared his throat, and with a glance around the room, inquired, "Are there any questions for the Coach?"

A brief silence settled upon the journalists and camera crews as they contemplated their inquiries. Eventually, a reporter from the local sports daily, The Daily Pitch, raised her hand, catching Bolaji's attention. "Coach," she began, her tone inquisitive, "could you share your thoughts on the team's performance during the second half? You made some tactical changes, but the players appeared to struggle in capitalizing on their opportunities."

Coach Kalu leaned forward, his gaze surveying the room before offering his response. "Well, I believe we showcased some positive aspects in the second half, but ultimately, the consequences of our first-half errors proved costly. To compete at the highest level, we need to focus on improving our finishing and solidifying our defensive positioning."

The journalist nodded in agreement, jotting down a few notes before posing a follow-up question. "And what are your thoughts on the young players, particularly Isaac Oru? How do you envision their role in the team moving forward?"

A smile played at the corners of Coach Kalu's mouth as he spoke, pride evident in his voice. "Isaac Oru is undoubtedly a gifted young talent, and we're eager to witness his continued development. He possesses tremendous potential, and we anticipate even greater contributions from him to the team in the future. Additionally, we have other promising youngsters like Samuel, Daniel, and Agogo, who inspire great hope for the club's future."

Bolaji, ever the vigilant facilitator, scanned the room and inquired, "Are there any further questions for the Coach?"

Among the journalists present, Rose, a representative from the Intercontinental Planet, raised her hand, signaling her intent to pose a question.

With a gesture of acknowledgement, Bolaji invited her to speak. "Thank you, Bolaji. I'm Rose from the Intercontinental Planet," she began, her tone reflective of the seriousness of her inquiry. "Coach, today's game exposed some apparent weaknesses within the squad, which Sunshine Stars effectively exploited. With the new season on the horizon, do you remain confident about the team's prospects?"

Coach Kalu took a moment to consider her question before offering his response. "Yes, Rose. Thank you for that pertinent question. I am indeed confident, and my confidence stems from my belief in this team's potential. I truly believe we possess the necessary talent and tenacity to face any team in the world!"

Bolaji, observing the exchange, once again sought additional queries. "Any further questions?" he asked, his gaze sweeping across the room.

Rose, undeterred, raised her hand once more, determined to address another topic.

"Please proceed, Rose," Bolaji said, gesturing for her to continue.

"Coach," Rose began, her tone measured yet insistent, "it has been reported that you dismissed Akilu, a pivotal player for the team over the past decade. Today, we saw the talented young Isaac Oru sporting the iconic number 10 kit, which Akilu had worn for the past ten years. Rumors suggest that Akilu's dismissal was directly linked to Isaac inheriting the number 10 kit. Could you comment on these claims?"

Coach Kalu cleared his throat, his posture shifting slightly before he addressed the journalist's inquiry. "Well, Rose, let me clarify that Akilu's dismissal and Isaac's inheritance of the number 10 kit are entirely unrelated events. There is no connection between the two. Akilu's dismissal was a decision borne of necessity, with both the club and the player's best interests in mind. On the other hand, my decision to pass the number 10 kit on to Isaac was motivated by my desire to bolster the young player's confidence. He's a shy individual, so I hoped that bestowing the shirt upon him would inspire boldness, even if only incrementally. It had nothing to do with Akilu's dismissal."

As Coach Kalu concluded his response, Bolaji once again scanned the room for additional questions. "Are there any further inquiries?" he asked, his voice projecting a sense of finality.

No hands were raised in response, signifying the conclusion of the press conference.

"In the absence of further questions, I'd like to thank you all for your participation today, and I wish you a pleasant day," Bolaji announced, effectively wrapping up the conference.

With polite smiles and nods, Bolaji and Coach Kalu made their way towards the exit, acknowledging the gathered reporters as they departed.
