Chapter 12 - Higanbana

Shaking violently, Inezeya dragged himself slowly upright.

Water streamed from his hair, nose and mouth, flowing down his body. Wounds fully covered his hands and elbows. His breath came short. Emptiness and tiredness still filled his gaze. From exhaustion and pain he could barely stand.

The man advanced, and Inezeya followed with heavy steps, struggling with the chains.

Behind them, the waterfall's cliffs rose high into the sky. The dark sky was open and clear. Two full blood moons hung. The stars shone. Yellow and red auroras covered the sky. The surface was buried in snow.

The shore stretched uphill. When they reached its top…

A massive shrine carved into a colossal mountain loomed ahead in the horizon.

Up to its outer columns, all of its outer was hewn from the mountain. A wide canyon surrounded it. In the canyon ran a river. After it passed the mountain, it flowed down as a wide waterfall. Another waterfall at the back of the mountain was the core of the canyon's river.

A wide wooden bridge stretched across the canyon. They approached it. With his gaze at the ground, Inezeya followed the man with heavy and slow steps. The sounds of the chains echoed through his mind. Clean and fresh wind blew in his face toward his lungs.

With the first step on the bridge, it began to sway and bend downward. With heavy and slow steps they moved forward. Skeletons filled the river below. The bridge bent more with advancing.

A massive meteor shower burst across the sky. Inezeya watched the beautiful sky. Tears flowed from his eyes and soul…

"All I ever wanted in my life was peace… I strived, never gave up… Still I never could let it feel… Neither to myself or to those in need… Now my end has come near… Farewell world…"

He raised his hand in farewell toward the sky. The magnificent sky glowed between his fingers. After lowering his hand he advanced.

After crossing the bridge they made it to the shrine carved into the mountain. Passing its marvelous columns they entered inside. With a few steps inside, fire flared inside the holes of the walls, enlightening and warming the corridor. Both the shrine's inner and outer architecture was marvelously hewn.

With leaving the corridor behind, they walked through the hall. The hall was tremendously gigantic. Many gigantic columns carved as armored soldiers with their arms stretched upward resembled carrying the shrine. The bases of the columns and walls were surrounded by stones, with soil between them. On the soil rested withered plants and flowers. Among them red higanbana blossoms shone.

Its ceiling was an oval dome. It was carved resembling the sky. At its apex sat the sun slightly covered with clouds. The sun was made of slightly transparent yellow crystals, drawing its light from outside. The magnificent view shone in Inezeya's empty eyes.

After walking and walking, they reached the end of the hall. Two colossal staircases stretched before them. One staircase descended downward while the other rose upward from the sides and merged later.

A huge, muscled masculine statue with wings stood on the right side of the lower staircase, carrying the upper staircase with its back and arms. Its enormous wings arched through the upper staircase. Wavy carved hung its mid-long hair.

Inezeya trailed the man climbing the left staircase.

With passing every step, the coffin snagged against the ones below, forcing him to drag it with strained effort. He suppressed his voice screaming in pain. Sweat streamed dripping from his body.

After reaching the head of the winged masculine statue's head, he paused. With tired and weary eyes he gazed at its face. Raising his thumb to it, he smiled.

"I'm proud of you."

Tears fell from its white eyes made of stone.

Meanwhile the man had already reached the top of the staircase. Leaning forward against the stone fence, he gazed at the view with tired eyes.

After every painful and heavy step, Inezeya reached the top. There, the two staircases merged and stretched upward as one wide staircase.

Without resting, Inezeya walked heavily toward the staircase.

After seeing this, the man turned and followed Inezeya.

After passing the steps for a short while, the wide staircase showed no end. When Inezeya paused and slightly turned his tired body to glance back…

The stairs had stretched downward so much, making its beginning disappear…

"I-impossible… We just started climbing…"

Inside Inezeya's tired and exhausted eyes lay pain and no other choice than to continue. He turned forward again and pressed on in agony. The coffin stuck to the previous steps, still pressing heavily backward.

Before long, his body began to give way. His arms felt torn out of their sockets. Suppressing his voice in pain, he forced himself onward.

The walls on either side sharpened and lengthened everywhere, sprouting into huge spikes.

Blood began to flow down the staircase.

Each step became slippery from the blood. Its pressure made it difficult to climb. Inezeya's arms stretched more and more, tearing slightly. Still remained no other option than to continue.

From the ceiling descended thick strands of hair. These hairs were attached to a head bearing the face of a girl. Its whole body was covered in blood and wounds, exposing organs and bones. Blood dripped from the wounds. Its chest was torn open, revealing its whole ribcage. A heart entwined with veins pounded inside its center. Its heart was fused with two hearts. Both bore a face. One looked depressed, while the other laughed with a wide teethless grin.

Two arms surged out from the edges of the ceiling.

Her hands wandered along the staircase near Inezeya…

Following him from above…

"IneEzeYaAaAA!!!! IneeEZeyYaA!!!!"
