Chapter 39 - A Glimpse of the Future

Akainu, seething with rage, bit down hard and forced himself upright despite the pain burning through his right foot. His body melted into magma as he thrust out his left arm, hurling a massive punch of molten fire.

The magma twisted mid-flight into a savage hound, its jaws gaping wide as it lunged for Shiro, scorching black scars across the ground in its path.

Shiro clapped the air with both palms—Paw-Paw Cannon! The invisible force blasted the magma hound away. In the same instant, he warped behind Akainu, striking at his back with a devastating Shockwave.

But Akainu didn't even dodge. The blow tore half his body apart with a thunderous blast—only for the magma to reform seamlessly. That was the strength of a Logia: elemental bodies immune to ordinary attacks.

Shiro knew this well. Against a Logia, only Armament and Conqueror's Haki would work.

He roared, aura surging. The Tetanus Fang gleamed with a chilling glow as he wrapped it in Armament Haki and slashed at Akainu.

The blade howled through the air, tearing it apart.

Akainu hardened his fists in Haki and met the strike head-on. Metal rang against magma, sparks scattering as sword and fist clashed again and again.

Though not yet at his peak, Akainu had sharper Observation Haki than Shiro, plus the monstrous stamina of a Logia body. Blow for blow, he managed to hold his ground.

Magma fists hammered down like volcanic meteors. Shiro's blade answered with lethal arcs of steel. The shockwaves tore buildings apart, ripped trenches into the ground, and turned Fishman Island's port into a wasteland.

Both men were bloodied now. Shiro's clothes were soaked red, his body covered in cuts. Akainu's face bore deep sword wounds, magma leaking from them and painting the ground crimson.

Gritting his teeth, Shiro slapped his injuries away with the Paw-Paw Fruit and fed the damage into his sword spirit. The wounds sealed rapidly, his body restored.

"Tch… this could drag on forever. If only my Observation Haki was advanced… I could finish him in one strike!"

The thought flashed in Shiro's mind. Then, determination hardened in his eyes. He had no choice but to risk a breakthrough.

Another magma fist roared toward him, heat blasting like a furnace. Shiro closed his eyes, feeling the flow of the air, trying to sense.

At first, he took the blows directly—each strike a hammer that shook his body, forcing blood into his throat. But he clenched his jaw and endured, healing with the Paw-Paw Fruit again and again.

Slowly, his body began to move on instinct, dodging on its own.

Akainu saw him evading with eyes closed and sneered coldly. His arms erupted in magma, the air itself trembling with the heat.

A sudden, bone-deep dread stabbed into Shiro's chest. He snapped his eyes open.

They glowed scarlet.

"INUGAMI GUREN!"

Magma surged into snarling hounds, dozens of fiery jaws snapping toward him, melting the ground as they charged.

In the vision—Shiro was torn apart, killed instantly.

But then—he blinked. It hadn't happened. It was a glimpse of what would.

"So this is Observation Haki's 'Future Sight'...!"

A grin spread across his bloodied face. He swung.

"DIVINE DEPARTURE!"

The slash carved the air, wreathed in black and red lightning, too fast to follow with the eye. Akainu's magma hounds shattered into sparks before they could strike.

"You… you broke through?!"

For once, disbelief cracked Akainu's stern mask. This brat—only sixteen—and he'd awakened Future Sight in the middle of battle.

"Guess I owe you for that one, Red Dog." Shiro smirked, blade leveled at him.

"Damn kid…" Akainu's snarl was filled with fury and dread. "At sixteen, you already wield power this terrifying… If you live, you'll be a threat to the Navy and the World Government itself! I'll kill you here, even if it costs me my life!"

His body blazed as he unleashed his fiercest barrage—fists spewing magma like rain, engulfing Shiro in a storm of fire.

Anyone who'd seen Dragon Ball would recognize the desperation—Vegeta's "Prince's Barrage." When someone starts flailing like that, it means they're outmatched.

Sure enough, Shiro's new Future Sight guided him. Every punch was reflected with the Paw-Paw Fruit, the magma storm rebounding with explosive force. Akainu staggered as his own firepower detonated around him.

Breath ragged, chest heaving, he glared with unyielding hatred.

Shiro wrapped Advanced Armament around the Tetanus Fang and flickered forward. One slash ripped across Akainu's chest, crimson energy ripping inside him.

"AAARGH!"

Akainu screamed, blasted back dozens of meters, crashing into the ground. His cap spun away, his mouth spilling blood. Magma leaked from his wounds as he struggled to stand, face twisted in pain.

Shiro prepared to finish it—when suddenly, a golden shockwave engulfed the battlefield, shaking Fishman Island's port to its core.

From his duel with Roger, Sengoku had caught sight of Akainu's defeat. He saw also Chaton crumbling beneath Oden's dual swords, body scarred with wounds… Momousagi beaten black and blue by Bullet, her once-proud legs battered and bruised… Kizaru and Aokiji bloodied, uniforms in tatters.

The Navy was breaking. If the fight continued, they would be crushed.

Sengoku's eyes narrowed with frustration and bitter resignation.

"Roger… give me this much, at least. Let's end it here. I'll withdraw my men from Fishman Island."
