Then, something strange happened to Leavis, a bright white light flooded his consciousness abruptly then begun to take the form of a medieval small town, he found himself in a cramped up dim alley with tall buildings to the side as well as hang-lines running from window seal to widow seal, down below were heaps of revolting garbage, and a busty crowd behind, a malnourished, sickly girl bumped through him 'the actual hell! watch were your... she just passed through me!'
he frowned as he observed her, shivering and cradling something to her side, 'is that a baby?' he was in his youthful guise and trotted till he could observe her clearly, she squatted in her tight expensive red dress and anxiously dug into the heap of garbage "you'll be safe here you curse!" she panted whispering to the healthy baby wrapped in a white tunic. 'the hell would you trash your child!'
she glared at the sleeping child and disgustedly announced 'you'll only be a hinderance to my work, so into the small pit "she tossed the child into a small pit, anxiously peered over her shoulder and man in a grand brown suite and top hat with a walking cane reeled in almost un heard "Whores don't get days off!" he swung his cane and struck her back this was a procurer, one who manages whores and by the looks a brutal one. 'so she's a whore?'
she moaned in pain as he continuously stuck her, 'OI! that's enough!' Leavis tried to step in-between them, but was like a ghost, unseen and untouchable 'so all I can do is observe!... shit!!' he stepped back and unwillingly observed as she buried the child with every blow she received, the man moved closer and pulled her long silky red hair, exposing a rough beauty, mixed with sweat and tears "come here! we'll discipline you adequately jus you wait!" and she screamed into the bewildered passersby.
'the witch jus left a bloody child here!' he thought of calling out, 'but It's no use, they can't see me' he turned anxiously to the moving ground and squatted, digging through the trash but unable to do a thing 'So this is how monsters are made! damn it's so helpless... will it survive?' he thought, perplexed by the entire situation, then a shabby, thin man in tattered clothes walks in after what seemed like thirty minutes, 'Ah! the child won't perish!' Leavis stood in the shadows against the left wall, observing.
The man looked to be a beggar, his eyes filled with desperation and despair, he squatted and studied the garbage, looking for his next meal perhaps 'been there... done that, jus a little to your left and you could save a life', the man's bony fingers searched every place but where the child was, he even stomped it but didn't realize 'shit! desperation sure does blind a man!' Leavis cursed from his corner enraged. soon the man left as he came only growing hungrier.
Leavis looked on bitterly as he helplessly watched the child cry and moan, glancing around, he awaited someone 'Just how bad is this kid's luck??' no one showed, heck no one even glanced into the alley, then time begun to move faster, the sun rose and set thrice 'the hell!' and no one showed, the weather changed from shine to heavy storms, the child stayed put cried, the only thing that changed was that the garbage covering it was washed away 'oh! sweet lord!' Leavis felt nauseous on observing.
The garbage moved exposing a worm and maggot infested face, worms swimming in the child's now muddy tunic as it twitched uncomfortably, and cried helplessly 'oh lord why!... why did I!... have to witness this!' he felt his stomach twist, and he threw up on the muddy floor. For days it cried until the time resumed its normal flow, but the damage had been done, the child shivered, gasping for air in it's hoarse voice, which had grown too weak so it just quietly watched.
it was a cold morning, fog was still up, Leavis had been watching frightfully, the sun had just begun to rise and the same man from before found the child 'please take the baby!' , shivering with red eyes and hollow black holes all over it's skin, some bursting with worms, his face grew grave, he scattered to the baby, picked it up and run, Leavis followed him into the busy morning streets 'have to make sure it's safe', as the man bumped into people, the first thing they glared and detested was the child he held carelessly, Leavis used that to trace him.
The man stopped at a market, Leavis followed, a slave market. before him at a distance was a wooden platform and before it stood a fit sturdy soldier in ancient armor, clenching in his right hand, a long spear with wooden rode. 'this unbelievable idiot!' Leavis thought as he crept behind, All around were men leashing slaves, blood stains on the rock paved pathway, screams of despair and the jingling of coin purses, the man nervously approached the soldier who instinctively turned his head and locked eyes with his, the man froze in his tracks, shivered so bad he dropped the child *thud!* then awkwardly picked it up. 'he's selling the child!' 'what a messed up shit head!'
"What is it that you want! do you wish to join them?" the soldier commanded confidently, pointing to the slaves. "N-no.. I-I-I I brought a-a new!" he smiled awkwardly, raised and pointed to the child, his fingers shaky. The child didn't shake, not even flinch, "It's dead!" the soldier pronounced and disinterestedly looked away "No! I-It's just playing!" "Then prove it!". Leavis watched attentively.
ram 'now you've done it! you killed it!', the man slammed the child against the floor and smiled wearily at the soldier who glared at him and in a cold tone commanded "Now step on it till it cries" 'and here I was thinking this man was decent' "but..." "do it or leave.." the man sighed and begun to stomp the baby mercilessly, all attention was drawn to him and chants of disapproval and disgust filled the streets, till it coughed up slimy worms "Halt! I've seen enough, I'll buy it" he picked a pouch from his right and tossed it to the man who greedily grasped it and was on his way.
'Jus great! it's now in the hands--of a freakin slave patrol!' Leavis crept closer to the man's figure as he observed the baby with growing disgust "revolting!" he let the child drop to the ground *thud* Leavis flinched a little 'oof! that must hurt' the little one just remained their, gulping air and still. watching everything as though it felt no pain, it shed no tears 'but who is this child?' Leavis pondered.
Then time moved forward fast again... Leavis saw them bath the baby in clothes and bed linen in hot soapy water until it healed, but as soon as it turned seven, the lady in charge of it decided to name it "I think Leavis Habirus has a nice ring to it!" 'that little shit... is me??' he was taken aback "Leavis means -- unwanted filth that just happened to survive--" 'wow! how literal!' "oh! and Habirus means-- like a snake--" her tone cold and condescending. Time resumed it's normal flow the youth Leavis standing behind her, the fat chubby old nun rose from her insufficient stool and smacked Leavis' skull scornfully "I just wish you died that day!" she spat on him and as she was heading away slipped on soap, rose awkwardly and resumed out the wooden door.
Leavis watched in amazement 'there's plenty of room in hell for people like you.. and I... but you might finish it all up!' he observed the innocent him of old, drenched long white hair covering his face and ember irises, he sat on the floor in front of the stool wiping tears from his face, dressed in a thin fabric suite, today is the auction, where different houses or alike come to bargain slaves like Leavis.
The fat nun returned and cast a glare at him for a moment "Get your useless ass over here!" she commanded him, he scattered to his feat and to the door, she snatched him by the ear and pulled him through the luxurious long hallway and then they stood before a huge door, she turned and glared at Leavis who fixed his gaze on the door, his eyes slightly teary. Leavis had lost his voice from a young age and this became a challenge as well as a cause of isolation and bullying. the youth Leavis caught up with them and observed ' how come I don't remember this?'
the fat nun stood before him, bent a little and fixed his buttons, then slapped him "Get your act together! if you come back with me, I'll skin you and feed you to the others" she then opened the door, Leavis stood aloof, a red hand print forming on his right cheek and he followed her in.
it was a spacious room, lit by chandeliers aligned vertically, a two floored room filled with red chairs, almost like a theater, a thick red carpet running from corner, before all the seats was a grand stage with red curtains shrouding its contents. the room was rich in art and designs were displayed elegantly along pillars and stair cases, polite men and women dressed in suites run around the hall, addressing different slave masters.
a slim mysterious man approached the Nun at the entrance "Hello Madame!" his French accent impeccable "how may we be of service to you!", she responded shrewdly " take it away" and as if shooing gestured to Leavis, the youth Leavis watched, his expression growling with rage ' the sorrow of powerlessness' he clenched his fist tight and followed the man who led Leavis behind the curtains via a set of short wooden stairs, on reaching, the polite looking man muttered "Worthless scum!" and thrust his foot into Leavis' back, sending him into the steel cage that lay against a polished wooden floor, the man grinned, shut and locked the cage, pocketed the keys and retreated. Leavis watched him.
the youth Leavis stood by himself 'Guess I've always been unlucky' feeling sorrow grip him by the throat, then the curtains were pulled to the side, revealing about a hundred nobles and alike all looking greedily at Leavis, Then a blinding light set was directed at Leavis' face, causing him to squint, he observed a fit man's silhouette step before the light, casting a shadow in which the cave was immersed.
he begun to address them confidently and courageously "Welcome fair nobles to this week's slave auction!..." the crowd cheered, then the man turned slightly to Leavis "As you can see, we only have one slave tonight!... who shall take the prize!" the cheering died down "This boy comes from the house of the sister Lulunica" the pointed to one of the seats, and a light shone on an oversized ogre as she was caught diligently picking her nose, startled and embarrassed she stood conjured a fake smile, waved and bowed, then awkwardly took her seat.
"Place your bids! and may the highest bidder... win!"
A confident and cunning soft voice announced " 10billion" "any bidders offering higher than Madame Fraches spider-Lilly?. going once!... going twice... going...." a hoarse frail voice shouted out "25billion" 'What are these guys! dense?? am I worth that much?' Miss Fraches chanted "30 billion!" the bidding escalated, other background voices shouting out "35 billion!" "49billion!" "55billion". then the crowd fell silent, everyone staring at the other, arguing, the man at the stage was thrilled, then Miss Fraches delivered the final blow "200 billion!" Lulunica's mouth dropped ajar and drool oozed out, no she wasn't surprised, she was a sleep. '200 billion! damn... must be nice to be rich!'
"200 billion going once!" no objections, "going twice!" still nothing "Sold!" he announced swaying a flag amid air. Then the curtains were sealed again, drenching Leavis senior and junior in a faint darkness. then the sound of heels clacking against the floor was heard approaching the cage. 'Shit! not her!'
