Chapter 12 - Chapter 12: Like a Moth to a Flame

Sarah Sutton felt that there was something a bit strange about both of their states.

But she couldn't quite put her finger on what was strange.

Maeve Lane raised her eyes, "What's up?"

Julian Fairchild didn't say anything and got into the car.

Sarah Sutton nudged Maeve Lane, "What are you standing there for? President Fairchild might have finally thought of you and wants to arrange a role for you. Don't miss out on a good opportunity."

Maeve Lane wouldn't tell her that Julian Fairchild wasn't idle enough for things like this.

But she couldn't completely ignore her... creditor.

Julian Fairchild drove while Maeve Lane got into the back seat of the car.

As soon as she settled in, the car suddenly sped off.

Julian Fairchild looked gloomy, "You can't join this group."

Maeve Lane was slightly stunned, her black and white eyes looking at him, "Why?"

Julian Fairchild glanced at the faintly visible bandage on her head, speaking in a stiff tone, "No means no."

Maeve Lane was silent for a long time, her eyelids drooping, revealing no emotion.

Julian Fairchild slowed down the car.

After a long while.

Maeve Lane finally spoke, "Give me a reason."

The man's voice was magnetic, "I don't like it."

He had just asked the doctor and learned that Maeve Lane's injury meant she couldn't get wet or make large movements, yet the role she'd taken had too many fight scenes.

But this time, Maeve Lane uncharacteristically refused, "I want to do it."

Julian Fairchild subconsciously frowned. In these two years, Maeve Lane had never refused any of his requests.

Whether they were reasonable or not.

So much so that he often had the illusion that she was compensating him.

But how could that be? Maeve Lane was a woman without a heart.

As soon as she sensed he had feelings for her, she'd definitely walk away.

He knew her too well.

Maeve Lane was determined to act.

Having wasted so much time now, she was unwilling to let Anson Lane and Sylvia Lane succeed.

There was no more sound in the car.

Maeve Lane looked out at the river view, her eyes a bit unfocused.

Aurelia University was also by the river.

That was the alma mater of both her and Julian Fairchild.

...

The summer after graduating high school, Maeve Lane had just turned 18.

The elder of the Fairchild Family sent his butler to the Lane Family to discuss engagement matters.

This should have been a happy event, but the next day, she was found drunk and unconscious in a hotel bed.

Wearing a loosely tied robe, almost falling off with a pull, her neck exposed outside the blanket was covered with kiss marks.

Anson Lane brought people to the bedside, completely altering his usual kind father demeanor, and slapped her hard in front of everyone.

Maeve Lane would never forget that day.

The butler from the Fairchild Family left, shaking his head in disappointment.

Only her mother held Maeve Lane and cried, blaming herself, "I'm sorry, it's my fault. I know you wouldn't do such a thing. Don't be afraid..."

Maeve Lane could still laugh, comforting her in return, "It's okay."

But from then on, as if trying to forget something, Maeve Lane changed one boyfriend after another.

By the time she reported to Aurelia University, Maeve Lane's reputation had already spread throughout the upper circles.

There were also many there attending Aurelia University, and it wouldn't be an exaggeration to say as soon as Maeve Lane entered the university, she captured the attention of all the men.

Whether they had heard of her or not, after seeing Maeve Lane once, they all developed some feelings.

It was the unconscious desire to conquer a beautiful woman that all men felt.

Maeve Lane's appearance was indeed too striking.

Maeve Lane changed her boyfriends quickly too, switching several in a month.

Yet they still flocked to her eagerly.

Maeve Lane's affection, even if the men knew it was fleeting, still made them rush towards it like moth to a flame.

But one day, her name suddenly appeared alongside the name of the student council president, known for being the coldest and most abstinent in the school, on the announcement board.
