Chapter 4 - The NPCs in the village

Looking at the game time displayed in the upper left corner of the sky, I reached level 10 after seven hours.

During this period, I roughly mastered the calculation of "special growth" in the game. This calculation formula is basically determined by the comparison of the strength of the monsters and the player's strength. The stronger the monster, the weaker the player, and the higher the reward for upgrading. For example, if I kill a monster with high agility, my agility will also be higher.

On the other hand, during this upgrade process, the degree of effort made by the player will also be detected by the computer. The more difficult the battle, the more point bonuses will be obtained; at the same time, the system will also judge the player's intelligence and concentration level in the battle, and give some bonuses in terms of mental strength. So although many wild beasts have very low mental strength, the one I killed after this gained the most in terms of mental strength.

Now my combat skills have greatly improved. This is thanks to the abundant experience I gained in previous games. Basically, in terms of fighting skills, I am number one in all games. If not limited by my innate attributes, I would do even better.

However, in a short period of time, merely improving skills cannot help me shorten the time to kill monsters anymore. As the monster level increases by one, its strength increases significantly. The 15th level monster I am currently trying to kill is already at the limit. The 16th level monster I simply cannot break through the defense, and my health is only enough for them to attack twice. If using traps, one is that digging traps takes too long, and the other is that lowering the difficulty is not beneficial to my growth.

In the past games, when this situation occurred, I usually paused my level advancement, earned enough money to collect sufficient equipment, and then brought enough red potions. As the saying goes, "preparing the knife to cut wood." But now this poor village simply cannot get good equipment, and the monsters have not given me anything to drop yet. What can I do?

At the same time, currently my MP is much slower to increase than my HP. Obviously, this is because I lack magic skills. I don't know where to learn magic in this game.

Actually, it's because this village is too poor. Other players, if they are relatively wealthy in reality, the game will arrange for them to be born in a city or a developed village. There are NPC characters and skill books for selling various skills. Their growth will be much easier than others.

And I remember that in the game, relatives can be set. Those children from wealthy families will have more advantages. Even if their parents do not play the game, they can register a character. These rich people will enter the game with at least several hundred copper coins. After giving it to their son, what a huge effect it will have in the early stage!

Moreover, as long as you reach level 20, you can exchange world coins and game coins. Rich people can buy the best equipment at any time. This is not something that ordinary players can compare with.

I don't know why this game transplants the social wealth gap to the game. This should be very unfair. Unless this game has an absolute advantage in technology and art design compared to other games, making players reluctant to switch games, or the boss simply doesn't understand, otherwise, it is impossible to do this.

Of course, from the perspective of the game company's profit, poor people who play the game will not invest much money to exchange game coins. Instead, they will exchange game coins for RMB. Therefore, they are not welcome by the game company. It is normal to set difficulty for this group of people. Society is like this. Rich people are always welcome wherever they go.

Back to the village, the village chief gave me a 10th-level task: "Kill 20 tigers." I gave a苦笑. I had investigated the level of the tigers before. It was level 18. Without a doubt, I couldn't break through the defense now. I couldn't kill them.

Speaking of this task, if it were a player with good innate attributes or good equipment, doing it at level 10 would not be very difficult. Unfortunately, I was born as a top-notch loser. Although I worked very hard in the future, the point bonuses I received were only equivalent to the upper level of ordinary players. They were not outstanding. Only once, the total four attribute bonuses added up to 11 points. I was just about to go out when the village head stopped me and said, "Young man, since you have eliminated a large number of wild beasts for our village, I would like to ask you to serve as the 'village guard'. How about that?"

I couldn't help but be overjoyed. This was something new. In the old games, there were always village guards who stood at the village entrance with big swords and would kill monsters with one slash if they saw them. Was this the job? I knew that when I first played the game, these village guards were my idols.

I asked eagerly, "What does the village guard do? Is it just to stand guard for the village and not be able to move freely?"

"No, besides trying to eliminate wild beasts entering the village area, you can move freely. The monsters you kill in the village will be paid according to their level and quantity, and your contribution to the village will be recorded. Besides, if there are players fighting in the village and harming NPCs, you also have the responsibility to stop them."

I laughed. This job was pretty good. Killing monsters and getting paid was great. Being the "royal employee" was also very prestigious. But if there were high-level players fighting, I would only die for duty.

"Then what kind of equipment can I get?" "Well, our village is very poor. The former 'village guards' left when they left, and they took their equipment with them. I only have a rusty iron sword for you. There is also a 'village guard' badge and an attribute sheet of our village here."

The iron sword was covered with rust. After I went out to sharpen it, I checked its attributes. Attack +7, which was already quite good. Maybe I could break through the defense of level 16 monsters.

The village guard badge was made of wood and had an increase of +1 in burst force. However, my current burst force of 2 had rarely had burst attacks and fatal attacks. Maybe my hidden attribute "luck" was quite low.

Speaking of hidden attributes, my luck might really be very low. After all, I have never obtained any equipment. But I know that I have an excellent hidden attribute "intuition". Maybe it's because my sensitivity to five senses is low, and the system, out of balance considerations, gave me the highest "intuition", which is also the sixth sense. This is quite in line with real life. When a certain sense is lost, the other senses will take on greater responsibilities. Like in real life, blind people have generally more sensitive ears.

The super "intuition" gave me the ability like "inquiry skills". As long as I observe the monsters and NPCs carefully, I might be able to reveal some basic attributes of them, such as their level. I can also see their attack and health attributes for low-level monsters. If there are monsters with a level 10 higher than me around, the system will also alert me.

The village's attribute sheet, which I didn't have in the previous games I played, shows the village's attributes: The Village of Desolation, population 7 (traders are considered mobile population and are not counted), strength 4, culture 2, magic 1, economy 1, security 1, production 1, environment 1. The comprehensive strength ranking of the village is 103,988,53. It seems that there are a million villages in the game.

After carefully considering what the village head said just now, I thought his intelligence was quite high, and his favorability towards me seemed to have increased a lot. I decided to go and inquire about some more information. So I went back to him to ask about skills and magic.

The village head told me that due to the decline of the village, the villagers have left, and all kinds of occupations have left. Now the remaining people are family members of villager A and village woman A, along with child A. Their occupation is farmer, and they only know "planting skills" and "breeding skills"; the cool NPC Abao has a profession as a hunter and should have many skills. His wife Abe can only do the most basic "sewing skills".

The village head is a mage, but he told me that you can only learn magic from him at level 15. Also, because there has been no one buying magic potions for a long time, the vendors in the village have not brought magic potions to sell. Even if you learn magic, it won't be very useful now.

The village head also told me that the village can be developed. If all the villagers work together, the village's attributes will increase, and some vagrants and people from more backward villages will move in (currently, there are no more backward villages around us). Additionally, if the village's magic level reaches 10, the teleportation array can be restored, allowing one to directly travel to the nearest village. If one travels by foot alone, it would take more than three days to reach the nearest village, and there would also be many dangerous wild beasts on the way.

I left the village chief's house and decided to have another chat with the other villagers.

The intelligence of the family of villager A was obviously very low. Besides, I had no interest in farming techniques or animal husbandry. After a while of questioning, I found no new information and gave up.

The couple Abao were named NPCs, and their intelligence was obviously different. So I focused all my efforts on them.

Although Brother Abao was still rather cold and didn't pay much attention to me, but since I was already in the "village guard" role, helping the village kill monsters also gained some recognition from everyone. Therefore, I learned about Abao from the kind Abai.

Abao was indeed a hunter by profession. There were many wild beasts around this village, which was very suitable for him. Therefore, he didn't move away like other villagers. However, a few days ago, while hunting, he encountered a wolf king. In a panic, he threw all his weapons, including bows and arrows, onto the grassland. There was no blacksmith in the village, and Abao lost his weapons and couldn't hunt. He could only wait for the next time a peddler from the city brought weapons back for him. However, that would take ten days.

I found that Abai was quite easy to talk to, so I took out the latest obtained animal skins and asked her if she could help me make something. Of course, I paid for it.

Abai was very happy. After all, it had been a long time since someone asked her to make clothes. She quickly found out the rusty needles and sharpened them.

However, this lady's craftsmanship was really not good. She ruined dozens of animal skins, worth more than 100 copper coins (in fact, "sewing and mending skills" require finished leather and fabric, and the processing of animal skins into leather should be done by a leatherworker). Finally, Abai helped me make a set of armor: 2-defense leather pants, 2-defense 1 leather gauntlets, 1-defense 1 fox fur hat, and 1-sensitivity 1 wolf fur boots.

After putting on this set of equipment, although the defense was somewhat higher, it was also too heavy and didn't fit well, which actually reduced my agility. It seems that to get good equipment, one needs to find a skilled leatherworker and use high-quality materials.

On the surface, I still pretended to be quite satisfied and praised Abai's craftsmanship. I paid her 200 copper coins. Abai actually accepted it. It seems that her intelligence wasn't very high. She should be ashamed or humble for giving me so much material loss. It's not right to not accept the money.

I tentatively asked if I could learn her skills. Unexpectedly, she agreed. How could she not know that this would cause her to lose an important customer? Ah, computer intelligence is indeed not as good at calculating as humans.

Finally, I learned my first skill: "sewing and mending skills", which is currently at the first level. I couldn't wait to experiment with the remaining animal skins on my own. All of them failed, except that my skill experience increased by 2%.

It seems that to practice life skills, it's not just about having high intelligence and creativity. One needs to practice hard to achieve success. Material consumption is also inevitable. I wonder if it's worth it. The material cost lost is enough for me to buy more advanced equipment in the future. I'll put aside the life skills for now.

After having another conversation with Abao, I repeatedly mentioned keywords such as "hunter skills", "weapons", "bows and arrows", "wolf king", etc. Finally, heaven rewarded my hard work. Abao was defeated by me and said suggestive words like "I really want to get my lost weapons back". I immediately proposed that if he showed me the way, I would help him find his weapons. Abao reluctantly agreed.

I spent half an hour making a wooden bow for Abao. Since I didn't have the leatherworker skill, the wooden bow still had an attack of 1 point. As for the arrows, Abao still had many. I also lent him the copper sword I had eliminated. Then we set off together.

After more than three hours of walking, we arrived at a small grassland. From a distance, there was no sign of any monster on this small grassland. This was quite a strange phenomenon. There are rarely such vast and empty areas in the wild. Logically speaking, where the wolf king appeared, there should have been a pack of wolves as well.

Abao's memory did not disappoint me. We soon found the location of the lost weapon. From a distance, the iron bow and the bronze scythe were both there. Great!

Just as we were rejoicing over the smoothness of our actions, a strong wind blew, and a huge silver wolf appeared. The wolf king!
