Chapter 49 - Silent Exit

The door creaked open, and a figure emerged — cloaked in shadow, presence heavy, undeniable. The air thickened, like the room itself recognized who had arrived.

Hunter's breath caught. "No… it can't be."

Scar turned toward the doorway, and for the first time, his confidence cracked. His eyes widened — not in fear, but something close. Surprise… and shame.

The figure stepped forward — slow, deliberate — each footfall like a verdict.

Jake's aura stilled. The primal storm inside him paused, sensing something heavier.

Hunter backed up a step, voice barely audible. "He wasn't supposed to be here…"

Scar's claws eased back. His stance faltered. The fury that had lit his face moments ago faded, replaced by something strange—regret… or was it relief?

"Father…" he said. Barely a whisper. Not defiance. Not resistance.

The Alpha's eyes swept the room slowly, calmly — first to Sarah, crumpled and bloodied on the floor… then to David, motionless.

No flicker of fear. No surprise.

Just cold understanding.

Then his gaze lifted — and locked with Jake's.

He said nothing. Didn't need to. The silence between them said enough.

Jake's muscles tensed. Instinct screamed at him — grab the injured and run. Get Sarah. Get David. Get out.

But something else pulled at him — heavier, deeper.

Stand your ground. Face him.

His claws twitched at his sides. The energy in his body begged for release. Fight or flee. Protect or destroy.

His breath caught.

This wasn't just another threat.

This was a decision.

And the wrong move could end everything.

The Alpha stepped forward, eyes fixed on Sarah.

He knelt beside her, reaching out—

SWOOSH.

In an instant, Jake was gone from his spot and reappeared across the room — Sarah cradled in his arms.

No sound. No warning.

Just motion and distance.

The Alpha froze, his hand still in the air where she'd been.

His eyes lifted, meeting Jake's — not angry, not surprised.

Just… noting.

Jake's stance was rigid, protective. Breath steady. Muscles tense.

The message was clear:

Don't touch her.

The Alpha straightened, rising slowly from where he'd crouched.

His gaze shifted sideways — to David, still and pale on the floor.

Then, without a word, he looked back at Jake.

Not with malice. Not even judgment.

Just… expectation.

Like the silence itself was asking: "Aren't you going to take him too?"

Jake's jaw tightened. His grip on Sarah adjusted instinctively, protectively. His eyes stung, but he didn't look at David again. He couldn't.

There was nothing left to save.

Only to protect what still remained

His instincts screamed. Move.

Now.

Jake took a step back, Sarah in his arms, her blood soaking into his chest.

The Alpha didn't follow.

He simply stood there, in the center of the wreckage — still, composed, unreadable.

Scar groaned somewhere in the background. Hunter remained frozen, silent.

The house, torn and bleeding like everyone inside it, creaked under the weight of what had just happened… and what was still to come.

Jake met the man's eyes one last time.

No words.

Then — without warning — he jumped, crashing through the broken ceiling, landing on the roof above.

The wind caught him, cold and sharp against the heat of blood.

He didn't look back.
