[Ruby's House]
"Kai...what are you doing here?"
Ruby froze on the last stair, her eyes widening in shock.
"I came to check on you," Kai said warmly, stepping toward her. "Didn't you get my message?"
"Message?" She repeated numbly, recalling she hadn't bothered to check her second phone ever since she received the parcel at the office.
For one terrifying heartbeat, she was certain he could see straight through her trench coat as she lowered her gaze, her hands unconsciously tugging the lapels of her black leather trench coat closer.
"What message are you talking about?" She managed to swallow the tremor in her voice as she spoke more confidently.
"I texted you around 4:00 PM today. I told you I'd stop by on my way home." His eyes lingered on her flushed face a little before travelling down her frame. "But it looks like you're heading out?"
Ruby's throat tightened.
"Y–yes. Just… going out with Elena to a friend's h.....house warming party."
