Chapter 91: Magic of Cutting Connections
Elf Village
After a couple of months of recovery, Kurtz and his group had mostly healed. Kurtz had been the most seriously injured, followed by Norn and Somo, while Serie suffered from magic depletion. Only Eric was barely hurt.
With Olivia's healing magic, the others recovered quickly, though Kurtz still had hidden injuries. The ache in his bones reminded him of draining all his magic to fight God Strike and the gods.
During this time, Serie's attitude towards Olivia had become normal, as she no longer acted like a guard dog and was treated as a partner, just like the others.
It was strange, and Kurtz didn't understand, or didn't dare admit it. Even though they were all companions, Serie's attitude towards him was different.
Was he her most important companion, or was something else there?
Kurtz didn't dare think deeply, fearing it was his imagination. Before finding immortality, he would keep his feelings buried.
Kurtz stood in an open space near the village, holding an ordinary longsword while sacred runes were carved into the blade, runes he had decoded from the original text. He was testing the magic he had just created.
Olivia and Serie stood beside him, focused.
"Are you ready?" Kurtz asked quietly.
Olivia nodded, clasped her hands, and closed her eyes while her breathing steadied.
Serie released a magic wolf wrapped in vines, its limbs tangled to prevent movement while the creature snarled, eyes gleaming with malice.
Then Olivia began to pray as her wings glowed silver. Faith flowed along the connection between her and Kurtz, guided into the longsword.
This was Kurtz's theory: normal living bodies couldn't withstand faith power, but what about inorganic matter?
The initial experiment worked since the longsword, with special runes, held Olivia's faith power. But side effects were obvious.
Cracks spread across the longsword like it could shatter at any moment.
Kurtz didn't hesitate as he sensed the power flow within the sword. Unlike chaotic magic, faith power was gentler yet more profound, something ordinary creatures couldn't comprehend or bear.
He raised the sword while the runes on the cracked blade lit up, forming a silver-white light.
Kurtz swung fiercely, and sword energy struck the bound monster.
"Roar, !"
The monster howled as it was cleaved in half, clearly dead.
Normally, dead monsters contaminate land with their blood, and their corpses are highly poisonous. How to dispose of monster corpses was a problem for all races.
However, after the magic wolf died, no black blood flowed from its wound. Instead, dark magic power overflowed, dissipating like smoke.
Then something amazing happened.
The monster's body began to disintegrate as everything vaporized into grayish-white dust that dispersed in the wind.
No stench, no remains, not even a trace of magic, as if it never existed.
"It worked!" Eric waved excitedly but hit Norn, who immediately punched him back with a scowl.
Serie stepped forward and squatted down, observing where the monster had disappeared while her eyes widened slightly. "Incredible. Even the soul completely dissipated. Your magic doesn't just kill monsters, it completely severs their connection to the false gods."
The true gods created the Skywing Clan, continuously obtaining faith power through their belief. Although faith power wasn't a god's entire strength, no one complained about having more power, and the same was true for the gods.
After false gods occupied the goddess's body, the Skywing Clan's faith power became dark poison. False gods couldn't absorb this power; instead, it would suppress the true goddess's soul.
So they used their own power to establish connection with the Demon Clan.
The Demon Clan and monsters weren't created by false gods but were species that existed from the world's beginning. The group still didn't know what methods false gods used, how could they cross the faith barrier and establish connection with an existing species?
Or was this a joint plan between the Demon Clan and false gods? They didn't know and could only explore slowly.
As the attack was unleashed, the longsword in Kurtz's hand shattered completely while metal fragments scattered across the grass.
"Perhaps only the legendary Holy Sword can fully bear faith power," Kurtz said, staring at the remnants in his palm.
In his plan, El's Light would be re-forged into a Holy Sword capable of bearing faith power. This Holy Sword would be placed in the first human nation's temple, receiving all people's faith.
This was Kurtz's backup plan for Norn, or rather, for the ideal nation of El.
However, based on the current experiment, whether El's Light could bear this power was unknown. Did he really have to use Orger, Sword of Divine Authority, or the Elves' Holy Authority Sword Atos?
This wasn't what Kurtz wanted since the Holy Sword that humanity worshipped should be humanity's own Sword of Human Rights.
"The cost is high," Somo said, crossing his arms. "Very few swords in this world can bear this power."
Just Olivia's faith alone was terrifying. What would it be like with all the Skywing Clan's faith at its peak? Coupled with Divine Authority Sword Orger's authority, it could surely cut down the gods!
But unfortunately, this was impossible since the Skywing Clan was finished, and Kurtz couldn't obtain their faith. Olivia was just an exception.
"Do we need to use Olge, Sword of Divine Authority to bear this power?" Norn asked.
"No," Kurtz shook his head. "Orger's power is like the gods' power itself, completely different from faith power. If Orger absorb faith power as well, it's hard to predict the consequences of two different powers mixing."
The biggest requirement for carrying the faith power was that the Holy Sword itself had no divine power. Otherwise, an inorganic object like a Holy Sword couldn't regulate its own power like a god.
Hearing this, everyone fell into brief silence.
