Maggie darted back and forth from Lyra's chambers, arms full of bowls, towels, and steaming bundles of herbs. She muttered quick instructions to omegas trailing her, while Knox, with his restless energy, prowled the corridor outside Lyra's chamber like a wolf tormented by the scent of blood. Every time Maggie passed Knox, he did not acknowledge her, but his nostrils flared at the scent of the boiling poultices she carried.
She kept her eyes averted from the two Alphas, moving with the rigour of someone trying to outrun disaster.
Kade stood at the opposite end of the corridor, unmoving with his arms folded across his chest. His face betrayed nothing, not the faintest hint of anxiety or concern. If he felt anything, he buried it behind a mask of absolute control. He stared straight ahead, past the anxious knots of servants and guards and omega girls, all of whom gave him a wide berth.
