Peter, who was engrossed in putting together his LEGOs, nearly knocked over the section he just finished when he heard Meng Ran.
Peter said, a little shyly, "It's just like that, we've been chatting. The other day, she even mentioned you and Gwen went out for the day, and said she hadn't been out in a while either."
Meng Ran quickly asked, "And what did you say?"
Peter replied, "I said I hadn't gone out for a stroll in a while either. I heard the Science Museum has a new exhibit, I haven't seen it yet."
Meng Ran pressed, "And then?"
Peter scratched his head. "Then she said she was a little tired, and then we said goodnight."
Hearing this, Meng Ran couldn't help but sigh and facepalm. "Ugh, you're really something else."
Peter listened to Meng Ran, a little confused, because Meng Ran was speaking Chinese.
"Meng, what are you saying? I don't really understand Chinese. What's 'ma que' and that 'niu bi' thing?" Peter asked, a question mark on his face.
Meng Ran said, "Nothing much, just a bird and an organ."
Peter wanted to ask more, but Meng Ran quickly interrupted, giving him advice on how to flirt and make friends with girls, and how to deepen relationships.
Meng Ran said, "Mary Jane means she wants to hang out with you, get it?"
"But she's a girl, and she wants you to make the first move, understand?"
"You have to do this, then that, and then this. Got it?"
After Meng Ran's constant guidance, Peter suddenly understood: "Oh~ So that's how it is! I get it."
Meng Ran nodded with satisfaction. "That's good. It's just past nine, the perfect time to chat about feelings while snuggled in bed. Remember, show her a different side of yourself, but don't overdo it. Maintain some mystery."
"Then, talk about life, talk about ideals, and elevate the conversation. Let your emotions connect and resonate."
"Finally, ask her out. My car is available. You can drive and pick her up tomorrow. Remember to show off your good qualities and character."
Peter nodded repeatedly, like a chicken pecking at grain, occasionally making sounds of enlightenment, which pleased Meng Ran, who was guiding him.
Patting Peter's leg, Meng Ran said, "Go on, hurry up."
Peter, hearing this, stood up to get his phone and prepare to chat with Mary Jane, but he took a step and then turned back.
"What about this Lego..."
Meng Ran, seeing this, said with disappointment, "What time is it, and you're still thinking about Lego! Go chat with her first. Isn't a soft, sweet girlfriend more fun than Lego? Seriously."
Peter chuckled, "You're right." Then he went to chat with Mary Jane.
Meng Ran watched Peter and thought, Hmm, looks like there's still hope. Ganbatte, Peter!
Watching Peter, who was chatting and grinning like an idiot, Meng Ran pulled out his phone, ready to chat with Gwen and see when he could elevate their revolutionary friendship.
"Hello, Sichuan Girl, have you tried my special chili sauce? How does it taste?"
After eating the chili last time, Meng Ran gave Gwen this nickname. Gwen didn't understand at first, but after Meng Ran explained it, she thought it was interesting and went along with it.
Gwen quickly replied, "It tastes great! My mom said it's delicious too. I just think it could be spicier."
Meng Ran was speechless, not knowing if it was just a little or a whole lot spicier, "Then I'll make you some extra spicy ones in a while."
"Mmhmm!" Gwen was very happy.
The two of them chatted about their day for a while.
Gwen looked a little worried. "Dad's really busy today. He left this morning and hasn't come back yet."
Meng Ran asked, "Is it because of the Evil Ghost?"
Gwen replied, "Yes, all the news today is about the Evil Ghost. Dad's busy because of that too."
Gwen and Meng Ran had discussed the Evil Ghost before. At that time, everyone still thought of him as a masked do-gooder, a vigilante on the streets.
So, after today's news broke, the people who already knew about the Evil Ghost were more shocked than those who just found out today.
People could accept a friendly neighbor being a vigilante, but they couldn't accept criminals being directly judged by this neighbor.
But for Meng Ran now, what these people thought wasn't important. What mattered was sticking to his own sense of justice and not letting more tragedies happen before his eyes.
Now that things had come to this point, Meng Ran decided to ask Gwen directly.
"So, what do you think of Evil Ghost now? I remember you used to like him."
"I see a lot of people are cursing him today, calling him a terrorist and a murderer."
Meng Ran sent the message, waiting for Gwen's reply, feeling a bit nervous for some reason.
It's really uncomfortable to scold myself, Meng Ran thought to himself. I wonder what Gwen thinks. If she feels that way too, will I not have a girlfriend anymore? Waaah, so sad.
Ding! Meng Ran's phone buzzed, interrupting his thoughts. It was a message from Gwen.
"I still think people are going too far. After all, Evil Ghost is judging criminals. He's not indiscriminately killing innocent people."
"Although I still think it's better to leave it to the law, I can understand him too."
"But if I get a chance to see him, I'm definitely kicking his butt for my dad, hmph! It's all because of him that my dad is so busy."
Gwen even added a butt-kicking emoji after saying the last sentence.
Looking at the message Gwen sent, a smile appeared on Meng Ran's face.
Although I don't care what others think, I really can't ignore the opinions of the people I care about. Fortunately, nothing dramatic happened.
With Gwen's reply, Meng Ran also felt relieved. He started to become lively again.
Chatting with Gwen, their relationship became even closer in the process.
In Peter's room, Peter and Meng Ran each held a phone, their faces beaming, and they occasionally let out hehehe laughter.
This is youth.
At the New York Police Department, George sat at his desk, constantly rubbing his temples.
A long day had left him utterly exhausted; he felt like he was losing even more hair.
The matter was settled. He'd sealed off the scene of Ur's death and would issue an official statement tomorrow.
George's feelings about the Evil Ghost were complicated. He knew Ur, and they'd even crossed paths a few times.
He'd played a part in the operation eight years ago that almost caught Ur, but Ur had managed to escape. He'd used Bill to take the fall for him.
The officers involved in that operation had all been deeply frustrated by the outcome. But, they'd been powerless to change the situation.
So, today, with Ur being killed by the Evil Ghost, George's feelings were mixed.
As a police officer, and the police commissioner at that, he was duty-bound to stand on the side of the law and uphold its dignity.
But setting aside that identity, George didn't think the Evil Ghost's actions were wrong. He knew how filthy those criminals were, and how unwilling he was when they evaded justice.
Once upon a time, he had also fantasized about being able to display his divine power and have all these damned people caught. Unfortunately, fantasies were just fantasies, and they dissipated with the dream when he opened his eyes.
"Evil Ghost, oh Evil Ghost." George murmured as he walked out of the New York Police Department's door. It was getting late, and he should go home.
In a luxurious villa, a bald man was sitting in a leather chair, watching the news report about Ur's trial on the computer.
He was the boss of the Crocodile Gang. Bob frowned as he watched the news of Ur's death.
He reached his hand towards the head under the table, and fiercely grabbed his hair, controlling the rhythm.
"Ah~" With the end of the action, he let out a suppressed moan, and the release of pressure made his brows relax a little.
The woman's group stood up and stumbled backward as they left.
Bob picked up the cigar on the table, lit it, and thought in silence.
"Evil Ghost." What was the background of this suddenly appearing weirdo?
Bob had called Ur to put pressure on him, wanting him to resolve the matter quickly and not affect business. He always focused on the speed of problem-solving.
The speed was indeed fast now, but it was Ur who was solved, which Bob had never anticipated. It also made him cast aside his contempt for the Evil Ghost.
Bob picked up the phone.
"Investigate everything about the Evil Ghost, and do it as quickly as possible."
"Tell my good brothers that Ur's territory will be placed under my control for now. The ownership issue will be arranged after this period."
"We're in a precarious position right now. Keep them in line."
"Contact the newspaper one last time. Let them be careful about their coverage of our gang. If they have any issues, have Crow pay them a visit."
Bob issued orders into the phone, thinking things over.
After a moment, Bob hung up and walked to the floor-to-ceiling window.
Looking out at the night, Bob took a puff of his cigar.
"Evil Ghost, let's see what you really are."
Under the same night sky, different people contemplated different things. The long night stretched on, and sleep evaded them.
