Chapter 96 - Loki

Looking at his disheveled brother, Loki's voice was calm but serious: "I need to see you."

Hearing this, Thor suddenly felt a bad premonition. His voice trembled as he asked, "What happened?"

"Tell me… is this about Jotunheim?"

"Let me explain it to Father."

Loki didn't answer Thor. Instead, he spoke with a tone tinged with sorrow: "Father is dead."

Thor froze. He never expected Loki to bring such devastating news. Staring at him in disbelief, he stammered, "W-what?"

Loki continued, his expression heavy with grief: "You were banished… and with a new war threatening us…"

"He simply couldn't bear it anymore."

Then, Loki tried to console Thor: "You must not blame yourself too much."

"I know how much you loved him."

"I tried to tell him, but he wouldn't listen."

Thor bowed his head, overcome with sorrow, while Loki continued speaking.

"He placed the hammer so close… yet you couldn't lift it. How cruel."

"And now the crown of Asgard can only rest upon my head."

Thor lifted his tear-filled blue eyes. His voice shook as he asked, "C-can I go home?"

Thor wasn't concerned with who would rule the throne; he only wanted to return to Asgard to see his father's body and be with his mother.

Seeing Thor's pleading gaze, Loki said solemnly: "The truce with Jotunheim was conditional upon your exile."

"And your mother forbids your return."

Thor realized there was no hope of going home. He opened his mouth to speak, but it felt as if someone had clamped down on his throat.

"I've come to say goodbye, brother," Loki said.

"I'm sorry I can't help you."

Thor, choked with emotion, replied: "No… I should be the one apologizing."

"Thank you for coming to see me."

"Farewell." Loki said finally.

With that, he turned and left the room as mysteriously as he had appeared.

"Goodbye," Thor whispered to the empty room.

Just then, Coulson pushed open the door.

"Goodbye? I just got here," he said, puzzled.

Mengran, who had been standing in the corner, had heard the conversation. His emotions were complicated. How should he put it?

Mengran thought to himself: Thor truly was all muscle, not so clever, while Loki, the God of Mischief, could manipulate him in just a few words.

When Loki turned to leave, Mengran had clearly noticed the change in his expression.

In the blink of an eye, it shifted seamlessly from sorrowful to expressionless, ending with a faint, smug smile at the corner of his lips.

Mengran shook his head and stepped out of the room.

Outside, he saw a tall figure by Thor's hammer—the very Loki who had just deceived Thor.

Loki stood beside Mjolnir, grabbed the handle with one hand, and pulled with all his might.

As expected, the hammer didn't budge.

Frustrated, Loki used both hands, lifting with all his strength.

His handsome face twisted with effort, yet the hammer remained immovable.

Finally, Loki released the handle, glanced at Mjolnir, adjusted his clothes, and left—though his posture betrayed a hint of dissatisfaction.

Mengran approached the hammer.

He gazed at its archaic and imposing design. Deep down, he felt tempted.

He knew Odin had placed powerful enchantments upon it: anyone unworthy could never lift it.

Conversely, anyone able to lift it and deemed worthy would gain the power of Thor.

Such a tantalizing temptation could not be ignored. Mengran focused, channeling all his strength, gripping the hammer's handle and pulling with all his might.

But reality was cruel. Mengran, despite his terrifying strength—enough to overpower even Hulk—could not lift Mjolnir.

He exhaled and released the handle.

Sure enough, brute strength alone was useless against this enchanted hammer.

"Completely illogical," Mengran muttered inwardly.

"Ah, forget it. Just a hammer—no big deal. I'm still powerful without it."

He comforted himself and walked out.

Earlier, he had sensed Thor leaving the area. Apparently, someone had taken him away.

Mengran quickly exited and saw Coulson watching a middle-aged man escort Thor away.

"Dr. Selvig! Don't take him to the bar!" Coulson shouted after them.

On the nearby computer, Thor's identity was being falsified.

Eric Selvig, unable to resist Jane's persistence, had reluctantly attempted to bring Thor back, claiming him as a colleague. All their data had been "borrowed" by S.H.I.E.L.D., so Thor's rash entry into their facility was excused.

Coulson didn't trust this flimsy excuse. Moreover, Thor's information was fabricated. His reason for letting Thor go was to investigate his true identity.

As Thor and Selvig moved away, Coulson instructed the nearby personnel: "Follow them."

Mengran followed at a distance.

Soon, Selvig brought Thor to a bar. They apparently intended to have a drink.

Mengran had no interest in that. He leapt to the rooftop, keeping watch.

"Oh~! Yes~! Oh~!" As he landed, a strange sound caught his attention nearby.
