In a dark, empty space, a hoarse voice spoke to the monsters below.
"The Tesseract has awakened."
"It's in a small, confined space—not in the human world."
"Weak humans are trying to uncover its secrets, but only our allies can truly master it."
"He is ready to be the pathfinder, and we, the Chitauri, will follow closely behind."
"This planet may belong to him."
"But the entire universe will be under our control."
"Humans can only await the arrival of death."
Night fell over the city. Among flickering lights, a helicopter descended and touched down. A bald man wearing an eye mask jumped out.
This was the location where the Tesseract was stored—the S.H.I.E.L.D. Energy Research Center.
Nick Fury leapt from the helicopter and strode toward the entrance. Agent Coulson approached, and Fury asked, "How bad is the situation?"
Coulson removed his sunglasses and replied, "The worst part is… we don't even know what's going on."
He then led Fury into the research facility, taking the elevator down to the real underground lab.
As they walked, Coulson explained, "Four hours ago, Dr. Selvig detected an energy signature from the Tesseract."
Fury frowned. "When did NASA authorize him to run tests?"
Coulson answered, "Dr. Selvig didn't run any tests. He was in his room at the time—it was the Tesseract emitting the energy itself."
Fury continued listening as Coulson briefed him, and soon they arrived at the experimental chamber.
Professor Selvig was staring intently at the Tesseract. Since the Thor incident a year ago, Fury had invited him here to study the Tesseract.
Fury asked, "Professor, what's going on right now?"
Adjusting his instruments, Selvig replied, "The Tesseract is… not behaving properly."
"This is no time for jokes, Professor," Fury said sharply.
"I'm not joking," Selvig responded. "It's extremely active and seems to have a mind of its own."
After further briefing, Fury called for Hawkeye, who was stationed here.
"Agent Barton, come here."
Barton descended and reported.
Fury asked, "Did you see anything? Anyone entering or tampering with the Tesseract?"
"None. Dr. Selvig is innocent. The problem isn't on our side," Barton replied.
Fury raised an eyebrow.
Barton continued, "The Tesseract is a doorway to another part of the universe, right?"
"Yes, it should open both ways," Fury confirmed.
Barton had picked up much knowledge during his time here. His simple phrasing perfectly summarized the Tesseract's function.
Suddenly, the Tesseract pulsed with brilliant blue energy, shaking the entire research center.
Crackling sounds accompanied the energy, and a faint blue vortex formed around the cube, spinning faster and faster.
A beam of blue energy shot toward the far wall, spreading and forming a doorway-like space.
After a few seconds, the energy exploded outward in a brilliant blue wave, forcing everyone to squint against it.
When they opened their eyes, they saw a strangely shaped man crouched on the floor.
He held a scepter with a gemstone glowing with the same light as the Tesseract.
Agents raised their guns, cautiously approaching.
The man slowly stood, revealing his striking, androgynous face—it was Loki, who had wandered through space for a long time.
Sweat beaded his forehead, showing that the teleportation journey had been arduous.
Nick Fury shouted, "Sir, put down your spear!"
Loki glanced at the scepter in his hand, then suddenly shot a blue beam toward Fury.
Fury and Coulson were blasted backward.
The surrounding agents opened fire, but the bullets merely bounced off with clanging sounds, falling harmlessly to the floor.
In an instant, Loki lunged at several agents, killing a few with swift strikes.
Within thirty seconds, the floor was littered with fallen S.H.I.E.L.D. agents.
At that moment, Hawkeye (Barton) leapt toward Loki, throwing punches.
Loki grabbed Barton's fists with immense strength, freezing his arms.
Looking at Barton, Loki said, "Ah, you are different."
"Follow me, and I will show you a world unlike any you've seen."
Before Barton could react, Loki tapped his scepter against his chest.
Barton's eyes turned completely black, then shifted to a glowing blue.
Fury, unaware that Barton was controlled, staggered to his feet and hurriedly packed the Tesseract into a briefcase.
As he tried to leave quietly, Loki turned to him and said in a deep voice, "Put down the case, sir. I still need it."
