When Loki arrived on Earth, Meng Ran was at his apartment, getting cozy with Gwen. This year of relative calm had allowed their relationship to progress quickly.
After all, there weren't many things to worry about anymore, no strange monsters or people for the Hexagram League to deal with, leaving Meng Ran and Gwen plenty of time alone together.
In a bright apartment next to Columbia University, Gwen was lying on the sofa, propped on her side, watching TV while nibbling on an apple.
Her long, slender legs were smooth and fair, impossible not to admire. Her loose pajamas couldn't hide her alluring curves.
Over the past year, Gwen had become even more beautiful, a transformation that certainly owed a lot to Meng Ran's attentive care and affection.
On their high school graduation day, the Hexagram League had celebrated properly.
Of course, there was plenty of fine wine, some of it rare vintage from the Harry family collection.
Fueled by alcohol, Meng Ran and Gwen finally stepped into adulthood, sharing moments both thoroughly enjoyed.
Peter and Mary Jane were no exception—if Peter hadn't seized the opportunity, with his frustratingly low emotional intelligence, who knew how long they would have waited?
In the end, Peter and Mary Jane, as well as Meng Ran and Gwen, both couples experienced their first steps into adulthood under the influence of wine.
Meanwhile, Harry and Liu Xiu, the two remaining singles, slept on the sofa in the League's base, along with a Venom that Meng Ran had tossed aside.
In the apartment's living room, Gwen flipped through TV channels with the remote, but found nothing interesting.
Bored, she got up, slipped on her slippers, and walked toward the kitchen, where Meng Ran was busy.
She stepped behind him, wrapping her arms around his waist and resting her cheek against his back.
"Honey~ I'm so bored~ Come play with me for a while~" she cooed.
Meng Ran felt the softness against his back. Listening to Gwen's playful voice, he put down his spatula and turned to hug her.
"Mua~" He kissed her pouty lips and said gently, "Sweetie~ Didn't you say you wanted some spicy sauce?"
"It'll be ready soon. Once it's done, we can 'play.'"
"Hmph! I mean serious playing~" Gwen corrected him.
"I mean serious playing too! What, do you want to do something… not-so-serious? Hehehe," Meng Ran teased, giving her a mischievous look as if surprised by her thoughts.
"Ew~! I'm not talking to you, you pervert," Gwen said, lightly punching him on the chest before leaving the kitchen.
Meng Ran clutched his chest, feigning heartbreak as if Gwen's punch had shattered it.
Just then, Xiaobai's voice rang out: "Boss, a S.H.I.E.L.D. research facility has been completely destroyed by unknown energy. Nearly two kilometers of buildings and roads have collapsed."
Meng Ran and Gwen immediately stopped their playful antics, their expressions turning serious.
Meng Ran asked Xiaobai, "Any casualties?"
"All casualties so far are S.H.I.E.L.D. agents. No civilians have been harmed," Xiaobai replied.
Meng Ran nodded, thinking: Looks like Loki has arrived. The timing fits.
After a moment, he looked up and said to Gwen, "Honey, it seems we're going to be busy again."
Gwen nodded, "Looks like things won't stay peaceful for long."
Meng Ran turned back to Xiaobai. "Notify everyone. We'll hold a meeting at the base in one hour."
"Understood!" Xiaobai responded, heading to alert the others.
One hour later, at the Hexagram League's base, Meng Ran was briefing the team in the conference room about the explosion, going over the details.
"I expect Nick Fury will contact me soon," Meng Ran said after finishing his report.
"This enemy isn't something we can handle alone. We may be facing an entire army—a foreign alien army."
"So we might have to cooperate with S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Avengers that Fury has been planning, to face this crisis together."
Harry, curious, asked, "Who will be in this Avengers team? Will it include Tony Stark, like you mentioned before?"
Meng Ran explained, "Tony Stark will likely be there, along with others."
"Including the Hulk I dealt with before, and Captain America from WWII."
"S.H.I.E.L.D.'s top agents should also be involved, as well as Thor, the alien who appeared last year."
The team, hearing Meng Ran's explanation, got a rough idea of the Avengers.
At that moment, Xiaobai's voice came over the intercom: "Boss, Nick Fury wants to meet you. He left an address."
Gwen and the others looked at Meng Ran, surprised at how quickly Fury had acted.
Meng Ran told them he'd go, then made his way to the address Fury left.
Soon, he arrived on the rooftop of a building.
He looked ahead to see a solitary, dark figure blending into the night, silently waiting.
"Seems you've become a bit more polite this time. There are still big names above us, but no small fries around," Meng Ran said hoarsely as he approached Fury.
Fury met his gaze, then spoke solemnly: "Mr. Phantom, you understand why I'm here, don't you?"
He knew Phantom had noticed the explosion and had probably sensed something unusual.
Meng Ran replied, "I know, but not completely. You should explain in detail."
Fury smirked lightly. "Alright, then I'll waste a bit more of your time."
"This world is in danger, Mr. Phantom."
"An extraterrestrial threat is imminent. We need to unite to face this enemy together."
Meng Ran internally groaned, thinking: All this fluff talk, but why not mention the Tesseract or your research? This black egg is trouble.
Despite his complaint, he said, "You need to make it clearer. For example, what is bringing these enemies? And what role is S.H.I.E.L.D. playing?"
"I could give the Director some hints, like the Tesseract, and Asgard," Meng Ran added.
Fury squinted his single eye, noticing how this Phantom always seemed to hold hidden knowledge, putting him in a passive position each time.
