A figure descended directly onto the Chitauri behemoth and, like a sharp blade, sliced it cleanly in half.
Another figure landed atop a giant beast and, controlling a strange energy, compressed it into a long slab of flesh only half its original thickness.
The former was Demon—Meng Ran; the latter, Black Armor—Liu Xiu.
With Liu Xiu's strength, he could have flattened the Chitauri behemoth entirely.
But that would have been gruesome, messy, and more effort to clean up. Compressing it to half-thickness was far easier—and it still guaranteed the creature's death.
After dealing with the behemoths, Meng Ran and Liu Xiu approached Steve and the others.
Seeing these formidable warriors descend from the sky and effortlessly eliminate two massive beasts, Steve and the others were both astonished and relieved.
"We need to find a way to close this spatial gate quickly, or more enemies will keep pouring in," Meng Ran said gravely to Steve and the team.
Steve and Tony nodded in agreement.
Tony then offered his own observation: "There's just one last problem."
"A layer of energy surrounds the outside of the Tesseract. Our current attacks can't break it."
Meng Ran responded: "Ordinary means won't work."
"But Loki's scepter emits energy similar to the Tesseract's. Using it, we should be able to shatter this barrier."
Tony's eyes lit up. He remembered the scans Banner performed on the scepter aboard the SHIELD carrier.
He exhaled and said: "Finally, we have a way to close this damned gate."
"Thor mentioned that Loki has been captured by someone called Ghost, somewhere near my office. The scepter should be nearby as well."
Meng Ran nodded: "Correct. Ghost is my teammate."
Then he turned to Steve: "Do you have anyone near Stark Tower?"
Steve pressed the earpiece: "Anyone near Stark Tower right now?"
Natasha's voice replied almost immediately: "I'm near Stark Tower."
"Good," Steve said. "Go find Loki's scepter. It should be there."
"Once you get it, use it to control the Tesseract. That's likely our only way to close the spatial gate."
"Understood," Natasha responded crisply.
Steve then looked at Meng Ran: "Natasha's going for the scepter. If all goes well, the spatial gate should be closed soon."
Meng Ran nodded. "Then let's continue the fight."
"More Chitauri soldiers are descending. We need to stop them from spreading outward."
After coordinating with Steve and the others, Meng Ran and Liu Xiu split up to eliminate as many Chitauri soldiers as possible.
Meng Ran quickly reached a densely populated area of Chitauri troops.
His arrival immediately drew their attacks.
The soldiers fired countless blue energy beams at him.
Meng Ran didn't face the attack head-on. Using several rapid teleports, he appeared behind them.
Black, sharp tendrils erupted from his body, impaling the Chitauri soldiers mercilessly.
Once he ensured they were dead, Meng Ran flung their corpses aside and moved toward the center of the area.
He soon found an ideal spot.
Looking at a nearby building, he bent his knees and leapt powerfully.
With tremendous force, he soared from the ground and landed on the rooftop.
Once stable, Meng Ran calmed his mind.
He concentrated, drawing energy from his dantian.
As this energy flowed through his limbs and body, the sky above him darkened, gathering black clouds.
These clouds now covered roughly three city blocks around him—far larger than the area of two 800-meter sports fields affected by the basic Phantom Rainfall.
Meng Ran had upgraded the skill to intermediate level, using tens of thousands of points—a painful expenditure.
Under his control, the sky now appeared as if a torrential storm was about to fall. Everyone on the battlefield immediately noticed this eerie phenomenon.
On the rooftop, Meng Ran closed his eyes, sensing all living beings within the Phantom Rainfall's area.
He marked the friendly units to prevent accidental harm.
After marking them, he opened his eyes and, concentrating, commanded the clouds to release the phantom rain.
Within the three blocks shrouded in black clouds, a fine, dense, needle-like rain began to fall.
Chitauri soldiers and giant beasts in the area were instantly pierced by the rain, their life force drained.
Their corpses were riddled with countless tiny holes, emitting wisps of black smoke—a sight that would horrify anyone with trypophobia.
Not far away, Tony maneuvered his troops of Chitauri through the city streets.
His chaotic movements were intentional, using buildings and streets to eliminate more enemies.
Just as he had earlier ducked into an underground parking garage, two Chitauri squads in flying vehicles failed to dodge him and crashed inside.
As Meng Ran released the Phantom Rain, Tony passed through the area, witnessing the deadly rain strike the Chitauri.
Flying from street to street, enemy soldiers following him fell lifeless to the ground.
Hovering in the air, he caught some of the falling droplets on the back of his armored hand.
The glowing rain slid off like ordinary water.
"J.A.R.V.I.S., can you analyze the composition of these droplets?" Tony asked.
Falling Phantom Rain (Part 2)
After hearing Tony's question, J.A.R.V.I.S. began analyzing the rain.
A moment later, he responded:"I'm sorry, sir, but I cannot analyze these raindrops.
These drops are not ordinary water; they contain a strange energy I've never encountered before.
Based on your current condition and that of the Chitauri soldiers, this rain appears to be able to distinguish enemies, which is why it caused you no harm."
Tony was stunned by J.A.R.V.I.S.'s analysis. He hadn't expected the Phantom's attack to be so powerful and mysterious.
It wasn't just Tony who was shocked—other members of the Avengers and the Hexagram League were equally astonished.
After witnessing the attack's overwhelming power, the Avengers also felt a newfound respect for the Phantom.
Thankfully, the Phantom was on their side—otherwise, facing such a strong and mysterious enemy would have been terrifying.
Meanwhile, members of the Hexagram League were communicating quietly among themselves. They had never seen Meng Ran use this skill before.
Through the comms, Peter kept exclaiming:"Oh my god! Did you guys see that skill?"
"The aliens just froze like they lost connection and turned into corpses!"
Hearing Peter's remark, Harry added:"Yeah, the Phantom is insanely strong. No one could possibly withstand that attack."
"But why hasn't he used it before?"
Gwen speculated:"Maybe he simply never encountered a situation like this before, so the skill hadn't been used."
The others fell silent, realizing she might be right.
With Meng Ran's strength, his previous opponents never required him to use this skill. It was clearly designed for massive group attacks.
Peter continued in awe:"Once this is over, I have to learn that from him. It's so cool!"
Liu Xiu, who had been silent until now, said:"Emmmm… I think this skill is probably unique to the Phantom. We might not be able to learn it.
There's a mysterious energy in the rain—something we simply don't have."
Peter groaned dramatically:"Oh no! That's so unfair! I want such a cool skill too!"
Liu Xiu comforted him:"It's okay. You have plenty of cool skills yourself."
"For example…"
Liu Xiu's words trailed off. He suddenly realized he couldn't think of any cool skills Peter actually had.He had only meant to comfort him, but it backfired.
Peter, feeling speechless, thought it might have been better if Liu Xiu hadn't said anything.
Even Mary Jane, who had been silently working, couldn't help but laugh.
The comms filled with cheerful chatter again.
Peter was frustrated, but he could only vent his anger on the Chitauri soldiers.
He punched one away, then used his web-shooters to fire electric webs, electrocuting a group of Chitauri to the ground.
On Meng Ran's side, the Phantom Rain continued to fall. He stood atop a building, observing the damage his skill caused and nodding in satisfaction.
"It's been 30 seconds. Another 30 seconds should clear this area completely," he thought, calculating the timing.
Once a full minute passed, he dissipated the clouds above, restoring the clear sky.
The districts previously covered by the rain were now bathed in sunlight, with no Chitauri soldiers in sight.
They had all fallen lifeless in various places.
Meng Ran then leaped from the rooftop to the streets.
Moving quickly, he sensed any stragglers who had avoided the rain.
These unlucky Chitauri had survived the Phantom Rain's initial attack but now faced Meng Ran directly.
Unlike dying under the rain, which might have left their bodies intact, facing Meng Ran meant they wouldn't even remain in one piece.
As he moved, black tendrils shot out from him, grabbing the surviving soldiers. Some were impaled, others torn apart.
Soon, he cleared all the streets in the area.
Afterwards, he checked the comms for updates from others.
Gwen and the others had no trouble handling the Chitauri either. The only problem was sheer numbers, and except for Liu Xiu and Harry, most lacked large-area attack capabilities.
Liu Xiu had his unique ability.
Harry had his specialized pumpkin bombs.
Gwen and Peter excelled at one-on-one fights but were less effective in mass combat.
Still, their combat power was enough to handle the soldiers; at worst, it would take some time, but no major issues would arise.
Since his allies were fine, Meng Ran decided to move to another area.
He sensed Captain America's location and headed there.
When Meng Ran arrived, Steve was holding his shield in one hand and a Chitauri gun in the other, defending while firing.
The intense combat left Steve no time to breathe, which was why Meng Ran had come.
Black tendrils shot from Meng Ran, piercing the nearby Chitauri soldiers like skewers.
This attack gave Steve a chance to catch his breath.
Breathing heavily, Steve asked:"Thanks. Have you cleared your area?"
Meng Ran flicked the corpses from his tendrils to the ground and replied:"Area's clean."
"What about Natasha? Did she find Loki's scepter?"
Before Steve could answer, Natasha's voice came through his comms:"Captain, I've found the scepter. We can shut down the Tesseract at any time."
Steve's urgency spiked. Ignoring Meng Ran, he pressed the comms:"Do it—now!"
Natasha immediately prepared to insert the scepter into the device to stop the Tesseract's energy flow.
Just then, Tony shouted over the comms:"Wait!"
