Renji returned to the Uchiha residence, rested a bit, but couldn't sleep. He dressed, leapt onto the rooftop, startling one of his clansmen on watch.
When they saw it was him, they bowed politely and returned to patrol.
Looking at the vast sky full of stars, Renji's thoughts wandered far.
Today's appearance of their group had been overwhelming. Not only did they display the might of the Uchiha, they also shocked a bunch of narrow-minded nobles.
In a way, they had even helped Konoha deal with some petty political nuisances. Which meant that whatever small moves he made here, the higher-ups were unlikely to intervene.
Renji began mapping his plan:
First, cooperate with the allied clans to build factories, splitting shares. The Higashino family's grain could be used for brewing alcohol.
The Hara family's meat could become restaurants, KFC-style. No cola? Then other drinks. Create a brand, promote it, and sell it nationwide. The model was simple: copy his past life's playbook, but the propaganda had to be strong.
Second, form a business guild. Once money was flowing, others would covet it. Bring the daimyo into it, then rope in moderate and neutral factions.
Brand it as the "Royal Chamber of Commerce." Monopoly over Fire Country's fast-food chains, banning private brewing of royal drinks. Whoever violated the rules would be arrested. A cut of the profits would be given to Konoha.
Third, gain the daimyo's trust. Build ties, continue driving a wedge between the Hokage faction. He could recommend White Fang as a force to "maintain order," then eliminate another money-making valley of Danzō's. Cut off one of Danzō's wallets, intensify the internal strife.
Fourth, use money to buy off minor clans. Buy land like the other nobles, expand factories, set up orphanages, establish hospitals within the Fire Country.
Fifth, rebuild the Guardian Twelve. Uchiha, Hyūga, Uzumaki, Inuzuka, and the Sword clans should all play important roles, while also inviting the Fire Temple monks.
Exhaling, Renji told himself that all five steps had to be achieved. He had to turn Fire Country into Uchiha's sub-base. Even if the worst came, they would at least secure a safe foundation.
The next morning, after breakfast, a close retainer of the daimyo arrived at the estate to meet the Second Elder. Soon after, the elder summoned Renji and Duantian.
The retainer stepped forward, opened two boxes. Inside were Guardian Twelve sashes.
"The daimyo witnessed the skill of you two yesterday and was deeply impressed. He wishes to invite both of you to serve as members of the Guardian Twelve, protectors of his safety."
Renji stared at the sash. Last night, no shooting stars, yet now a pillow delivered while drowsing. Without hesitation, he tied the sash around his waist.
"Thank you, Daimyo, for your trust. I will guard you with all my strength and uphold your interests."
Duantian quickly followed, tying his sash and saying a few polite words.
The retainer was overjoyed. He had thought the Uchiha would refuse outright. But these two seemed cooperative, nothing like the aloof ninja he had expected.
Renji leaned forward.
"If the Guardian Twelve are all as weak as yesterday's man, then only the two of us cannot guarantee the daimyo's safety. We also have three more clansmen with strong skills. If the daimyo doubts, they can prove themselves and take the sashes themselves." He pointed at his own sash with a calm smile.
Cold sweat broke out on the retainer's back. This clan truly lived up to their fearsome reputation. If denied, would they really kill someone and snatch the sashes? That was not for him to decide.
Sensing the man's unease, Renji softened his tone. "No need to trouble yourself. Bring us before the daimyo. We will speak directly, so you won't be blamed."
Relieved, the retainer nodded.
"Very well. I can escort you into the palace, but whether the daimyo sees you, and when, is not for me to decide."
The group followed him to the daimyo's mansion. Along the way, Yan discreetly slipped him silver, saying,
"Please guide us well. We're new to the palace and unfamiliar with customs. We'll rely on your instruction."
Money moved all worlds. The retainer's face lit up, and he enthusiastically explained the layout and etiquette as he led them. Soon they were waiting in a side hall.
Inside, the retainer fulfilled his part: he praised the Uchiha to the daimyo, calling them heirs of ancient grandeur, brilliant youths of unmatched ability, loyal to the daimyo, always thinking of his well-being. He talked endlessly.
The daimyo understood at once the man had been bribed, but who disliked hearing sweet words? What truly stunned him was that the Uchiha had actually sent gifts. Clearly, these young ones had a plan. So he decided to meet them.
Shortly, they were summoned to the garden. The daimyo appeared, dressed plainly, more like a wealthy elder than a ruler. He smiled warmly, seeming approachable.
"Greetings, Daimyo," the five said together.
"Ha, no need for such stiffness," the daimyo laughed. "You two already serve as Guardians. You came to me today because you have something more to say, don't you?"
Renji bowed. "Indeed. We are honored by your invitation, yet also troubled. A corps of twelve, but only two with real strength?
That cannot ensure your safety. In this world there are countless shinobi stronger than us. If the Guardian Twelve cannot face them, then the very purpose of this corps is lost.
"To protect you, Daimyo, is our principle. Yet the other Guardians are far too weak. I propose a reorganization. If you think me unworthy, then invite White Fang, Hatake Sakumo.
He is the new war god of Fire Country, current commander of ANBU, and the strongest contender for Fourth Hokage.
"If you write to Konoha, the Uchiha will assist in mediating, and together we will form a Guardian corps worthy of you."
The daimyo studied him carefully. "Your goal isn't simply reorganization, is it?"
Renji smiled. "You see through me, Daimyo. I also wish to ease your burdens. The valley stronghold known as Yama-dani should be erased. We Uchiha destroyed one before. Another has no right to remain. Let the new Guardians eliminate it for you."
The daimyo considered.
"Very well. I will write to the Hokage. What you do after that, I neither know nor interfere in. Bring me the result I desire, and that is enough."
Renji bowed again.
"Rest assured, Daimyo. Everything will be the independent will of the Guardians. It will never involve you."
