The harbor market opened at eleven on the dot, and the guy behind the fish counter knew me by face now. That should concern me more than it does.

"The bluefin again?" He was already reaching for the cooler.

"Two cuts. The thick ones."

"For the girlfriend or the cat?"

"Both. They're the same level of demanding."

He laughed and wrapped the fish in wax paper while I paid with cash from a wallet that Akari had organized by denomination because she found my previous system, which was no system, physically offensive. The tuna was still cold when I tucked it into my jacket pocket. Maki's tails tightened around my neck in approval.

"Good Master," she purred. "The harbor man respects you."

"The harbor man wants my repeat business."

"Same thing."
