Chapter 12 - For Sale, Not Free

"Is that all?"

Wilton looks at the old woman in front of him with somewhat deep eyes.

Long-term comfortable living has indeed made him somewhat dull, but that doesn't mean he's lost his wisdom.

"Before that, I hope you can take Magic Net Rings to the kingdom's border."

"You want me to cooperate with you in testing whether the Magic Internet can transmit messages that far?" Wilton instantly understands her meaning.

As the kingdom's fastest magician, when he goes all out, he can even be several times faster than griffin messengers.

He just doesn't quite understand why she's so urgent about this.

Communication runes don't seem to matter for these two days!

"Yes, and if possible, I hope you can give Magic Net Rings to more border guardians, especially the northern garrison."

As soon as the words "northern garrison" come out, Wilton's breathing stops: "The Watch Wall?"

"Some scholars from our society have disappeared near there." The old woman takes a deep breath: "It's still unclear whether it's ice spirits or cultists... Someone in the Magic Net is discussing that the ice spirits' actions in the north seem somewhat strange. I also want you to go confirm."

After a brief silence, Wilton finally speaks: "How many Magic Net Rings are there now?"

"None." The old woman shakes her head: "Magic Net Rings become soul-bound once used. We can only hope Coffin-Carrying Heddy comes back quickly."

"Or we successfully replicate them."

"Are you sure this Magic Net Ring isn't divine magic?" Wilton seems to finally realize something.

Divine magic and magic are two completely separate systems.

Once a high-level bishop of the Church of Light tried to use magic to drive divine magic. As a result, this bishop died, his skull completely empty inside, his brain burned to ash.

Divine gifts with such miraculous effects—aren't they really divine magic?

He doesn't dare research divine magic runes.

As a legendary mage, although he looks old, he's actually still in his prime.

"No, these are pure magic runes, I can guarantee it, and I'll be responsible for the final etching." After a slight pause, the old woman reminds him: "Don't forget, this is a 'divine gift' from the Goddess of Magic."

The Goddess of Magic has no church, no faith system, naturally no clerics, and no divine magic.

Legend says she's the only one in this world who saw through the essence of divine magic and used magic power to develop the magician profession.

Would such an existence have divine magic?

No spellcaster has ever considered this question.

But all spellcasters would instantly give an answer.

No!

How could the Lady of Mysteries focus her attention on divine magic?

"Wait! My goodness, I didn't expect you to become so cunning too! You're no longer that little girl from 200 years ago who clung to me calling me 'Uncle Wilton.'"

Just as Wilton is about to agree, he suddenly remembers something and exclaims: "Coffin-Carrying Heddy's coffin belongs to that old guy. I can just go find him directly, can't I? He can't possibly leave that magic anomaly zone, right?"

"Don't you dare try to make me research divine magic!"

As soon as his exclamation falls, he disappears from his mansion.

When he appears again, he's already in the black forest in the eastern mountains of the capital.

"Really gloomy~ If I were him, I'd rather have gone to sleep a hundred years ago... though there's not much difference, damn it!"

Wilton keeps complaining but still quickly goes deeper and knocks on the huge tombstone.

Before long, he successfully enters the underground reception room.

"Wilton, you, the president of the Royal Mage Society, actually have free time to come to my godforsaken wasteland. How truly surprising!"

The old mage doesn't even prepare a cup of light tea and doesn't seem to intend to.

"Senior brother, you're talking like I never visit you." Wilton shows an extremely exaggerated sad expression.

In contrast is Heddy's astonished expression.

The president of the Royal Mage Society, such a big shot, a legendary magician, is actually her old man's junior brother?!

Just how old is this old guy?

Don't high-level magicians only have 300 years of lifespan?

Sure enough, he won't die even if I die!

"Then let me ask you, do you have any impression of this child? She became my apprentice twelve years ago." The old mage snorts disdainfully: "Speak up, what are you looking for me for? If you still want that kind of potion, sorry, I don't have any."

"No, I've given up!"

Seemingly worried the old mage will reveal secrets he's buried for years, Wilton quickly changes the topic: "Child, you're the one distributing Magic Net Rings in the city, right?"

"Yes... yes!"

Heddy is somewhat nervous.

Facing a legendary figure, no one would stay calm.

Except for the old magician, of course.

"Magic Net Rings are divine gifts from the Goddess of Magic. The distribution rules are set by God."

The old magician shows a proud expression: "Wilton, if you want these rings, go wait in the city obediently."

"You still have more?! That's fantastic!"

Wilton's ears are like they have a filter, automatically filtering out bad sounds from the outside, and he directly says: "I need 1,000! If not 1,000, 800 will do."

Heddy's eyes roll around.

He needs this many?

Then wouldn't I not need to distribute them?

No! I shouldn't use up the free quota, I should sell them to this guy.

The Royal Mage Society, an association supported by royalty.

The richest spellcaster in the kingdom!

Heddy is obviously still too naive. The old magician's reaction is much faster: "My goodness! You actually need so many? Do you want to distribute them directly to everyone in the Royal Mage Society?!"

Before Wilton can speak, the old magician continues: "Most of our Magic Net Rings have already been distributed, but I, a believer of the Goddess of Magic, a living saint in the magical field, am willing to pray once for you, beseeching the Goddess to bestow more divine gifts!"

"Go back, I need to start preparing. Remember to prepare more gold shields, at least 10,000! Otherwise you'll never get that many Magic Net Rings."

Without giving this legendary magician any chance to react, the old magician sends him away, leaving only the dumbfounded Heddy.

"Teacher, didn't God say to sell them at one gold shield per ring?"

"God wants us to collect gold shields just to let them know Magic Net Rings don't come easily, right? Do you think a price of one gold coin each can make that guy feel pain? Can make His Majesty the King behind him feel pain?"

The old magician looks at Heddy with a strange expression: "Child, you still have so much to learn..."

In the Goddess of Magic's divine realm.

The doll Betty looks at this scene with amazement on her face: "Lord Ren, did you know early on that this old man was shameless and that's why you chose him?"
