Chapter 30 - Just the Right Time

"Have the warriors prepare for battle!"

Lucina spoke rapidly: "All non-combatants in the castle evacuate immediately. Herrick Fort... might not hold."

The Herrick family was ultimately a family skilled in war.

Even facing desperate straits, they mobilized quickly. All able fighters and war supplies in the city began rapidly moving to the walls while non-combatants gathered at the south gate to retreat.

Soon after, black dust clouds came again from the northern ridge. The overwhelming pressure made breathing difficult for soldiers on the walls.

They even felt nearby peaks seemed to be getting polluted...

"Perhaps today is the Herrick family's final battle... at least we held until the last moment!" Lucina watched the monsters appear in view. "Knight Bruno, looks like I can't fulfill what I promised you."

"No, I'm honored to witness this!" After a standard knight's salute, Knight Bruno also turned his gaze to the distance.

On the walls, exhausted warriors stood up again, returning to their posts.

The area near the wall crack was packed with close-combat soldiers.

They'd prepared for the final stand!

Through the gaps, they could clearly see countless ice spirits charging toward them one after another.

The scent of living beings was like a beacon attracting them.

Lucina's knuckles turned white gripping her staff.

Just as she quietly waited for these monsters to enter attack range, suddenly a voice reached her ears: "Count Herrick, looks like I came at just the right time."

"Grand Magician Wilton!"

The moment Lucina saw that seemingly calm face, her expression brightened with joy, then grew worried: "Though you're a legendary magician, facing so many ice spirits alone..."

"I brought some good stuff!" Wilton waved his hand and a pile of boxes floated down from the sky: "These are all flame vortex magic bombs. Each one can cast a flame vortex—50,000 total..."

Perhaps worried Lucina wouldn't understand, Wilton quickly explained magic bombs' principles and usage, even activating one himself and using magic power to project it into the distant ice spirit horde.

Hiss—

After seeing this, Lucina couldn't help but gasp.

Flame vortex power was honestly excellent among low-level magic, but seemed insufficient before mid-level magicians, let alone before her in such warfare... But this was a full 50,000!

Even draining every magician in the city couldn't throw 5,000!

And facing so many ice spirits, quantity seemed more important than power!

Lucina's mind raced. Ice spirits were very close—she had to quickly arrange everything properly.

Plan after plan appeared in her mind, then got rejected, continuously optimized as she began issuing orders, distributing these magic bombs to various positions.

The whole process took only the time for ice spirits to advance two kilometers... When all ice spirits entered attack range, Lucina's vigorous voice rang out: "Enemies have entered attack position! Magicians activate magic bombs, catapults prepare—three... two... one... fire!"

With the sound of winches releasing, countless small catapults operated, launching fist-sized magic bombs replicated by the Kingdom of Dawn in perfect arcs through the air!

The next second, explosions sounded.

Flame vortexes formed below.

Countless flames rose.

It felt even more shocking than legion magic!

Even low-level magic could create terrifying effects with sufficient quantity.

Flaming vortexes continuously appeared as waves of heat mixed with putrid stench spread like storms.

Lucina couldn't help showing some excitement: "Continue firing!"

Under her voice's stimulus, surrounding soldiers finally reacted and hurriedly began tightening winches...

These soldiers didn't know what magic bombs were and had never heard of them before, but now they understood what they were. Everyone felt their hearts pounding wildly, blood surging rapidly through their bodies. Watching the sea of fire below and ice spirits struggling within it, every face showed excitement and disbelief!

The kingdom actually possessed such weapons!

They were saved!

The second round of magic bombs launched, new explosions sounded, flames grew more scorching. They even wondered if the monsters below would be roasted...

"Continue firing! Archers prepare!"

Lucina's voice sounded again.

At this point, ice spirits weren't very far from the castle. Arrows carrying magic bombs shot out should be able to clear most surviving monsters... Of course, after this there was another closer defense line—throwers...

Catapults, archers, throwers—each hid behind walls, throwing magic bomb after magic bomb.

If magic bombs didn't require magic power to activate, and if the castle's magicians including mage apprentices weren't so limited in number, these 50,000 magic bombs probably wouldn't be enough to throw!

Wilton watched this scene, his mouth twitching slightly.

Honestly, such attacks certainly couldn't threaten him as a legendary, but somehow he developed the idea of not wanting to face such an army directly.

Lucina and others stood on the walls, watching those monsters gradually become sparse and powerless under wave-like bombardment. Even pollution began stagnating, and magical attacks from some magical ice spirits had become very weak. They couldn't help but breathe long sighs of relief.

These terrifying assaults that could have easily crushed them were resolved so easily.

At least the main force was eliminated.

"Grand Magician Wilton, do you know where these ice spirits came from? How many more are there? Magic bomb consumption was excessive—we might need more supplies..." Lucina finally had time to ask the question that had been worrying her.

"Don't worry, I just came from the watch wall. It's completed self-repair and there won't be more main forces behind—at most some scattered stragglers." Though Wilton showed a smiling expression, his mouth couldn't help twitching. More supplies? Were they trying to kill him?!

Even as a legendary magician responsible for transport from the capital to the northern border, he still had to produce frantically in his spare time and nearly got drained dry!

Seeming to demonstrate his embarrassment, Wilton quickly added: "Based on current information, cultists probably blasted open a gap, but we haven't figured out exactly what they wanted to do!"

In a tavern in a small town near the watch wall.

Several cultists gathered together with very ugly expressions: "Why did it fail so quickly? This isn't what was agreed!"

"Archbishop Cain, this isn't our fault. The Kingdom of Dawn is now using Magic Net Rings for communication everywhere, greatly compressing message transmission time. Plus they produced some magical item called magic bombs that can instantly cast low-level magic... All major war zones combined, they brought out at least 100,000!"

"Hmph, all excuses! The Fallen lost significantly this time cooperating with you and need compensation."

Cain's expression was serious, but his mind was already thinking about what Magic Net Rings and magic bombs were. He'd only been lurking at the watch wall for two months—how did it feel like he'd missed an entire era...
