Chapter 24 - Trust from the Old Man

John Wick quickly composed himself, facing the armored man before him. He showed no signs of fear or hesitation.

"Just kill me."

He spoke calmly.

After all these years in this business, he'd long since put life and death aside.

In his mind, he recalled a face, not beautiful, but full of tenderness.

And a lively little dog.

He closed his eyes.

"Is that so?"

Anton sized up the man before him.

Based on Batman's experience, the man reeked of killer.

There were two extremes when it came to assassins.

The first type was unprofessional, spilling everything with a little interrogation. The second was highly professional, and torture was completely useless.

This man was undoubtedly the latter.

"Everyone wants to live, especially someone like you. You live in the darkest corners of the world, yet you yearn for the light more than anyone."

Anton remained calm, his tone even and measured. He lowered his voice, saying, "Admit it, you want to live more than anyone."

John Wick didn't speak.

"Woof!"

A sharp bark abruptly startled him, causing him to snap his eyes open.

Fixing his gaze on Anton, an uncontainable fury ignited in his eyes like a prairie fire, instantly blazing.

"Your dog is fine."

Anton walked behind John Wick and held up the dog, whose limbs were also bound, in front of the man. He smiled. "But I can't guarantee whether it will die before you. There's a dish in the East called dog hot pot. It's spicy but not dry, numbing but not overpowering, with a rich flavor that's not cloying even after a long time. I wouldn't mind letting you experience this delicious dish before you die."

John Wick's face twitched.

"The Continental Hotel."

Seeing that Anton wasn't lying and not daring to provoke his opponent by risking the dog's life, he softened his tone. "I'm from the Continental Hotel. There's no direct contact between assassins and their clients, so I don't know who wants you dead."

Anton pressed, "You don't know? Someone must know."

"The Continental Hotel is controlled by Winston. He's the boss who manages all the assassins. He assigns the contracts."

Since he was exposed, John Wick no longer concealed anything.

Besides, his identity wasn't a secret in New York; many gangsters knew him.

Finding the Continental Hotel based on his appearance wouldn't be difficult.

John Wick considered himself unlucky.

He wasn't afraid of death, but he desperately wanted to protect the life of the dog in front of him.

It was the dog his fiancée had given him! You could even say it was a token of their affection!

"Continental Hotel, John Wick…"

Anton immediately connected the person in front of him with the dog he was holding.

What in the world had been mixed into this world?

This guy didn't even look like Keanu Reeves.

While pondering, he wasn't sure how to deal with John Wick.

Do what you love.

If he wasn't Batman at this moment, he would have undoubtedly killed John Wick, not even sparing the dog.

However, he was currently wearing the Batman armor, so he needed to play the part properly.

The no-killing rule.

It's Batman's defining characteristic.

Stopping killing with killing versus using violence to control violence! The two are vastly different.

If Anton wanted to play Batman, he would naturally consider Bruce Wayne's original characteristics.

The no-killing rule is a principle passed down through the Batman lineage.

Someone once said that a Batman who kills is just the Joker.

Anton didn't agree, but he admitted there was some truth to the statement.

After all, with the skills Bruce Wayne had honed over many years, becoming the Joker would be incredibly easy.

Extreme duality, thought-provoking.

John Wick watched the armored man in front of him, pondering. He gradually suppressed the anger in his eyes, calmly awaiting his final fate.

Bang!

Suddenly, a hand knife struck.

He passed out again.

This time, when John Wick opened his eyes, he found himself unmoved, his hands and feet still bound.

His beloved dog was also the same, lying at his feet, snoring.

He felt a little relieved.

In front of him, the armored man was gone.

A young man and an old man were talking in front of him.

John Wick recognized at a glance that it was the genius director, his target.

"He's here to kill you?"

Jonah Jameson's face was grim. Years of experience, and the instincts honed by navigating the business world, allowed him to immediately pinpoint the mastermind.

"The Life Foundation!"

Jameson gritted his teeth, furious: "I underestimated them. Anton, you hide for a few days, I'll make them pay."

"No need."

Anton smiled. "I'll handle this. What you need to do is clean up after me."

"Clean up?"

Jonah Jameson was taken aback, sizing up Anton: "What can you do?"

"If I couldn't do anything, how do you think I caught this guy?" Anton countered. "John Wick, the King of Killers in New York, you think he's just some petty street thug?"

"John Wick?"

Jameson was stunned again.

He examined the disheveled man before him, his face bruised and swollen, not at all resembling the King of Killers of New York.

Then his gaze shifted downwards.

"The man doesn't look like much, but the dog is well-kept."

After a moment, he delivered his assessment.

"He's all yours. Do whatever you want with him."

Anton said, "Old man, after midnight, notify the NYPD to clean up the Wall Street Court in the Manhattan Financial District for me."

"The Continental Hotel?"

Jonah Jameson had extensive connections, especially in New York. He knew the area better than anyone.

Hearing the address, his pupils contracted. He turned abruptly, staring at Anton.

"You're going to cause trouble for the Continental Hotel?"

"As you can see, yes."

Anton met his gaze.

"Anton, the Continental Hotel was never the key. Behind it is the High Table. The High Table isn't our enemy, or anyone's enemy, really. They only respect the rules."

Jonah Jameson emphasized, "You need to understand, our enemy is the Life Foundation."

Even though there was no evidence to prove the Continental Hotel's mission originated from the Life Foundation, for Jameson, it was a foregone conclusion.

"You're right, the Continental Hotel isn't my enemy. But, since they took on a task they couldn't complete, they will pay the price."

Anton's words were pointed, "Besides, I'm not going to the Continental Hotel for the sake of the Continental Hotel."

Jameson frowned.

He vaguely understood Anton's meaning.

Of course, what he still couldn't figure out was where Anton's overwhelming confidence came from.

Anton opened his mouth, but in the end, said nothing.

Watching Anton leave the basement, he saw, through the wall-mounted monitors, Anton get into the car John Wick had brought. He sighed, thinking that the kid had really grown up.

Vroom! Vroom!

The 1969 Ford Mustang drove away from the villa.

Jonah Jameson looked away and turned to John Wick, mulling it over for a long while.

"The King of Killers in New York, John Wick, I've heard a lot about you."

Jonah Jameson stroked his chin.

He took an old-fashioned revolver out of his pocket and aimed it at John Wick's head.

The latter calmly looked at the gun barrel.

"I heard you're planning to retire. Interested in a career change?"

Suddenly, Jonah Jameson's eyes flashed. He lowered his gun and said, "If Anton can take care of the Continental Hotel, you stay and work for me. If he fails, I'll kill you."

This deal was unfair.

John Wick had no choice, but he could feel the strong confidence radiating from Jonah Jameson.

"Why?"

John Wick looked at Jameson, full of confusion. "If he only has that kind of ability, he can't deal with the Continental Hotel."

"He's my grandson."

Jonah Jameson admitted frankly, "My grandson has grown up. So I believe in him."
