Anton's taxi didn't stop.
He drove steadily, observing everything through the rearview mirror, and quickly left the area.
A few minutes later, he found a parking lot and stopped.
By now, night had fully fallen.
The neon lights of the Big Apple flickered on again.
Anton transformed into the black bat, slipping silently into the darkness between buildings. From the shadows, he moved quickly, arriving atop the roof of the house where Natasha and the others were located.
Using the sensors in his suit, he located Natasha and the others inside. With a flicker of motion, he perched silently on the windowsill, planning to eavesdrop on their conversation.
"I can't tell if Anton is a representative of Batman, or if he is Batman himself. But I think he's keeping his distance from us…"
Natasha's voice rang out: "At least his attitude reflects part of Batman's thinking."
Another voice chimed in.
"Whenever Batman appears, it's always with a strong purpose—Life Foundation, the Goblin incident, Lizard, the Foot Clan's downfall… in the past six months, he's already dismantled numerous factions!"
Anton recognized the speaker: Hawkeye.
"Sounds like a good thing," said Coulson.
"We share the same goal with Batman: protecting peace," he continued.
"But that doesn't mean he wants to cooperate with us," Hawkeye replied.
"We all know he doesn't take orders from anyone. To get him to join the team, either you have to let him lead, or find someone stronger who can command his respect."
"That's the problem," Coulson pondered.
He looked at Natasha: "Keep an eye on Anton. Whether or not he's Batman, we can use him as a bridge to reach him. Even if we can't convince him, we need to maintain contact."
Then he turned to Hawkeye: "Bart, your hostility toward Batman seems to exceed the situation itself."
"Maybe because he beat me up," Natasha teased.
"I won't let it cloud my judgment, though I do dislike him," Hawkeye replied calmly.
As a top agent, he controlled his emotions well, though compared to others, his control was weaker. When angered, he could act recklessly.
In the original timeline, after losing his wife and daughter to Thanos' snap, Hawkeye went on a murderous rampage in Japan. It showed he was competent professionally but far from as disciplined as Coulson or Black Widow.
"What about Obadiah?" Coulson asked, shifting topics.
"With Tony's abilities, if he investigates Obadiah, he won't be slower than us," he added.
Hawkeye replied, "We traced Obadiah secretly going to Afghanistan. He brought something back… probably related to Tony Stark. But we have no evidence to detain him."
"Take it slow," Coulson said. "We have enough time to deal with him this time."
"Artificial Sun experiment!"
Hawkeye added, "I can only confirm Obadiah's involvement isn't just for energy ventures. He has his own motives."
"Proceed as you see fit," Coulson said, trusting him.
His main job was overseeing New York—reaching out to Batman and monitoring Obadiah. Black Widow and Hawkeye were his top agents, Nick Fury's trusted aides. With the three of them, no mission was impossible.
On the windowsill, Anton heard their conversation and considered that they had correctly identified the targets. Whether himself or Obadiah, they were focusing on the right people. Their methods were sound, but outcomes often had a layer of uncertainty.
"Alright, that's it," Coulson said. He and Hawkeye prepared to leave.
Anton moved slightly.
Inside, the two said goodbye to Natasha and headed for the door.
Creak—
Just as they pushed it open, Hawkeye's pupils contracted. A dark figure stood in the doorway, grinning and casually waving at him.
"Long time no see, Hawkeye!"
"Batman!"
Hawkeye instinctively clenched his fists.
Coulson and Natasha were equally shocked.
They had anticipated Batman might show up—but not now. Just moments ago, they had been discussing him. Awkward timing!
"Shit!" Hawkeye muttered in frustration.
He guessed Batman had been listening to their conversation all along. Old grievances mixed with new, Hawkeye didn't hesitate—he charged forward with a punch.
"Bart!"
Coulson tried to stop him, but it was too late.
"Let them fight," Natasha said calmly. "Remember, to get Batman to cooperate, either he leads or someone can dominate him…"
"Do you think that person is here?" Coulson asked with a wry smile.
"Who knows!" Natasha shrugged. "Even if Bart gets beaten up again, it's no loss for us. Batman doesn't kill."
Classic agent logic.
Their teamwork was evident—Black Widow and Hawkeye's bond was strong.
Elsewhere, seeing Hawkeye charging, Anton remained calm, head slightly turned.
Whoosh!
An arrow shot past his ear, slicing through the darkness straight toward Hawkeye.
"What?"
Hawkeye dodged with a flip.
Thwack!
The arrow struck the ground, fletching quivering.
"Who's there?"
Hawkeye looked behind Batman.
A man in green armor, quiver on his back, bow in hand, stepped out of the shadows.
"If you want a fight…"
The man's voice was calm, his eyes unreadable, even more like an operative than Hawkeye.
"…your opponent is me!"
Natasha and Coulson exchanged a glance, surprised.
Who was this? Another green "Hawkeye" had appeared out of nowhere?
