The Medical Director walked his mother, Wu, all the way to the car. Since they had left the hospital, Wu had been talking nonstop, but he remained quiet, head bowed, following her without really hearing what she said. When Wu opened the back door, she looked at him and said, "Take care of yourself, Daddy."
He forced a smile. "Sure, Mom."
She nodded, then got into the car, watching him until he disappeared back into the hospital. She couldn't understand why his mood had dropped so sharply all of a sudden. A part of her feared her suspicions might be true. The thought unsettled her.
As the driver pulled away, she turned to Dr. Kexing seated in the car with her. "Where will you be spending the night?"
"At a hotel," he replied.
Wu shook her head. "No, go to your brother's house. And I don't want any arguments."
Dr. Kexing met her eyes through the rearview mirror. "Mom, you know his temperament. He doesn't like sharing his space with anyone. If I stay there, he'll just treat me coldly, and we'll end up having issues. And I don't want any problems with him."
"So you won't even do as I say?" Wu asked, her tone firm.
Dr. Kexing sighed. "All right. I'll go."
"When will you be back?" she asked.
His eyes stayed on the road. "Maybe tomorrow morning."
Wu lowered her voice. "Please, I don't want you rushing down to Guangzhou again, not until you're fully recovered. You know what you went through these past months, how you almost lost yourself. If not for his health, I would never have let you travel here, not even with me. I'll prevent anything that might put you and that boy together again if it risks your well-being. But illness overrides everything, and at the end of the day, we're all human."
Dr. Kexing gave her a faint, resigned smile. "Mom, between Zhan and me, there's nothing but family ties now. I gave up long ago....there's no hope for marriage between us. He's far beyond my reach. And with how things are going, I doubt they'd ever allow an outsider to marry him. Most likely, they'll arrange him with one of his brothers. So I've been teaching my heart to let go. If fate brings him back to me someday, I'd gladly marry him....but honestly, I don't think that's possible."
Wu exhaled slowly. "I'm glad you understand that. May life give you the best choice for your future. If he's meant to be yours, may it come easily. If not, may you find someone even better."
Dr. Kexing gave a small nod. "I hope so."
Meanwhile, back in the hospital, the MD sat in his office, head in his hands, weighed down by thoughts he had never imagined confronting. When the door opened, he jerked his head up. Dr. Jing entered, stepped closer, and studied him.
"Are you okay?" Dr. Jing asked.
The MD stood quickly. "Sure… Please, there's a patient in ward 5....check on him for me. I'm going to the CEO's office."
"All right," Dr. Jing said, then left.
The MD sank back onto the sofa, resting his chin in his palm. He stayed that way for more than fifteen minutes, lost in thought. Finally, drained, he got up, locked his office, and walked slowly to the CEO's office. He knocked gently three times, but when there was no answer, he turned away and left.

Later that evening, Dr. Kexing entered Zhan's ward carrying fruits he had bought. Only Lee and Lan Yi were inside. Lan Yi looked up.
"Thank you for your effort, Kexing," she said warmly.
Zhan, leaning quietly against Lan Yi, followed him with his eyes.
"You and Lee should go home later and have a proper meal," Lan Yi added.
Dr. Kexing moved to the window and gave her a small smile. "I'm fine, Aunty."
"No, please," she urged. "Go and eat at home."
He said nothing more. A few minutes later, he and Lee left together for the small fresh air. As soon as they're out, Dr. Kexing slipped out before Lee could even stand, avoiding the invitation to go to the family's house for dinner.
After dusk, the MD sat in his office, forehead resting on the desk, when his phone buzzed. He lifted it slowly and saw the CEO's name on the screen. He answered, and she asked him to come to her office.
"Yes, Ma'am," he said before ending the call.
He rose and walked there absentmindedly, his thoughts far away. At the door, he knocked gently and only entered when she called him in.
He stopped in front of her desk. She didn't look at him, though her glasses were still on. He noticed the redness and swelling around her eyes...she had clearly been crying.
Without meeting his gaze, she said quietly, "If Zhan's father comes, bring him to my office. I want to speak with him."
MD said, "Okay, Ma'am." Then he turned and left, wondering why she wanted to speak to him directly. Normally, she would only pass a message for him to relay, not ask for someone to be brought to her office. It was unusual...people rarely went there unless she had visitors.
He headed downstairs to Zhan's room. Inside, only Lan Yi and Hai Kuan were present. Zhan was quietly eating the fruit Dr. Kexing had bought for him, though his chest still ached.
Lan Yi looked up at MD and asked, "Has your mom arrived in Beijing, Doctor?"
MD replied, "No, they haven't landed yet."
Lan Yi nodded. "Alright, I hope they arrive safely."
He gave a faint smile. "Yes." Then he glanced at Zhan, who kept his eyes lowered as he ate.
Lan Yi said, "See? His condition is improving. At least today he's eating fruit on his own."
MD answered, "That's true. Did they come in to give him his injections?"
"Yes," Lan Yi replied. "The nurse came but, when she saw he was eating, she said she'd return later."
"Okay. Will Mr. Wang be coming tonight?" MD asked.
"He's on his way now," Lan Yi said.
"Alright. The CEO wants to see him," MD told her.
"Fine, I'll let him know once he arrives," Lan Yi replied. "He was just talking this morning about the hospital bill. We still haven't even deposited anything yet…"
MD gave the smallest of smiles, barely lifting his lips. Hai Kuan, however, didn't look in their direction, too absorbed with his phone. MD turned and left the ward.
Not long after, Qiren entered. Setting down the bag he carried, he looked at Zhan and asked, "How are you feeling?"
Zhan nodded softly. "Better."
"That's good. At least now you can even speak, unlike this morning," Qiren said with relief. Zhan managed a small smile. Then Qiren turned to Lan Yi and said, "Come with me. We need to talk."
Lan Yi stood and followed him into the corridor.
"Who invited that young man to this hospital?" Qiren asked sharply.
Lan Yi hesitated. "Which young man?"
"The one I saw sitting in the reception," Qiren pressed.
Realizing whom he meant, Lan Yi lowered her voice. "You mean Dr. Kexing? He only came to check on Zhan."
Qiren scowled. "And for what reason? Who even told him that Zhan wasn't well, for him to come here?"
Lan Yi felt her heart sink and couldn't answer right away.
"I asked you, who told him?" Qiren snapped.
Quietly, Lan Yi admitted, "It was Yibo who called him, to calm Zhan down. This morning, Zhan kept asking for him, saying he wanted to apologize. You know how a sick person can get anxious about anything…"
Qiren cut her off. "Do you hear yourself? Why would you make that decision without me? And Yibo of all people...doesn't he remember the disrespect and trouble we went through at the police station because of them?"
Lan Yi tried to explain. "But both sides said things… We're supposed to be decent people, not hold grudges. And it wasn't wrong for them to visit. His mother even came along and gave Zhan five thousand yuan. Doesn't that mean something? Remember, you were the one who first had the police involved against him. If they can put that aside and travel all the way from Beijing to Guangzhou just to visit, why can't we put things aside too?"
Qiren's voice rose. "So that's how you see it? Let me make it clear...if this stirs up anything again, I will hold you responsible. And Yibo too, for having no sense. Even if Zhan asked for him, that doesn't mean he had to call him. At least Hai Kuan would never have done that! We've been trying to help Zhan forget him completely, and yet you keep inviting the boy back into his life. Don't you see? That boy's family is at the root of everything happening to Zhan."
Lan Yi answered carefully, "But what about MD? He's been standing by Zhan day and night, yet he's Dr. Kexing's elder brother....same mother, same father. What should we do then?"
Qiren froze, staring at her in disbelief. After a long pause, he asked, "Dr. Kexing's brother? How?"
"We were just as surprised as you," Lan Yi explained. "But yes, they're full siblings. And you yourself admitted how kind MD has been, despite his position. Look at how he treats us here in the hospital. In fact, he just left before you came in. He said the CEO wants to see you—it's probably about the bill."
Qiren sighed heavily and said nothing more. Lan Yi turned back into the ward, while Qiren walked toward Dr. Jing's office.
Dr. Jing was preparing to go home, since he didn't have the night shift, when he saw Qiren. He greeted him respectfully.
After Qiren responded, he said, "Please, Doctor, could you ask MD to see me? I hear he's looking for me."
"Alright," Dr. Jing said. He went straight to MD's office, where he found him sitting in his chair with a cup of coffee, head leaning back, eyes closed. When the door opened, MD slowly opened his eyes.
Dr. Jing walked up and said, "Are you alright? You don't look well. If this is about Zhan, I think he's already improving...he's even talking now."
MD frowned. "I don't understand."
Dr. Jing chuckled. "I was waiting for him to get better so I could finally ask you all the questions stuck in my mind. They've been bothering me for a while…"
MD asked, "What question?"
Dr. Jing smiled. "Although there's still time, maybe now isn't the right moment to ask you."
MD didn't even glance at him. He simply shifted his coffee cup aside.
Dr. Jing said, "His father came to my office saying you wanted to see him."
MD replied, "Yes, but let me first inform the CEO. She's the one who wants him."
With that, he stood and walked out slowly. Dr. Jing followed him with his eyes.
Qiren was sitting in Dr. Jing's office when MD entered. After greeting him respectfully, MD said, "You'll find her in her office, Sir."
Qiren stood. "Alright then."
MD led him to the CEO's office. After knocking, he opened the door for him. Qiren went inside, and MD closed the door behind him before leaving.
Qiren sat down, greeting her politely. She answered quietly, without meeting his gaze, adjusting the papers on her desk.
"How's his condition now?" Qiren asked. "This morning, I planned to ask about the bill, but something urgent took me to Beijing. I was told you wanted to see me as soon as I returned."
The CEO nodded. She still didn't look at him directly, speaking in a calm, even tone. "I need the birth certificate of your son, Zhan. Also, the city where he was born."
Qiren fell silent, watching her. She avoided his eyes, shuffling papers.
He finally said, "Honestly, I'd have to ask my wife. I can't recall if we ever had one made."
"Fine," the CEO replied. "But please ask her and come back. I'll wait."
"Of course, right away," Qiren said, standing.
He was about to leave when she added softly, "Even if there's no certificate, I'll need the city where he was born, the date, and the exact time."
He turned back, staring at her for a few seconds, then answered quickly, "I'll ask her." Then he left, locking the door behind him.
Qiren was unsettled, standing outside the office for nearly half a minute. Why does she need Zhan's birth certificate? he thought. That's usually unnecessary. Maybe she only wants to attach it to his file? But in all my years, I've never heard of a hospital demanding a birth certificate. Unless it's something I just don't know…
Still confused, he walked back to Zhan's ward.
Inside, Lan Yi was coaxing Zhan to eat the food Aunty Marquis had prepared.
"She's asking for his birth certificate," Qiren announced as he sat down.
Lan Yi turned sharply toward him. "His birth certificate? What for?"
"I can't figure it out either," Qiren admitted. "Do hospitals normally ask for that when admitting a patient? I thought they only asked for the person's age."
Zhan just watched them quietly.
Lan Yi set down the plate in her hand, saying nothing more.
Qiren studied her. "Why do you look so troubled all of a sudden? Is something wrong?"
Softly, Lan Yi replied, "I've never heard of such a thing. Why would she want his birth certificate? Shouldn't she just give us the total bill so we can pay and be discharged? His condition is already improving. They should let us go home."
Before Qiren could answer, Hai Kuan entered.
Lan Yi quickly asked him, "Hai Kuan, have you ever heard of a hospital asking for a patient's birth certificate? Don't they only need age or date of birth? Why ask for the actual certificate?"
Hai Kuan frowned. "Birth certificate? What would they do with it?"
"That's what she asked for," Qiren said. "She even said that if there's no certificate, she needs the city of birth, the date, and the time. But let's wait for Yibo to come. Maybe he'll know if that's standard practice."
Lan Yi shook her head. "No, just tell her he doesn't have a certificate. He was born at home in Beijing, not in a hospital."
Qiren didn't reply.
By 8 o'clock, he and Hai Kuan left. Lan Yi remained seated, unable to move since hearing the request for the certificate. Slowly, she turned to Zhan.
In a low, tender voice, she asked, "Where does it hurt now, baby?"
Zhan gave a faint smile. "Nowhere. I just feel weak."
"You're tired of being in the hospital, aren't you?" she asked gently.
Zhan nodded. "I'm tired, Mama."
Lan Yi opened her handbag, pulled out a thousand yuan, then set it back down. Standing, she said firmly, "Let's just go home. I know they won't discharge us willingly....they'll keep saying we have to stay a few more days."
She took Zhan's hand, helping him down from the bed. His drip had already been removed earlier, and they hadn't attached another. She placed his shoes before him, and he put them on.
When Zhan stood, a wave of dizziness struck him. Lan Yi didn't let it deter her...she held him tightly as they walked out of the ward.
At the reception, she avoided meeting any nurse's eyes, heading straight for the exit.
One of the nurses stood up. "Ma'am… where are you going?"
Lan Yi turned quickly, forcing a smile. "Oh, we're just walking around the hospital grounds to give him some exercise."
The nurse nodded and sat back down. "Alright, Ma'am."
Lan Yi continued, holding Zhan close as they walked straight to the gate. He could barely keep his strength, leaning on her heavily. Out on the roadside, she flagged down a taxi. They got in, and she told the driver their destination.
*******
Aunty Marquis, who was seated in the sitting room, stood up in shock when she saw Lan Yi walk in holding Zhan in her arms. She hurried over and asked, surprised, "Have you both been discharged, Lan Yi Jie?"
Lan Yi didn't respond. Instead, Aunty Marquis quickly supported her in holding Zhan, who could barely stand, and together they went upstairs into Lan Yi's bedroom. Lan Yi gently laid him on the bed, pulled the duvet over him, and looked at him softly, whispering, "Rest well."
Zhan couldn't reply. Ever since they left the hospital, his chest pain had worsened, and now a throbbing headache had joined in. He shut his eyes, unable to even acknowledge Aunty Marquis, who was standing by his side offering quiet words of comfort as she watched his labored breathing.
Lan Yi rose and walked out of the room. Aunty Marquis followed and found her sitting in the sitting room, her head resting on her hand.
"Wait, were you really discharged?" Aunty Marquis asked in alarm. "Zhan's body is burning hot. He's breathing like he can barely manage it."
Lan Yi looked at her sharply. "And how could I not bring him home, Marquis? I don't understand what that woman is after…" Her voice broke off, and tears spilled.
Confused, Aunty Marquis sat beside her. "What woman? I don't understand, Lan Yi Jie. What's going on?"
Her voice trembling, Lan Yi explained, "From the very start, ever since he was hired, I never trusted that hospital's CEO. Even when she arranged for him to be in the UK, something in me felt uneasy. And now, out of nowhere, she calls Qiren, asking for Zhan's birth certificate. Tell me, Marquis...why? Since when do hospitals demand birth certificates? Why now, when it wasn't needed all along?"
Aunty Marquis frowned, clearly worried. "Lan Yi Jie, this is not a good idea. You brought him home without their approval even though he was in such a fragile state. What if his condition worsens again? And honestly, what's so alarming about them asking for a birth certificate? That's not a reason to drag him out of the hospital. My real fear is that his illness might relapse, and then we'll be in real trouble."
Lan Yi shook her head as tears streamed down. "No. I can't trust that CEO. I don't know what her intentions are toward my son. For all I know, she could be involved in something dangerous. I swear, I can't shake this fear."
Aunty Marquis fell silent, staring at her sister with concern while Lan Yi continued crying.
Just then, the door opened. Qiren entered with Hai Kuan following behind. Qiren's expression hardened as he looked at Lan Yi, who sat with a stern face. Then he turned to Aunty Marquis. "Where's Zhan?"
"In the bedroom," Aunty Marquis answered quietly.
Qiren walked straight in. Hai Kuan came closer to Lan Yi, crouched down, and asked softly, "Mama, why did you bring him home in this condition?"
Lan Yi broke down, sobbing. "Hai Kuan, I don't trust that CEO. For all I know, she's nothing but a parasite!"
Hai Kuan was at a loss for words. Inside the bedroom, Qiren found Zhan burning with fever, struggling for breath. Anger surged through him as he stormed back into the sitting room.
"Do you see the result of your sister's recklessness?" he snapped at Aunty Marquis. "The boy was barely recovering, and because of her thoughtlessness, she drags him home in this state? What sane person does such a thing?"
Aunty Marquis quickly rose, trying to calm him. Lan Yi sat silently, tears running down her face.
Qiren, furious, declared, "I'll take him back to the hospital. And let me be clear...Lan Yi, I don't want to see you there again. Marquis, you will stay with him and continue his care."
Lan Yi stood abruptly, her voice breaking. "You will not take him back to that woman's hospital. There are other hospitals in Guangzhou, even better ones. Why can't we move him to one of those?"
Qiren ignored her completely and went back into the bedroom. Aunty Marquis hurried after him.
Hai Kuan gently held Lan Yi's hand and led her to another sitting room. Lowering his voice, he said, "Mama, you shouldn't have brought him out. He hasn't fully recovered yet, and you know this."
Lan Yi, still crying, snapped, "Why won't any of you understand me, Hai Kuan?"
Hai Kuan let out a quiet sigh. "I do understand you, Mama. But listen—her asking for his birth certificate isn't strange. It's their hospital policy. They make photocopies to add to the patient's file. Every hospital has its own rules. You jumped to conclusions without really asking why she needed it."
Lan Yi's sobbing didn't stop, and Hai Kuan kept trying to comfort her, his voice calm and steady.
Aunty Marquis was holding Zhan as they came downstairs, with Qiren following closely behind them. A chill spread through her whole body...she couldn't believe how quickly Qiren had returned from the silent man to a temper person. From what she knew of him, he would normally never argue with Lan Yi; at most, he would quietly take Zhan back to the hospital. But this time was different. He wasn't making excuses for her at all anymore.
Zhan clung weakly to Aunty Marquis until they arrived at the hospital in Qiren's car. By then, his condition had worsened—his breathing was shallow and strained. He was rushed straight into the Emergency Ward.
Meanwhile, no matter how much Lan Yi wanted to return to the hospital after they left with Aunty Marquis, Hai Kuan wouldn't allow it. Seeing how furious Qiren had been, he spoke gently, trying to calm her.
"Mama, please wait until morning. Since Aunty Marquis went with him, you know she'll take good care of Zhan. Just rest tonight. Tomorrow morning, we'll both go together. Please be patient."
He kept reassuring her until she reluctantly gave up the idea of going back that night, though deep down, her heart was restless. Granny Fang Yu and Granny Ai were in the visitors' room; they had no idea what was happening at the house.

By a quarter to twelve, Zhan's oxygen mask was finally removed after his breathing steadied. MD and Dr. Han remained by his side in the Emergency Ward, monitoring him closely. MD leaned down when he saw Zhan trying to speak, watching him carefully but saying nothing.
With effort, Zhan whispered, "I want some water, please."
MD stayed silent, his eyes fixed on him. Zhan turned his gaze toward Dr. Han, hoping he might help instead. Seeing his lips move, Dr. Han came closer and bent down. "What is it?" he asked softly.
In a faint voice, Zhan said, "Doctor… I'm thirsty. I want water."
Calmly, Dr. Han replied, "You'll drink a little later. Be patient."
Zhan pouted weakly. "I'm very thirsty."
"I know," Dr. Han said gently. "You'll have some soon." With that, he turned and left the ward.
Outside, Qiren had been waiting near the Emergency entrance. He immediately stood as Dr. Han came out.
"His breathing has stabilized," Dr. Han reported. "By one o'clock, he'll be moved back to the ward."
Relieved, Qiren exhaled. "Good." Then Dr. Han left.
Inside, Zhan's eyes welled up. He looked at MD desperately. "Please, just let me drink a little."
At first, MD said nothing. Finally, he answered, "I'll let you later."
Tears spilled down Zhan's face. "Then… then call my Gege. I know he'll give it to me."
MD stared at him. "Which Gege?" he asked slowly.
"Yibo," Zhan whispered.
"Oh…" MD muttered. Then he turned and left the ward. Some time later, he returned carrying a small disposable cup of water from the dispenser at reception. When Zhan saw it, he tried to sit up, but his body was too weak. MD helped him sit carefully on the bed, then held the cup to his lips, letting him sip just a little.
"That's too little," Zhan murmured.
MD gave him another tiny sip, just as Dr. Balogun entered. He froze at the sight of MD holding the water. Quickly, MD set the cup down and slipped out of the room. Dr. Balogun immediately disposed of both the cup and the leftover water.
Meanwhile, Aunty Marquis sat in the reception area, her head in her hands. Something made her look up suddenly...and there was Lan Yi, as if she had been thrown into the room. Surprised, Aunty Marquis jumped up and hurried toward her. "Lan Yi Jie? Why did you come at this hour?"
Lan Yi's swollen, tear-stained eyes betrayed her sleeplessness. Her voice trembled. "I couldn't rest, Marquis."
Aunty Marquis didn't know what to say. Inwardly, she prayed Qiren wouldn't come out and start scolding her again. Taking Lan Yi's hand, she guided her to a seat. "Have you gone in to check on Yibo?" she asked quietly.
Lan Yi wiped her eyes. "What? What's wrong with him?"
"He's at home," Aunty Marquis explained. "In his room. He hasn't been feeling well."
Lan Yi blinked, startled. "I didn't know."
"When you and Qiren came back earlier, he was asleep," Aunty Marquis told her. "That's why I was sitting in the sitting room waiting...then suddenly, you both arrived."
Lan Yi stayed quiet, saying nothing.
When MD returned to his office, he found Dr. Kexing sitting there, flipping through a book to distract himself from worrying about Zhan's condition. Ever since Zhan had been rushed into Emergency, Dr. Kexing had stayed there, waiting in MD's office. One glance at MD and he quickly dropped his eyes back to the book.
MD placed his stethoscope down, sat on the sofa, and in a low voice said, "Now tell me… are you still interested in marrying him?"
Dr. Kexing raised his head, surprised, then slowly set his book aside. "Who?"
"The boy," MD replied quietly, leaning back in his chair.
Dr. Kexing looked down, his voice calm. "Why are you asking?"
"I will make sure..." MD began, but stopped abruptly as his phone buzzed. Seeing the CEO's name on the screen, he picked it up. She never stayed overnight at the hospital, not once in all the time he'd known her, yet tonight she was still there past midnight. After listening carefully to her words, he said softly, "Yes, Ma'am." Then he rose and left, with Dr. Kexing watching silently as he walked out.
When MD entered the CEO's office, he found her curled on a three-seater sofa, wrapped in a small duvet as if she were cold, waiting for him. From the moment he stepped in, he noticed her appearance...fragile, almost sickly. With polite concern, he asked, "Are you really okay, Ma'am? Is something wrong?"
She gestured for him to sit without looking at him. He obeyed, quietly taking a seat, his eyes never leaving her. After a few seconds, she lowered her gaze and spoke softly. "I want to ask you something, Shen Yi."
"I'm listening, Ma'am," he said.
Calmly, she asked, "What do you know about Zhan?"
His eyes dropped to the floor. He wasn't sure whether to be surprised by her question or not. For a long time, he'd wondered why she treated Zhan differently...sending him to the UK, then bringing him into her home, when she never trusted anyone that deeply. In fact, among all her hospital staff, he was the only one who knew the locations of her homes in the UK, Guangzhou, and Shanghai. After a pause, he finally lifted his head.
"Ma'am, I don't know him personally. I never met him until here at the hospital. But today, I was shocked. My mother and younger brother came all the way from Beijing to see him, and I learned… he was once engaged to my younger brother. The same broken engagement I mentioned to you a few days ago."
The CEO's eyes remained fixed on him. Then she asked, "Your brother?"
"Yes," he admitted quietly. "I only found out today myself."
She drew the duvet tighter around her shoulders. "And… may I know why the engagement was broken?"
MD hesitated. He felt torn. Revealing Zhan's truth didn't seem right...this was supposed to remain private. Even Dr. Jing, from what he could tell, didn't know Zhan's background. And it wasn't his place to tell her that Zhan had no known origin.
Sensing his silence, the CEO reached out and touched his shoulder lightly. "Are you hiding something from me, Shen Yi? Speak freely, don't hold back. I already know he identifies as non-binary since the trip to the UK. That's why I've always had doubts about him. It's also the reason I asked for the genetic test."
MD let out a quiet, hidden sigh. He realized that even if he told her who Zhan was, her feelings wouldn't lessen; if anything, they would only deepen. After considering his words carefully, he finally said in a low voice, "My uncles discovered he only had foster parents…"
The CEO's gaze softened as tears welled in her eyes. She lowered her head, reaching for the tissues on her desk to wipe them away, but they wouldn't stop.
"Are you alright, Ma'am?" MD asked gently.
Struggling with her tears, her voice breaking, she said, "Do you know something, Shen Yi?"
He shook his head slowly.
With trembling voice, she whispered, "I want us to go to my house right now. I need to show you something… because I believe Zhan might be my long-lost…" Her voice faltered, and she broke off, wiping her tears again.
"Alright, Ma'am," he said softly.
She stood and walked toward her bedroom, leaving him staring after her, confused by her sudden emotions. Soon she emerged, dressed and ready. Without taking her phone or bag, she headed straight for the door. MD followed silently as they left the office together.
