"REN!"
I practically screamed, my eyes sparkling like a kid spotting ice cream after a week-long diet. My heart instantly started breakdancing in my chest.
Ren's stoic face didn't shift much—classic Ren—but his eyes flickered in surprise. He offered his hand, and I grabbed it like it was the last life preserver on the Titanic.
I even made a show of dusting imaginary glitter off myself. "Do you live here?"
Ren's lips twitched, almost—almost—into a smile, but his face quickly reset to its usual poker mask. He gave a slow nod.
Fate really was the biggest drama queen! I grinned ear to ear. "Who would have known we'd end up as neighbors?"
Ren blinked, then glanced toward the far end of the hallway, his expression sharpening.
"Wait . . . how did you recognize me? I thought for sure you wouldn't—"
Before I could answer, the sound of footsteps echoed down the hall. Heavy. Quick. Approaching.
