At home, Erik stared blankly at his phone. He had heard Charles clearly, but the man hadn't even given him a chance to ask what was going on. That wasn't like Charles at all.
But since his friend sounded unusually anxious, Erik sighed, got up, and decided to wash up before heading to the school.
Meanwhile, on the other side, Charles hung up the call. Han Yu asked, "You two have known each other for a long time?"
"Yeah. We went to the same school from high school all the way through college. And now, we've been assigned to the same school again. Funny coincidence, huh?" Charles replied with a smile.
Han Yu rubbed his forehead helplessly. Well, at least things hadn't been altered for the worse. Not every change in the timeline necessarily led to disaster.
As they waited, the two of them—now openly aware of each other's mutant identities—chatted even more freely. The conversation flowed from one mutant topic to another, as if they could talk forever, with Han Yu continuing to study Charles's powers in fascination.
"Oh, right. What about your ability? Can I see it?" Charles asked curiously.
That question stumped Han Yu. Truthfully, he didn't really have a distinctive "superpower" of his own. If you counted the Green Lantern Ring, that was more of a tool-based ability. Besides that, the only innate ability he had was the Mark of Immortality.
But the Mark didn't offer much in the way of offensive power—it mainly enhanced his mental strength, allowing him to communicate telepathically, intimidate, and shield his mind. The mental shock it provided could harm ordinary people, but against mutants or gods with powerful psychic abilities, it was only good for defense, not attack.
"My ability's a bit different from yours," Han Yu said casually. "You could call it… a mix of spatial and weapon-type powers, I guess."
He tossed out two random terms and, with a flick of his wrist, a black-glowing Haotian Hammer and Hyōrinmaru materialized in his hands.
The moment Hyōrinmaru appeared, the temperature in the room dropped sharply. In the middle of summer, a thin layer of frost began to form on the walls.
Charles instinctively wanted to blow warm air into his palms, but he quickly noticed that his movements had slowed down—as if some invisible pressure was weighing on him. His eyes went straight to the hammer.
Even without psychic senses, he could feel the faint, terrifying pressure radiating from it. That pressure alone was what made his body feel so heavy.
Seeing this, Han Yu immediately put away the weapons. Even though Charles was a mutant, his physique was still essentially human; he couldn't withstand the oppressive force those two weapons emitted.
Once the weapons disappeared, Charles exhaled a long breath of relief.
"Sorry about that," Han Yu said with an apologetic smile.
"It's fine. I asked to see it myself. Still, that was amazing—just a sword and a hammer, and you could change the entire atmosphere of a room. Who could possibly fight against you?" Charles said, glancing around in awe at the frosted walls.
Han Yu only smiled in response. Sooner or later, Charles would see his real power for himself—there was no need to explain now.
About twenty minutes later, a figure burst hurriedly into the room. His gaze immediately locked onto Charles, then darted to the slightly bent spoon on the table. His expression changed, and he rushed over, grabbing Charles by the arm and pulling him behind him.
"You okay? Did he hurt you?"
The newcomer was none other than the "former" Magneto—Erik Lehnsherr. Right now, he was checking Charles over from head to toe, as if afraid his friend might have been harmed by Han Yu.
"I'm fine. Why would anything happen to me?" Charles asked in confusion.
Erik cast Han Yu a wary glance, then looked again at the bent spoon on the table. In a low, tense voice, he asked Charles, "Did you use your power just now? Didn't we agree you wouldn't use it when there are outsiders around? What if it draws trouble?"
His tone carried a hint of anger—but it was the kind of anger born of worry, the fear that Charles might expose himself and end up in danger.
The scene made Han Yu chuckle inwardly. The brotherly bond between these two was stronger than he'd expected. It seemed that, in this world, Erik hadn't suffered persecution under the Nazis—otherwise, he wouldn't be working alongside Charles now.
Hearing the concern hidden beneath Erik's scolding, Charles stepped between them and said, "Let me introduce you. This is Han Yu, from New York. He's also a mutant."
"Also a mutant?" Erik looked Han Yu up and down skeptically. Clearly, he didn't believe it.
Han Yu shrugged and didn't bother arguing. Instead, he pulled out the Haotian Hammer and Hyōrinmaru again, letting Erik see them for himself before putting them away. That was enough proof.
"You two mutants talking shop—what do you need me for? Don't tell me you plan to use me for target practice. I may be a P.E. teacher, but I'm not anyone's punching bag," Erik said, backing up a few steps.
Han Yu couldn't help but laugh. What happened to the cold, imposing Magneto from his previous life?
"No," Charles said quickly, "Han just told me he thinks you might be a mutant too!"
"Me? That's impossible," Erik replied. "I've never shown any signs of mutation in my life. Didn't we already test that years ago?"
"Well… that's true," Charles admitted.
At that, Charles looked toward Han Yu, silently asking what they should do next.
Back then, when Charles's powers first manifested, Erik had tried everything to see if he had any powers of his own—jumping into cold water, leaping from the third floor, even slapping himself hard across the face. None of it worked.
Charles hadn't been branded a freak, but Erik had been. Those strange experiments made people see him as the odd one instead.
Han Yu opened the X-System app on his phone and said, "This software can detect mutants. Right now, it's set to direct-detection mode—if the target is a mutant, it glows red; if it's white, it means no. Let's go outside and test it."
The three of them stepped out into the hallway. It was after class, so the café area was crowded with students. Han Yu tested them one by one—all white. Finally, when he pointed it at Charles, the screen lit up red.
"See? It works," Han Yu said.
He tested it several more times between Charles and a random student to confirm it was accurate, then the three went back to the room.
"Alright," Han Yu said seriously. "Here's the deal. Charles and I plan to establish a school—a place dedicated to teaching young mutants. If the test shows that you're a mutant, I hope you'll help him run it. Of course, if you don't want to, we won't test you. Without activating your power, it's unlikely to manifest at your age."
His tone was solemn. After all, walking this path meant no longer living an ordinary life. It would change everything.
This time, Charles didn't say anything to persuade Erik. Having awakened his own powers, he knew that mutants and ordinary people lived in completely different worlds. What lay ahead could be dangerous. If Erik wanted to help, that would be wonderful—but if not, Charles wouldn't force him. It was Erik's life to decide.
Han Yu and Charles both waited quietly for his answer.
Erik didn't reply right away. He thought for a moment, then placed a hand on Charles's head and smiled.
"Of course I'm in. If I'm not around, how's this bookworm supposed to survive out there?"
