Chapter 40 - The Edge of Control

Ethan's POV

I didn't expect to see Lila in my doorway now, but here she was staring at me with her piercing blue eyes.

"Lila," I breathed.

She didn't say anything at first. Just stood there, her presence filling the doorway, her scent hitting me like a punch to the gut. It was warm, familiar, maddeningly sweet — and it pulled something dangerous out of me.

"You look worried," she said softly, stepping inside without waiting for an invitation. "Is it because of her?"

My jaw tightened. "You don't need to worry about that."

Her brow arched, unconvinced. "That's not what I asked."

"It's nothing I can't handle," I said, my voice sharper than I meant.

Lila didn't flinch. She crossed her arms, tilting her head slightly as she studied me like I was a puzzle she'd already solved. "You're angry at yourself."

Her words landed like a blow. I looked away, swallowing hard. "Doesn't matter. I'll fix it."
